Samsung announces winners of the Galaxy Note developer challenge

Posted: 23 Apr 2012 03:02 PM PDT

Back in the beginning of March, Samsung launched a Galaxy Note developer challenge, with $200,000 in prizes, in an effort to challenge developers to make new apps for their tablet-phone hybrid. Just two months later, and they've chosen the winners, each with their own creativeness. In first place, with the "Best Overall App," is Chiu-ki Chan, who made "Monkey Write * Learn Chinese" and scored the grand prize of $100,000. The "Best Overall App" that grabbed second place was "Maze Racer" by Roger Peters and David McCanless, which cashed in on a $50,000 prize. Rounding out the top three was "Drawing Pad" by Christopher Lott and Daren Murtha, who walked away with a cool $25,000. Congratulations to these three, as well as the numerous honorable mentions that entered the contest.

The full press release can be found below, along with the links to the top three apps. If you've got a Galaxy Note, these are definitely apps that you need to try for yourself.

Samsung Galaxy Note headed to T-Mobile?

Posted: 23 Apr 2012 02:10 PM PDT

We recently learned that Samsung has sold more than 2 million units of the Galaxy Note, so it's safe to say that it's popular. The device made its début in the U.S. when it launched on AT&T and there are rumors abound that Verizon and Sprint will be launching it as well.

Now we're hearing whispers that the device will be hitting T-Mobile as well. According to a leaked user agent profile, the codename of the device is the Samsung SGH-T879, and all we know about it is the 1280×800 resolution, which is only found on the Galaxy Note. The device is also certified by Bluetooth SIG and WiFi Alliance as a phone, which rules out the possibility of a tablet.

Another shot was leaked by TmoNews that actually gives us a glimpse of the phone's 'About' section. It's rocking the same Android 4.0 build we saw on AT&T's Galaxy Note, along with TouchWiz 4.

For now, we're taking all this with a grain of salt and waiting for either Samsung or T-Mobile to clear the air. With that being said, is anyone looking forward to T-Mobile's version of the Note? Which of the remaining three carriers do you think will get the Galaxy Note first? Let us know in the comments!

Motorola Photon 4G successor leaked for Sprint

Posted: 23 Apr 2012 01:59 PM PDT

Time to add yet another handset to the list of rumored devices, this time it's one headed for Sprint.  Pocketnow has received word that a successor to last year's Photon 4G is on the way, however that's about all they know at this point.  With no time frame, price, or specs to share with us, they advise that it may be called the Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE.

As to what the Q indicates remain unclear at this moment however Pocketnow believes it may suggest (Q)uad-core.  Just for giggles, we'd like to toss (Q)WERTY keyboard in the mix.  We expect something with lapdock capability, at least 1GB RAM, a 720p display, and 8-megapixel camera.  That is, of course, assuming Sprint and Motorola want to keep pace with the rest of the pack.

HTC to compete with Samsung in the processor market?

Posted: 23 Apr 2012 01:33 PM PDT

Nowadays, a lot of manufacturers like Samsung are making their own chipsets for devices. ChinaTimes is reporting that HTC has teamed up with ST-Ericsson, and together they will create processor chips for their low end smartphones.

At the moment, this is only rumor, but if HTC is really making their own processor, then it means we'll hopefully see some higher end Android phones from HTC. Theoretically, these would be cheap compared to current low-end devices, because HTC will be manufacturing the processor itself. Word on the street is that it will take at least 18 months before we see any device powered by an HTC processor, so we'll just have to wait and see.

So who's excited to see what an HTC-branded processor can do? Anyone think OEMs should stick to NVIDIA and Qualcomm-branded processors? Drop a comment below!

ZTE wants a piece of that Galaxy Note market

Posted: 23 Apr 2012 09:51 AM PDT

Chinese handset maker ZTE wants to get in on some of the emerging phone/tablet hybrid market that Samsung seems to own with the Galaxy Note.  Speaking with reporters, ZTE's head of handset strategy, Lv Qianhao, recently indicated that they would be looking to the combination experience for a pair future products.

"We want to come up with the next generation of a Galaxy Note-type product - a combo product of handsets and tablets."

As the company pushes forward with plans to become a top-three worldwide player in the industry, ZTE will have to step out from the shadows and become a recognizable brand name.  A big part of that strategy will include a heavier U.S. presence.  We've already seen them drop a number of devices here over the last couple of months, including the Optik tablet and Fury smartphone.  If they can bring some of that high end Era power to our local carriers then they stand as good as chance as anyone else in the ever-evolving Android space.  While Samsung, Motorola, and HTC command a chunk of the market, other companies like ZTE and Huawei are inches from breakout success.

Would you consider picking up one of ZTE's phone/tablet hybrid devices for yourself?  Why or why not?

Droid Incredible 4G spied on DroidDoes site with $300 price tag

Posted: 23 Apr 2012 08:49 AM PDT

Verizon appears to be making some final moves around their next Droid smartphone, the HTC Droid Incredible 4G.  The handset briefly appeared on the carrier's DroidDoes website before disappearing into the ether.  Thankfully there are bloggers and eagle-eyed enthusiasts who are quick on the screen capture button.

Specifications for the Droid Incredible 4G are pretty much what we've been expecting and point to a mid-to- high-end HTC that combines pieces and parts from the Incredible, Rezound, and One series. Powered by Android 4.0 and running Sense 4, the 4G LTE smartphone boasts a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage, and 8-megapixel rear camera.  Additional specs include a 4.0-inch qHD Super LCD display, microSD expansion,  and a 1700mAh battery.

If there were one complaint we'd like to register here it's the $299 price point.  While the hardware and software package is better than some other Verizon handsets, we have a hard time justifying more than $199-$249 at this time.  Considering that the carrier is expected to offer a Galaxy S III and Droid Fighter/Razr HD in the near future, this HTC model could get lost in the shuffle.

Samsung’s “Next Galaxy” will help you stand out from sheep

Posted: 23 Apr 2012 08:17 AM PDT

Samsung has gone into full-on hype mode for their May 3 Unpacked event, teasing "The Next Galaxy" in a YouTube video.  We've embedded the clip below which is a little over one minute of footage of outer space and vague promise. We're not given any specs or details however we're told that it will help us stand out from..."sheep." Not the best stuff we've seen out of Samsung's camp but we're optimistic that the real ads will do the handset justice.

We're interested to learn if Samsung is dropping hints in this video that fly right over our heads.  "view grows even wider..." "power to explore..." Quad-core smartphone with 1080p widescreen display?  One could only hope.

Oh, and before you go clicking the link to the "TheNextGalaxy.com" we'll spoil it for you: It's a redirect to Samsung Mobile's Youtube channel, for now. Perhaps after May 3rd we'll get some goodies?

Samsung SCH-i200 ‘Jasper outed for Verizon

Posted: 23 Apr 2012 07:21 AM PDT

The Bluetooth SIG recently outed yet another Samsung smartphone, SCH-i200 'Jasper' which appears to be headed to Verizon.  Running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the handset is expected to have a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor and a WVGA display.  In other words, a potential mix of high-end power with mid-range screen technology.

Verizon has a history of offering budget-friendly Samsung models that complement their top-tier devices so we might expect the same here.  We fully anticipate 4G LTE connectivity for the Jasper as Verizon doesn't have plans for 3G devices in 2012.

It will be interesting to see how this fits into Verizon's lineup with the Galaxy S III (presumably) heading our way in the next few weeks.  Might the Jasper be one of those $50-$100 smartphones that sees moderate success?  And which name will the SCH-i200 end up with?  Because, ya know, that's what is most important...
