Think you could game on a tablet for 26 hours in a row? Ever dream that your name would appear in the Guinness Book of World Records? Want a shot at $50,000 in cash prizes?

Today Qualcomm announced they are working with the Guinness Book of World Records to host the first ever Snapdragon Gaming World Record Challenge at this year’s E3. Gamers will be provided with a Snapdragon-powered Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and then be challenged to play the latest Android games to beat the record of Longest Video Games Marathon on a Tablet.

Qualcomm tells us they have partnered with popular developers Gameloft, Halfbrick, Sega, NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc., Glu and Com2Us, so there should be plenty of games to keep you going.

If you live in the Los Angeles area, and we know a lot of you do, then you should register for the qualification event that is taking place later this month. Anyone who is a California resident and over the age of 18 can sign up, and they will be entered into a random drawing for one of 120 spots for the qualification party.

Qualification Party details include:

  • What: Snapdragon Gaming World Record Challenge Qualification
  • Where: Lexington Social House, 1718 Vine St., Hollywood, CA
  • When: Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 7:oo PM

The top 50 Challengers will win a coveted seat for the Snapdragon Gaming World Record Challenge at E3 from 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 5 through to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 6.

Those who are lucky enough to qualify for the World Record challenge will have a chance to score some serious cash prizes and a new Android tablet.

Samsung opens sign up page for the latest updates about the US version of Galaxy S III

Want to be the first to find out when Samsung announces details on the US versions of the Samsung Galaxy S III? They just opened up a registration page for the device and promised customers will receive the latest updates about their highly anticipated device in exchange for your email address.

Some will probably notice there is a field for carrier preference that lists AT&T, C Spire, Metro PCS, Sprint, T-Mobile, US Cellular and Verizon, but we wouldn’t read too much into that. However, Samsung did say the device will come to 296 mobile operators in 145 countries, so we wouldn’t be surprised if it eventually landed on all those.

Could the Galaxy S III come to all these US carriers? Maybe...

Samsung Galaxy S III defeats iPhone 4S in GPU benchmarks

We knew the Exynos 4 Quad chip inside the Samsung Galaxy S III was fast, and now we have the benchmarks to back it up. Brian Klug from Anandtech ran a series of performance benchmarks on the Galaxy S III and found it had the fastest graphics performance of any mobile device he had tested.

These results are impressive, but keep in mind the US version of the Galaxy S III with LTE will likely have a different processor. Most insiders believe it could feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 processor, as seen in the AT&T HTC One X, but we are still waiting on the official specs from Samsung.

Make sure you hit up the source link for additional performance results.

Galaxy S III to be sold at glass Samsung Pin pop-up stores

Samsung just unveiled the Galaxy S III superphone, the latest in Samsung’s line of flagship devices. The Galaxy S III will go on sale worldwide starting in May, and apart from the traditional retail and cellular outlets, Samsung has introduced another way to get your hands on the device: glass Pin pop-up stores that will be featured throughout London and (hopefully) elsewhere.

pinsdsc03662mat600 samsung1 samsung2 samsung3 samsungpostimage galaxy-s-iii-pin

These pop-up stores will serve as showcases for the Galaxy S III, and you will presumably be able to purchase the device either unlocked or with carrier contract from these locations. Don’t expect Samsung to go ahead and open their own retail locations anytime soon, however, as these are temporary storefronts to coincide with the launch of their next flagship device. We’re not convinced that a standalone Samsung store is the best way to push Samsung’s products, though they certainly have enough devices to fill one.

If you’re in the UK, look for these stores to come to your location a bit later this month, likely focused around the London area. Those of us outside of the UK may have to wait a bit longer, if we’re to see these stores in our country at all.

What do you think? Like the idea of a Samsung standalone store for the Galaxy S III line?

T-Mobile could be the only US carrier with quad-core Samsung Galaxy S III

Posted: 03 May 2012 01:19 PM PDT

galaxy-s-iii-beam

Today Samsung announced the Galaxy S III which features their own Exynos 4 Quad processor. According to some leaked benchmark scores, it should offer the fastest graphics performance, topping NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4.

However, most US consumers will likely not see this quad-core beast inside their carrier version of the Galaxy S III. Samsung stated in their press release that “specifications may differ on the LTE version” and we are expecting that means they will feature a different processor.

We expect that AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon will all offer the LTE version of the device, while T-Mobile will go with a HSPA+ version. That means that only T-Mobile is likely to get the quad-core version that will be similar to the international version.

The rest of the Galaxy S III models with LTE will likely feature the dual-core Snapdragon S4, if previous rumors turn out to be true. This chip might not have as fast of a GPU as the Exynos 4 Quad, but it should still be very competitive in normal usage and battery life.

One smaller possibility is that Samsung might surprise US customers and go with their newer Exynos 5 Dual processor, the first chip to use ARM’s Cortex-A15 CPU core and Mali-T604 GPU. This chip was said to go into mass production in Q2, and it should be ready for the summer release of the Galaxy S III in the US.

Based on what we saw with the HTC One X, it really shouldn’t matter for now. Their flagship device had different processors for different regions, but we found that you couldn’t tell a difference in normal usage. However, that could change in the future as more developers take advantage of quad-core processors and upgrade their apps to be multi-threaded.

Either way, the Galaxy S III on AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon will likely be “dual-core” and not “quad-core.”

Flipboard comes to Android via the Galaxy S III, wider launch coming soon

I’m not ashamed to admit that I own an iPad to go along with the 3 Android tablets currently on my desk. There are just several applications available for the iPad that haven’t yet made their way to Android tablets, or (perhaps, worse) as scaled up Android phone applications that are not pleasant to use.

One application I use religiously to consume a multitude of content on the iPad. Flipboard presents a personalized magazine out of information being shared with you on RSS feeds and social networks, and presents it in a photo-centric way. Flipboard integrates with Pocket and Instapaper, applications that allow you to save stories for later consumption.

In short, I’ve been hoping for ages that Flipboard would be coming to Android, and it appears the wait will soon be over. The newly-unveiled Samsung Galaxy S III will have an exclusive Flipboard application for a period of time, and Flipboard will then travel to various Android devices after a few months. You can sign up to be notified of when Flipboard is fully-available for Android by visiting their website.

We’ll bring you the latest from Flipboard for Android as more information is unveiled. Stay tuned!

Samsung Galaxy S III coming to US carriers “this summer”, optimized for the fastest LTE and HSPA+ networks

Today Samsung announced that the Galaxy S III would be coming to some international markets by the end of May, but they were not very specific about the US release date. Thankfully Samsung Mobile US sent us a statement that narrowed down things a little bit. Read on for the full details.

“Samsung Mobile is planning a U.S. version of Galaxy S III, optimized for the fastest LTE and HSPA+ networks in the U.S., which will be available in the summer of 2012.  Exact timing and retail channel availability is not being announced at this time. We believe the Galaxy S III is the most anticipated product in the 20-year history of Samsung Mobile; therefore, we will continue to share information as it becomes available.”

We also spotted on Samsung’s site that is says, “Specifications may differ on the LTE version.” No processor model has been announced, so the US version could end up with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 chip as rumored.

Hopefully, we will get some more information next week at CTIA Wireless in New Orleans.

Update: Various sources are reporting the Galaxy S III will arrive in the US in June. Chris Ziegler of The Verge says sources told him it is coming to Sprint.

Under AllShare Play is also the 'Group Cast' feature that allows you to share your screen among multiple friends on the same Wi-Fi network; you can make comments and draw changes at the same time with your co-workers, witnessing real-time sharing on your individual device.
Human-centric Design with Uncompromised Performance
The GALAXY S III not only presents features with enhanced usability, but also provides an ergonomic and comfortable experience through its human-centric design. Its comfortable grip, gentle curves, and organic form deliver a rich human-centric feel and design. Inspired by nature, its design concept is the flow and movement of nature. The elements of wind, water and light are all evoked in the physical construct of the GALAXY S III. In its essence, the minimal organic design identity is reflected in the smooth and non-linear lines of the device. Available in Pebble Blue and Marble White at launch, Samsung will introduce a variety of additional color options.
With a 4.8" HD Super AMOLED display, the GALAXY S III offers a large and vivid viewing experience. Samsung Mobile's heritage Super AMOLED display even enhances to HD and 16:9 wider viewing angles. To ensure faster content sharing and connectivity, the GALAXY S III offers Wi-Fi Channel Bonding which doubles the Wi-Fi bandwidth.
The GALAXY S III also sports a range of additional features that boost performance and the overall user experience in entirely new ways. It introduces 'Pop up play,' a feature that allows you to play a video anywhere on your screen while simultaneously running other tasks, eliminating the need to close and restart videos when checking new emails or surfing the Web. Its 8MP camera features a zero-lag shutter speed that lets you capture moving objects easily without delay – the image you see is the picture you take. With the 'Burst shot' function that instantly captures twenty continuous shots, and the 'Best photo' feature that selects the best of eight photographs for you, the GALAXY S III ensures users a more enhanced and memorable camera experience. HD video can be recorded even with the 1.9MP front-facing camera, which you can use to capture a video of yourself. Improved backside illumination further helps to eliminate blur in photos that result from shaking, even under low lights.
Mobile payment is also accessible with the device through advanced Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. The gaming experience is enhanced through 'Game Hub,' providing access to numerous social games, while Video Hub brings users high quality TV and movies. Furthermore, Samsung Music Hub will offer a personal music streaming service. Game Hub, Video Hub and Music Hub will be introduced in select countries initially and soon rolled out to global markets.
