Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 arrive at AT&T

Posted: 09 Nov 2012 10:49 AM PST

If you’re an AT&T customer who has been holding out for either the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 or the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, then good news, because both devices are available today in AT&T stores. Starting today you can pick up the handset that has taken the world of smartphones by storm with 3 million units sold since launch. Pretty impressive when you consider that the Galaxy Note 2 only launched back at the end of September.

It’s also impressive when you remember that the Galaxy Note 2 has a massive 5.5-inch screen that some thought would be too big for a lot of consumers. “Phablets” are still a pretty new idea, but the original Galaxy Note showed us that consumers like the big screens, so it’s no surprise that we’re sitting here today talking about the Galaxy Note 2. Aside from the screen, it also happens to be a really good phone – one of the best Android handsets on the market right now, in fact.

If you want to take home the Galaxy Note 2, it’ll require a pretty hefty payment of $299, and that’s with a two-year contract. The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is a little more expensive, as it’s currently going for $399 at AT&T. That’s with a two-year contract too, so be sure to keep that in mind.

Though, we have to say that the hardware you’re getting for those prices isn’t too shabby. The Galaxy Note 2 comes equipped with a quad-core Samsung Exynos processor clocked at 1.6GHz and 2GB of RAM, while the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 comes running a dual-core Texas Instruments OMAP 4 processor clocked at 1GHz and working in tandem with 1GB of RAM. Are you going to be picking either up from AT&T?

ASUS offering cash vouchers for Nexus 7 buyers in Europe

Posted: 09 Nov 2012 10:48 AM PST

When Google announced that their Nexus 7 tablet would be getting a price drop on October 29th, and that the 8GB model would be replaced with a 16GB offering it was good news. Sadly, many paid $249 for the 16GB model only to see it drop in price a few days later — and I’m sure a few were upset. In Europe ASUS has confirmed they’ll be rewarding vouchers to those who purchased before October 29th.

On October 29th Google announced the new 32GB and HSPA+ capable Nexus 7 tablet. The same day they announced the 16GB model would now be offered for the same price as the 8GB version before it. Obviously many are upset with the fact that a few days ago they paid much more than it currently costs now.

ASUS UK has confirmed that users who purchased the Nexus 7 before October 29th are eligible to receive a €30 voucher, or €25 in the UK right from ASUS themselves to make up the difference. Users in Europe that purchased the tablet before the 29th from Google or ASUS only are eligible. You’ll need to register the tablet online, with receipt (proof of purchase), and apply for the voucher before November 30th.

Sadly the voucher will only be good in the ASUS online store. Users can snag a free case, additional chargers, or whatever else you feel the need to purchase from the ASUS online store. So far this is the only report of any sort of voucher program, but we have a feeling the US and other regions could get the same treatment. We know many of you are upset over the change so stay tuned for more details.

DROID RAZR M Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update gets the green light

Posted: 09 Nov 2012 10:28 AM PST

We have some excellent news this afternoon from the folks at Motorola. This morning Motorola approved the update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for their popular DROID RAZR M over on Verizon Wireless. We were told this would be the first RAZR to be updated to Jelly Bean, and it looks like the wait should only be a little bit longer before you can all enjoy Jelly Bean.

While announcing their new RAZR line back in September, Motorola’s newly appointed CEO made a point to say meet the “New Motorola” up on stage. Part of that new Motorola was that updates would be coming faster, hardware would be more impressive with the less is more approach. Releasing top quality smartphones less frequently, that way your DROID 3 won’t get replaced by a DROID 4 within 6 months, and more.

Today Motorola has confirmed the Jelly Bean update for their popular 4.3-inch edge-to-edge screen packing DROID RAZR M is finally ready, and has been given the green light. While the update hasn’t been confirmed yet by Verizon support, Motorola is seeding it to test units as we speak. Hopefully if all goes well the mass public will be enjoying Android 4.1 JB, Google Now, enhanced notifications and more all within the next week or two.

This is an excellent sign for Motorola considering the RAZR M was released about two months ago. Obviously we can’t expect all updates to arrive within 2 months, but that would be impressive. With their version of Android being so similar across devices we can also expect the popular RAZR HD and MAXX HD to see it before the end of the year too. Hopefully Android 4.2 is coming in January. Stay tuned for more details.

Pulse reading app updated with unlimited pages, improved navigation, and more

Posted: 09 Nov 2012 08:51 AM PST

One of the more popular reader applications, known as Pulse, has just received a huge update that brings it to version 3.0. This update adds some slick new features, some of which are exclusive the Android version of the app. The biggest new feature for the update is addition of unlimited pages. Now, users can add as many sites as they want, which should make using the app a whole lot more enjoyable.

The update also adds improved navigation through a slightly tweaked UI. There is a new sidebar that displays all of your sources and settings at a glance. With a simple swipe or tap, the sidebar will pop out and show you all the pertinent information quickly. This should make using the app more efficient, which will allow you to get in, read your news, and move on with your day. The update also greatly improves the app’s search function. It can now pull in information from sites like Tumblr, YouTube, Reddit, Facebook, Google, Flickr, Blekko, and more. Version 3.0 of Pulse also adds customizable pages and infinite scrolling.

As far as Android exclusives, the app adds a brand new widget. It displays your current top story in a customizable view. It also features greatly improved notifications on Android. You can customize how often the app notifies you of your favorite sources’ top stories, so you can be notified as often, or as rarely as you want.

The update is available right now from Google Play. The app went free a while ago, and it is still available without you needing to open your wallet. If you’re looking for a new way to read the latest news, this app is definitely worth a look.

Acer Iconia Tab A220 with Tegra 3 leaks in Glbenchmark

Posted: 09 Nov 2012 07:57 AM PST

It looks a new Acer tablet is going to hit the market. The leak comes from Glbenchmark, and it seems to confirm the existence of the Acer Iconia Tab A220. Glbenchmark has shown a real knack for finding devices before the manufactures are ready to announce them, so when we see a new device come up with that name attached, we tend to get pretty excited at the possibilities.

The alleged tablet looks to be packing some pretty solid specs. According to the leaked benchmarks, it flaunts Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean for its OS. It also comes equipped with a quad-core 1.3Ghz Tegra 3 processor. The size of the tablet remains a mystery, but the screen’s resolution is 1280 x 752.

Perhaps, we could be looking at something comparable to the Acer Iconia Tab A700 that hit the market recently, just in a 7-inch version. Perhaps it could be a 10-inch tablet with a lower resolution, and thus, making it available on more of a budget. Either way, this could be a tablet worth keeping your eyes on.

If the device were to be 7-inches, that would be a pretty solid resolution. That, along with the beast of a processor, could make this tablet a serious competitor. Of course, leaked benchmarks are easy enough to fake, so we have to take this rumor with a grain of salt. Hopefully this thing turns out the be the real deal, but only time will tell. As always, we will keep you posted and let you know if anything more concrete is announced in regards to this tablet.

Sony brings Xperia advance to the US unlocked with no contract

Posted: 09 Nov 2012 07:26 AM PST

Sony is bringing a new Android phone to market in the US, and it’s available unlocked, without the need to sign a contract with a carrier. The Xperia advance is available now from many online retailers such as Newegg. It retails for $299, which is a pretty awesome price for an unlocked device.

The device is available in three colors choices; warm yellow, pure white, and tactile black. Sony designed this phone to be durable. It is water resistant in depths between zero to 39 inches for up to 30 minutes. It also comes with scratch-resistant mineral glass, so the phone should be able to withstand some of life’s little accidents without breaking or scratching.

As far as specs go, the phone is looking pretty solid. It comes with a 3.5-inch screen that supports a 480 X 320 resolution. It comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread installed, but it is upgradable to Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0. It has a 1GHz dual-core processor and 512MB of RAM. It also comes with 8GB of internal memory and a 5MP camera. While not top of the line by any means, when you consider the price and the fact that it is unlocked, it’s not a bad deal at all.

The device supports UMTS HSPA 850, 1900, 2100 bands. It also works with GSM GPRS/EDGE 850, 900, 1800, 1900. Make sure your carrier of choice supports these bands before you run out and purchase the phone. If you’ve been waiting for a durable Android device with no contract, this could be the phone for you.

Apple versus Samsung judge will review jury foreman misconduct claims

Posted: 09 Nov 2012 06:17 AM PST

Remember that $1-billion judgement Samsung was ordered to pay Apple? Well Samsung is not ready to give up yet, and they have convinced the judge who oversaw the case to look into the claims that jury foreman Vel Hogan concealed information during the screening process to pick the jury for the case. Judge Lucy Koh will "consider the questions" and look at how much information Apple attorneys had on Hogan. She has set a hearing for December 6 to look into the issue.

Samsung is clearly working every angle it can to get that massive judgement against it thrown out. Who wouldn’t? $1-billion is a whole lot of money. Samsung has been claiming that it did not receive a fair trial because Hogan did not disclose that he had been sued by his former employer, Seagate.

Samsung believes that because Seagate and Samsung have a "substantial strategic relationship" the suit should have been reported. The suit also led to Hogan declaring bankruptcy, a fact Samsung felt could sway his fair decision-making.

Cnet reports that its legal experts claim that is extremely hard to get a decision overturned for alleged jury misconduct. The experts claim that there was no outside influence on Hogan or other jurors in this case, which is what is needed to get a verdict overturned in a case like this. Hogan has responded that the judge didn't ask for complete listing of all lawsuits he had been involved with. Therefore, it seems as if he gave the information asked of him, which might make it hard for Samsung to win this appeal.

Google Nexus 10 spotted on Walmart shelves a few days early

Posted: 08 Nov 2012 04:36 PM PST

It looks like those Google Nexus 10 tablets might be shipping to retailers around the country already. If you’re lucky they might be on shelves in a few local Walmart stores too. The folks from XDA Developers posted up a picture showing the Nexus 10 on sale for $499 at Walmart — even though the official launch date isn’t until the 13th.

Apparently the Google Nexus 10 tablet is already reaching retail stores across the country with multiple sightings in local Walmart stores. We can expect a few other actual retail stores like Staples to probably do the same soon. Walmart is asking the same $499 for the 32GB model of the tablet as Google in their Play Store — which ships on November 13th.

We should all know plenty about the Google Nexus 10 by now, but if not here’s our full Nexus 10 Review. The tablet comes with the absolute highest resolution screen to date. Coming in at 2560 x 1600 on a 10-inch display. We have Samsung’s Exynos 5250 dual-core processor chugging at 1.7 GHz, 2GB of RAM, and of course this model will offer 32GB of storage.

Running on android 4.2 Jelly Bean the Nexus 10 is quite the impressive tablet. With multiple user accounts, quick settings, and tons of awesome new features this is the tablet to get in the 10-inch form factor. We’re sure you already know plenty about the Nexus 10, so instead just let us know if you find one in your own local stores. Obviously your mileage may vary on this one but drop us a comment (or tip with pics) if you manage to get your own a few days early. Otherwise the Nexus 10 will be in stores on the 13th.

Verizon expects 4G LTE rollout to be complete by mid 2013

Posted: 08 Nov 2012 04:01 PM PST

Today we heard some interesting news from the guys at Verizon Wireless. While network news and conference calls aren’t always that exciting, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo had a few comments regarding their ever expanding 4G LTE network. Today Verizon stated they expect their entire network to be fully 4G LTE compatible by mid 2013 — 6 months sooner than originally planned.

This is truly good news for the millions and millions of Verizon users that enjoy their nationwide 3G and 4G LTE network currently. The reason this is news is simply for the fact that Verizon already covers over 400 networks with 4G LTE, reaching over 250 million users. Compared to the competition they are miles ahead, and aren’t slowing down anytime soon.

With Verizon launching their first 4G LTE network just 22 months ago, it’s crazy to think they will have their entire network covered with the blazing fast data speeds by the middle of next year. Compare that 400 markets number with AT&T, who barely is getting close to 100, and then the Now Network that has a whole 20 or so — Verizon has an extremely large lead.

T-Mobile won’t even be launching their 4G LTE until early to mid next year, and Verizon will be completing theirs. Not to mention AT&T’s gaining traction, but Verizon will still have the biggest, largest, and now fastest network nationwide. I guess when Verizon said they’d roll out 4G LTE in a timely fashion, this is what they meant. For those considering a carrier switch Verizon will be looking even better in a couple of months.

AT&T offers $100 off any tablet after 2-year data plan agreement

Posted: 08 Nov 2012 02:13 PM PST

Today AT&T has just announced that starting tomorrow, Friday November 9th, AT&T stores and online will be offering $100 off any tablet after customers sign up for a qualifying 2-year data plan. Whether this be for the holidays or getting rid of some of that tablet stock in time for the Christmas season, we have all the details below.

If you’re considering a tablet this season, consider AT&T. Because starting tomorrow AT&T will give customers $100 off of any tablet after the signing of a 2-year data plan. Sadly this can’t be combined with a smartphone purchase, and is just for tablet buyers. This is mainly geared to get tablet buyers to actually sign contracts, instead of just buying Android tablets outright from AT&T themselves.

According to AT&T tablet customers can choose from several qualifying data plan options, including adding a tablet to their Mobile Share plan for just $10 per month. This means you can purchase a new tablet, and add that to your mobile share plan for $10 a month (the shared data plans) and as long as you sign a new 2-year contract — you’ll get $100 off. Here’s the full choice of tablet data plans from AT&T:

-AT&T Mobile Share: $10 to share between 1 GB and 20GB
-AT&T DataConnect 250MB: $15 for 250MB
-AT&T DataConnect 3GB: $30 for 3GB
-AT&T DataConnect 5GB: $50 for 5GB

Just to name a few AT&T offers the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9, the Pantech Element, and those Apple tablets that some people enjoy. Starting tomorrow you’ll be able to pickup any of these tablets and get a sweet $100 off to go towards a nice new leather case, or even purchase some awesome tablet apps in the process. Is this deal enough to make you sign a contract for one of AT&T’s tablet offerings?

Sony Yuga 5-inch 1080p phablet pictures leaked

Posted: 08 Nov 2012 01:43 PM PST

Lately we’ve been hearing rumors that Sony is also prepping their own 5-inch 1080p smartphone phablet to take on the Galaxy Note II, and HTC’s upcoming DROID DNA. Reports surfaced last month of the Sony Odin, but today we have another leaked smartphone that actually looks real. This is the rumored Sony Yuga complete with a 5-inch 1080p display.

Just like HTC’s J Butterfly, the Sony Yuga is reportedly rocking a 5-inch 1080p display with a 1794x1080p resolution due to the on-screen Android 4.1 Jelly Bean navigation buttons. It should come powered by the Snapdragon S4 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and be their new flagship with an impressive 12 megapixel camera on the rear. Here’s another quick photo that was leaked.

Thanks to XperiaBlog we have all these leaked photos to check out of this new phablet from Sony, but that’s all we have at the moment. Specs haven’t been confirmed, but multiple benchmarks lately have shown Sony has a device or two of this caliber in the works.

Physically the device looks rather thin, and seems to be built with a brushed aluminum design. With squared edges and in the image below you can clearly see a dedicated camera button — which makes sense if this phone will indeed have a 12 megapixel shooter. Sony usually reveals all their new goods at CES in Las Vegas so most likely we’ll only see a few leaks until January, then they’ll reveal all the details. Enjoy the gallery below of this potentially awesome Sony flagship smartphone.

Google TV Music and Movies heads to more countries November 13

Posted: 08 Nov 2012 12:28 PM PST

We have some excellent news this afternoon right from the folks at +Google TV regarding their music and movie offerings. As many of you know, Google Play Music and Movies are only available in select regions and countries. A list that is even smaller for those wanting the services on Google TV. Today Google’s announced the UK, Canada and more are all getting everything Google has to offer.

Today Google TV announced that they’ve expanded their Google Play Music, Movies, and TV to multiple countries around the world. Starting on November 13th Google TV users can enjoy these benefits in the UK, France, Germany, Canada, and Australia. That’s a pretty massive update that I’m sure many are extremely happy to hear.

When Google TV first got movies and music many were upset that this amazing new feature was simply for the US only, just like many new things introduced by Google. Today however that all changes and you guys will be able to buy, stream, and enjoy endless content right from your GTV.

Oddly enough, many of these countries still can’t enjoy Google Play Music on their smartphones and tablets yet, but will be getting the feature for their Google TV. Between the LG Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 being available next week, and then this news, I’m sure many across the UK and elsewhere are extremely excited. Again this will be headed to all the countries mentioned above starting November 13th. Who’s excited?

Motorola Electrify M available today from US Cellular

Posted: 08 Nov 2012 11:35 AM PST

If you’re in the reach of the regional carrier US Cellular‘s 4G LTE services they have a brand new phone available today that’s worth checking out. Being nearly identical to the recently released Motorola DROID RAZR M on Verizon, the Electrify M is an impressive budget-priced 4.3-inch smartphone that is anything but a budget handset. Read on for full details below.

Announced earlier this month, the Motorola Electrify M comes complete with an edge-to-edge 4.3-inch qHD 540×960 AMOLED display. One that actually looks pretty impressive on such a small phone thanks to having nearly no bezel on the edge-to-edge design. For more details on the very similar DROID RAZR M here’s our review.

The Electrify M will also come with the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage and a beefy 2,000 mAh battery — which is pretty impressive for such a small, thin, and sleek smartphone. You’ll also get an 8 megapixel rear camera with 1080p video, 1.3 front shooter, NFC capabilities, as well as Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich all for $99 — after a quick $100 mail in rebate.

Being a 4G LTE device, this will take advantage of US Cellular’s 4G LTE network, but for those not in an LTE area the price actually sadly increases to $149 after that same MIR. We were huge fans of the Motorola DROID RAZR M, and this phone is nearly identical aside from a few cosmetic changes on the outside. It’s available starting today from US Cellular online, and will be in stores tomorrow morning. Who’s buying?
