Update - 12

Posted: 19 Feb 2012 12:44 AM PST
When people think of computer games, what they usually think of are the popular first-person shooters like Call of Duty  or others of its ilk. Action games are the big sellers in the market, mostly because of their simple, straightforward controls and easy-to-understand backstories. The Android OS may not exactly be the ideal gaming platform, but it does have its share of these games. Here’s a look at ten of the best action games available for Android devices, sure to get players’ hearts pounding and adrenaline pulsing

1) Grand Theft Auto III

The game that brought open-world gaming into the mainstream and launched Rockstar Games into the stratosphere, Grand Theft Auto III on Android is a treat. The 10th Anniversary edition delivers all the punch of the original, while updating it all for modern sensibilities. None of that low-polygon count stuff going on here – updated graphics, both of character and vehicle models have been included. It even has HD quality resolution. Combine that with a great storyline and open-ended interaction with the denizens of Liberty City and the result is game that will tempt you to punch out people on the street and jack their cars whenever you’re late for a meeting.

2) Age of Zombies

Zombies are the monster du jour. Name any gaming platform and it’s sure to have a zombie game or two. However, most of these are depressing survival fests that go for the horror side of the genre. Well, Age of Zombies is definitely not one of those games. Playing as Barry Steakfries, players step into a time-travelling commando’s shoes and kill zombies all across the space-time continuum in a laugh-out-loud storyline. Shooting zombies has never been so fun – shooting zombie dinosaurs being a hundred times fun than normal. Main downsides for this game are that it’s short and has trouble running on the Samsung Galaxy. Halfbrick has definitely delivered the goods with this follow-up to Monster Dash and Fruit Ninja.

3) Sleepy Jack

The first impression that Sleepy Jack delivers is that the graphics are awesome. A tube shooter, the game propels its players into a tube and gives them a demented roller-coaster ride either aiming to shoot at things or to fulfill the level’s objectives. As explorers of Jack’s psychedelic 3D dreamscape, it can bea bit overwhelming at first. But the simple controls and frenetic gameplay help a lot in delivering a dreamlike experience. Forty levels and additional updates also prevent Sleepy Jack from getting really old – maintaining its replay value.

4) Grabatron

Alien invaders have been a setpiece enemy of video games for years now. How about switching that formula around? In Grabatron, players are in control of an UFO as it abducts things, people, and animals all over the landscape. Armed not with death rays but a single retractable claw, this will constitute quite a challenge. The claw can be used to pick up objects and toss them around as improvised weapons – weapons that will be needed because those dastardly humans will be out there with their guns and tanks. Packed with over 30 missions of alien-abducting fun, Grabatron is a definite treat for any gamer.

5) Windup Knight

Running games are a pretty new genre. Essentially, players control a continually running character hoping to avoid their doom. There’s no going back, just going forward. Robot Invader’s Windup Knight is currently the pinnacle of running games. Ordinarily players only have a single button to think about in running games, but with jump, slash, roll, and other moves, this game takes the running game to the next level. Add to that fifty levels of challenging gameplay and challenges, this game is definitely something to waste your time on.

6) INC

Platformers have been part of video games for a long time now, ever since the seminal Super Mario Bros. The simple gameplay mechanics are easy to understand and give a large variation. Currently one of the best platformers on the Android OS is INC. Developed by Orange Pixel, the game has an awesome retro-feel; pixel style graphics, authentic sound and challenging levels make this game a work of art. Very easy to get into, INC is an addictive pleasure for any fan of the genre.

7) Meteor Blitz

Meteor Blitz is definitely one of the must-have games on the platform. Why is it this update to the venerable Asteroids a needed addition to any gamer’s collection? Mostly because this game delivers the complete package: smooth visuals, challenging gameplay, responsive controls and online play. The game’s replay value definitely also adds to these attributes – along with the very cheap price. The game is intense and players will find themselves sweating as the meteors keep coming. For pulse-pounding entertainment, that’s pretty hard to beat.

8) Sonic CD

Sega’s posterboy, Sonic the Hedgehog may have lost a lot of his star power since his heyday in the ’90s, but don’t count him out yet. The fastest hedgehog ever has come to Android and he brings with him the solid gameplay of his earlier outings. Sonic CD was one of the best of blue-furred hero’s adventures and now player’s can relive the experience. Updated for the Android, it still has that early ’90s patina to its graphics but the fun shines through. Definitely a keeper for any fan of Sonic.

9) Minecraft

First off, we perceived that the P880 will have dual-core processor. However, leaked details  about the device show that it will be equipped with a quad-core processor; the latest craze the MWC is all about.
Apparently, the P880 will be among the first smartphones to ship with NVIDIA Tegra 3 System on Chip quad-core processor. Even though this SoC has already been on a number of tablets, seeing it on a smartphone is still a momentous sight. Moreover, the P880 will also be equipped with an HD screen, 3000mAh battery, and a 1280×720 screen resolution.
Of course, if the LG P880 has the latest processor, it should also run on the latest Android OS. Leaked screens of the device reveal that the P880 is the very first LG phone to run on Ice Cream Sandwich. In fact, it shows that the device runs on version 4.0.3. Pretty cool huh?

According to a post on the official SwiftKey blog, the app developers have very recently added a new language information feature; which they have named as 'conversation models.' As stated on their blog, this feature is an attempt to give support to SwiftKey app users by making predictions on words normally used in short messages and don't need a full vocabulary. As a result of this feature, SwiftKey X gives suggestions on words which users might use commonly in both SMS and IM conversations.
Apart from the language update, SwiftKey X is feeling joyful as it celebrates its one millionth personalization. Users who have been with the app for a long time already can simply link the app to their Twitter, Facebook, and Gmail accounts so that SwiftKey gets to learn your previous conversations and help give you an even more 'predictable' experience.
As part of its celebration, you can download SwiftKey X this weekend for 25% its usual price. If you already have the SwiftKey app, be sure to update it first before you update the languages in-app feature so you can get this helpful tool!

Admittedly, there are a lot of people who are unfamiliar Archos' Arnova tablet lineage. But even though, we believe we are putting things at a fair game here, especially since this line comes cheaper than the price of the (already) cheap main series of Android tablets. So when the company announced the latest member of its Arnova family, we did not stop to re-consider if it would be a good topic to talk about; as we're sure someone somewhere is looking for a starter tablet that won't cost him an arm and leg.
The latest entry to this lineage is the Arnova 8b G2, which is only a slight update to the previous Arnova 8 G2. The specs of the new tablet include 800×600 LCD screen, 512MB RAM, front-facing camera, microphone and other typical features such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity and support for MicroSD card. The tablet currently runs on Gingerbread and is powered by 1GHz CPU. It also comes in either 4GB or 8GB storage space availability. Seeing as to how low the specs of the device is, seeing an Android 4.0 update may not happen anytime soon.
With regard to its release price and date, it should be around $180 and will most likely be distributed first in France and other parts of Europe. A specific release date has not been mentioned, unfortunately.

The Android Market is now being graced by the presence of an exciting app called the Air Display app. Exclusively for Android tablets, the app enables each user to get access to a wireless visual display of their Windows or Mac OS X system. This is why many consider it as an extension or even a mirror display of their computers at home or office.
Apart from wirelessly accessing the display, users can also navigate the screen with the use of a mouse or a touchscreen. As soon as the app has been set up with an Android device, the desktop screen expands itself onto the tablet. Automatically, the main display returns to its single-screen mode when the app has been closed. Pretty nifty, especially to those who need to gain quick access to their files on their computer.
The app has been created by Avatron, who have gained popularity for the same Air Display app for iPad users. On the Amazon Appstore, the Air Display app for Android tablets can be downloaded for only $10.

If you're the owner of any Acer Iconia Tab, you'll be pleased to know that the company has finally started rolling out its update to the latest Android OS. However, updates will be completed by the end of April so you have to check if the update is already available to your specific tablet model.
According to Acer, the new OS is equipped with improvements that will make each tablet easier to use and navigate. In addition, these tablets will have an improved user interface as well as an easier time in managing applications and folders. Acer has also improved the Web browser and also the multitasking features of the tablet. Moreover, the update comes with Acer Ring; an app that lets users have an easier time accessing key apps on their tablet, take and post pictures, and even write new status updates on any of their social networks.
The first Iconia Tab model to get the update will be the 10-inch A200 models; which will be completed by next week. On the other hand, 7-inch Iconia Tab A100 and 10-inch Iconia Tab A500 models will get the update by the end of April. This is both for tablets based in the United States.
When asked when the update will be delivered in other parts of the world, Acer has failed to comment. So Iconia Tab units from other parts of the world will have to make do with the Android 3.0 OS until Acer finally releases the update for Android 4.0.

At the end of this month will be Mobile World Congress, the largest mobile technology dedicated trade show in the world. It will take place between February 27th and 1st of March in Barcelona. Year by year, this event has provided us with product launches and news from the growing world of mobile technology. Among the innumerable lot of rumors and official announcements, we have picked the most anticipated debuts for this big event. For better organization, we’ve put them into different categories. Read on!

    Smartphones:

    HTC
The HTC Ville, set to be named the HTC One S, is the thinnest phone set to come from HTC. Rumors suggest that the new gadget from the Taiwanese company will be no more than 8 mm thin, whereas their thinnest phones currently measure 10 mm thick. HTC has already covered the market with big screen smartphones, so it makes sense to bring this new ultra-slim phone to market, too. HTC’s One S will be equipped with a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor and with a Super AMOLED screen similar to that encountered in the Motorola RAZR, of the qHD (960×540) variety.

HTC’s One X (previously known as the HTC Edge) is set to come to market as one of HTC’s flagships. Reputed to be the first (if not one of them) smartphones to come to market with a quad core processor, the One X is set to be an absolute monster. In terms of hardware, we are looking at an nVidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor, clocked at 1.5Ghz, a 4.7 ” display with a resolution of 1280 x 720, an 8MP camera (f/2.2 lens), 1GB RAM, and 32 GB of internal storage (plus microSD card slot which supports up to 32GB). The HTC One X will run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, out of the box.

Another smartphone that we expect/hope to see at MWC 2012 is the HTC Zeta, albeit with a different name and likely different specs. While the specs may seem hard to believe, if they are to be believed it will be among the most advanced phones available with a 2.5GHz quad-core processor that runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and HTC Sense 4.0. Engadget leaked some images of  the Zeta, but a later update says that is only a concept and not a gadget that will soon be released. What’s to believe? 2.5Ghz might be too good to be true. Perhaps it will come after MWC 2012.

    SONY
The 2012 edition of Mobile World Congress is the event which will mark the transition of the Sony Ericsson product portfolio under the brand name Sony. We have already seen what the Sony Xperia S looks like, but at MWC they are likely to unveil the new Xperia Arc HD or Nozomi. AndroidOS.in has published pictures of the smartphone which they say it will have a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, a 12MP camera and a 4.3-inch 720p screen and will run on Android 4.0 out of the box.

TechRadar has brought some information to light that suggests Sony will be releasing an affordable smartphone dubbed the Sony Tapioca. With an 800 GHz single core processor, 512 MB RAM and Android 2.3 Gingerbread, it still will have enough to appeal to certain folks in certain parts of the world, permitting the price is right. Still, considering other leading manufacturers entry-level devices, we would hope that Sony improve the specs of this device or else it just won’t have what it takes to compete.

    LG
LG was the first manufacturer to launch a Tegra 2 device, so it’s safe to say that we should expect something similar at Mobile World Congress 2012. Although they have been very discreet about what they prepared for MWC, it is rumored that the LG X3 will be there for all to see.

The LG XE features an impressive a 4.7 inch HD screen (1280 x 720), 16GB of internal memory, an 8 MP camera and a secondary 1.3 MP camera, with a maximum thickness of 9mm.
There can be no doubt that LG will present at MWC the new LG Optimus 3D 2. The device will be thinner than its predecessor, at just 9.8 mm compared to 11.9 mm, it will be 20 grams lighter and will be based on a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor from Texas Instruments. It will have a 5 megapixel camera capable of shooting 3D, 8GB storage space, Bluetooth 3.0, NFC (Near Field Communication) and HSPA+ support. Currently, the LG Optimus 3D 2 smartphone will run Android 2.3 (Gingerbread).

    ACER
Acer CloudMobile has already won an iF prize for its original design and is a sign of things to come. Acer is striking out on its own here, and, as you will see below, this device in no way resembles the Galaxy S II or the HTC Sensation design types. This smartphone will hit the market in Q3 of this year, will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, comes with a 4.3-inch HD touch screen, Dolby Sound and will be 10 mm thick. As you probably guessed from its name, this device will offer cloud solutions that are designed to increase mobile productivity.

    RIM
While all the focus is this time on Android devices, especially those with the new Ice Cream Sandwich OS, RIM aims to return in force by launching the new version of the BlackBerry 10 operating system. Mobile World Congress will be the first presentation of this new software, and RIM seems very optimistic about this mainly because it will be able to run Android based applications.

    NOKIA
It seems that the once great giant is in do-or-die mode. For MWC, Nokia will be launching no less than six smartphones. Three of them are Windows Phone based, and three will run the already well-known Symbian. The most circulated name regarding Nokia at World 2012 MWC, is the Lumia 900, which could benefit from an official global launch.

    ZTE
ZTE is already a big name in the technology world. The company's releases may now begin to generate real trends in the industry given that the Chinese manufacturer works with both Google (Android) and Microsoft (Windows Phone). Expectations are high this year for ZTE, and the company's new phones and tablet PCs could compete with any big famous brand. They’ve already surpassed RIM to take the fifth spot globally, so we can expect some good things from them going forward.

    HUAWEI
We were really impressed by what we saw from Huawei at CES 2012. Their Ascend P1 and P1S phones were the thinnest superphones we’d ever laid our hands on, and they ran butter smooth with some serious power under the hood. Needless to say, we’ve been assured that they are pulling out all the stops this year, and will likely debut a quad-core device at MWC 2012. What remains to be seen is whether or not they can jam pack a 720p HD Super AMOLED display into one of their sub 7mm thin profiled phones. Either way, fresh new hot tech from Huawei is right around the corner.

    Tablets

    SAMSUNG
Besides the much-anticipated Galaxy S III, the one device we do not know exactly whether or not it will be shown at Mobile World Congress 2012, is Samsung’s reputed 11.6″ tablet. Samsung said they will still come with ”something interesting”. It could be a new model Galaxy Tab.  The new model could come with an impressive 11.6″ display. The diagonal will be accompanied by a double high resolution of 2560 × 1600 pixels, which translates into an increase of four times as many pixels. The tablet was presented at an event as a concept and will run on the new Exynos 5250 chipset with dual core processor at 2 GHz. What remains to be seen is what the huge 11.6″ screen will look like.

    ASUS
The Taiwanese company has already announced that the Asus Padfone‘s commercial version will be shown at MWC 2012. A quad-core smartphone sits elegantly in a tablet PC which extends its battery power. ASUS's brand new hybrid sounds very promising, especially since it may to potentially be able to function with the keyboard dock of the Transformer Prime. Of course, this is all still speculation, but who knows? The Padfone prototype shown at CES last month had a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, but there are various sources stating that they will abandon this chipset for a Tegra 3 chipset from nVidia.

    Other Brands:
    NVIDIA
NVIDIA announced a few days ago that they will be present at Mobile World Congress 2012. The company also announced some of the products that will employ the new Tegra 3 SoC. As expected, all products will benefit from quad-core processors from nVidia and will have the Android operating system. What we don’t know, and would be very interesting, is if they make mention of Tegra 4.

Either way, we’ll be there covering it for you! Are there any products that you are excited about for Mobile World Congress 2012? Let us know in the comments!  Also, if your interested, check out our Best Android Phones of 2012 for a sense of what’s to come.
