Nexus 7 spontaneously combusts, leaves behind toasty, melted corpse [PICS]

Note to self: Never leave a device charging while unattended. Why, you ask? Because there’s always the off chance that something like this could happen.

What you’re looking at are images of one user’s Nexus 7 after it was left charging — unattended — for a good couple of hours. When the owner returned to where the Nexus 7 should have been sleeping peacefully, she was greeted with a room with smoke and the Nexus 7 melted to a toasty Pop-Tart.

According to the Chinese forum where the images were posted, the user was using the factory OEM charger and the device was only left charging for a total of 3 hours before spontaneously combusting. We’ve seen cases in the past where shady characters have attempted to pass off exploding devices as a manufacturer defect, only to later find out the cause was owner misuse. This doesn’t appear to be indication of foul play and apparently ASUS has already dealt with the matter, sending off a shiny new replacement. Let’s hope the new one has better luck.

I know it’s unlikely, but I have to ask. Any Nexus 7 owners out there ever have their tabby explode on them? Does seeing this make you a little more cautious about leaving your Nexus 7 charging for long periods of time?

Thanks, Ash!

Motorola announces Jelly Bean for Droid RAZR M, talks about upcoming Test Drive program

For those who like to live on the wild side, staying on the bleeding edge of tech, say hello to Motorola’s newly announced Test Drive program. Announced along side the Motorola Droid RAZR M Jelly Bean update, the Test Drive Program is similar to what Moto has been doing all along with their soak tests, only this is a bit more exclusive. Motorola mentioned that it would only allow for a “few hundred” or so users sign up for early access to major updates, starting with Jelly Bean. I’m guessing those pre-JB will have to stick with soak tests in the Motorola Feedback Network. Details on how users can sign up will be provided at a later date, but we’ll stay on the lookout.

As I mentioned above, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean was also announced and is now rolling out for the Motorola Droid RAZR M. Software update 98.12.4 brings all the features you love from the J-Bean, giving you access to Google Now’s “always on” automated services, a smoother UI, as well as a handful of other enhancements and fixes. Here’s the full changelog per Verizon support:

Let us know if any of your guys’ RAZR M’s received the update yet. If not, you can always attempt to pull the update yourself by jumping into your Settings > About phone > System updates > Download. Don’t forget to visit our Droid RAZR M forums to discuss the update or just talk about general Android related topics. Godspeed.

ASUS refunding Nexus 7 owners in Europe for purchases prior to price drop

Posted: 09 Nov 2012 10:53 AM PST

Europeans who picked up a 16GB Nexus 7 before Google dropped the price of the tablet on October 29th are being treated to a refund courtesy of ASUS. Those that purchased the slate directly from ASUS or Google are eligible to receive a €30 voucher provided they register their purchase a provide a receipt showing the date of the transaction.

Users are eligible to apply for a voucher through November 30th with funds expiring on December 31st. There is no word from ASUS as to whether or not a similar program will be implemented in other regions, particularly the US. Google is already taking a big enough hit on the Nexus 7 given its US pricing (in Europe, the exchange rates have the tablet selling for slightly higher), so refunds for American customers don’t seem likely.

Samsung Captivate Glide gets Ice Cream Sandwich November 10th

Posted: 09 Nov 2012 08:26 AM PST

AT&T today announced the forthcoming availability of Ice Cream Sandwich for the Samsung Captivate Glide. The upgrade will bring the usual enhancements which Ice Cream Sandwich is known for, as well as a few Samsung-specific things that you probably won’t see in other smartphones.

AT&T has mentioned the addition of a new browser with tabs, a new lock-screen experience that now allows you to unlock a device straight to the camera, text or phone apps (in addition to the usual homescreen option), face unlock, a new typeface for better readability and more.

The upgrade will be headed to the forefront of your device starting tomorrow, November 10th so you’ll have all weekend to play with it before work and school ruin all the fun.

Jelly Bean it is not, but I’d go for some custom ROMs for that because its arrival is looking a tad doubtful at this point. More details should go live here by this time tomorrow so be sure to reference that page if you find yourself not sure what to do.

Notion Ink teases Adam II in first picture

Posted: 09 Nov 2012 07:39 AM PST

Just when we thought the Notion Ink Adam II would quietly glide into the realm of vaporware, the company behind the sequel to one of the most promising early Android tablets is teasing us with a blurry look at the back of the device. The picture doesn’t reveal much more than the basic shape of the Adam II, which looks to avoid rounded lines in favor of a more square slate. At least we know it exists.

The original Adam was one of the most talked about Android tablets leading up to its release. Many thought it would set the bar for all slates to follow. What we actually got was a fairly buggy piece of hardware that felt more like a prototype than a finished product. We’ve been waiting quite some time to get a peek at the followup, but perhaps that’s a good thing. After the disappointing launch of the original, Notion Ink will want to iron out all the kins with the Adam II before releasing it to the public.

Samsung Galaxy Camera now available in the UK

Posted: 09 Nov 2012 07:33 AM PST

Folks in the UK will be able to purchase the Samsung Galaxy Camera starting today because retailers like Clove and Expansys have made them available for purchase. This device isn’t a phone — bummer, I know — but Samsung has positioned it as the first mainstream point and shoot camera to run Android (Jelly Bean, in case you were wondering).

The specs do rival top-line smartphones, however, as it houses a 1.4GHz quad-core chipset, 1GB of RAM, a 4.8 inch 1280×720 display, 8GB of internal storage with expansion options, HDMI-out and more. It will be compatible with HSPA-enabled networks in case you don’t want to be limited to WiFi-only access.

But that’s not what you’re here for — the most important thing is that camera sensor that looks oh, so awesome. It’s a 16MP sensor that has 21x optical zoom and a pop-up Xenon flash. While some might say the price of this camera is not worth the performance it delivers compared to traditional point-and-shoot cameras in the same price range.

Speaking of price, it’ll come in starting at £399.00 for one, and that doesn’t come with a leather rope tethering you to a two-year contract. The device is available in both black and white, though we understand that black units at some places might not be immediately available for consumption. Expect it to begin shipping November 12th via Clove and around November 18th from Expansys.

Sony Xperia Advance comes to the US in unlocked form

Posted: 09 Nov 2012 06:55 AM PST

Sony has surprised us with a quick announcement that the Sony Xperia Advance is now available in the United States. You’ll have to grab this thing in unlocked form from Newegg, and it’ll cost you just $250 to walk away with it without being attached to any annoying two-year contracts.

The 3.5 inch form factor of the device makes it look smallish up against today’s behemoths, but we imagine there’s still a market for this size out there somewhere.

It sports a WVGA resolution, a 1GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 processor that comes with a Mali-400 GPU, 512MB of RAM, a 5 megapixel camera, 8GB of internal storage (but only 4GB are open to users) and more. The device is also built to be dust proof and water resistant, but as we always say it’s best to just avoid situations where your smartphone might be vulnerable wherever possible.

This is not meant to be a stud of a device, obviously, but for $250 anyone looking for a decent off-contract option to introduce themselves into the world of smartphones shouldn’t leave the checkout screen disappointed. This will work with all GSM carriers, but you’ll be limited to 2G on T-Mobile.

You will get 3G with AT&T, but it doesn’t look like HSPA+ is an option. The shortcomings in the radio department might be a little off-putting, but if your reason for buying this is strictly based on your budget then we’re sure you’ll find a way to cope with that. You can get started over at Newegg.com, and be sure to read on for full press details.

Shopper discovers Nexus 10 on display at local Walmart

Posted: 08 Nov 2012 07:54 PM PST

You gotta love Walmart. Not only are they the low priced leader, they always seem to let product slip out before its official street date. Take the Nexus 10 that — although not launching official until November 13th in the Google Play Store — was discovered by a late night shopper for sale at his local Walmart store. While he wasn’t able to purchase the tab (the source indicated that there wasn’t anybody around to help him), the fact that the Nexus 10 is on display, price tag and all, means there’s a good chance someone will walk out of the store with it. All it takes is one clueless employee to ring up a customer looking to get the jump on that official launch date. And with that, I’m off to my local Walmart in my jammies to see what I can dig up. Cheers.
