MetroPCS and Leap Wireless now offering no-credit-check handset financing

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 11:30 AM PST

If you had been considering getting a higher-end device, say the Galaxy S3 with MetroPCS and are not liking the $499 purchase price — there may be some help available. Granted, this help is not going to lower the price of the handset, but there is now the ability to finance the phone. In fact, both MetroPCS and Leap Wireless (Cricket) are offering financing.

SCHR820ZWAM

The financing offers will require the user to make a downpayment and then monthly payments. Nothing all that surprising in that respect. Both MetroPCS and Leap are offering financing through Progressive Finance. In addition, MetroPCS is also offering financing through a second company, BillFloat.

These finance companies are not requiring any credit checks, however you will need to have an active bank account. The companies will then make their money back on interest and repayment fees. Again, nothing all that surprising in that respect. MetroPCS did not go into specifics about the financing and instead confirmed to Fierce Wireless that they “allow customers the ability to use MetroPCS’ 4G LTE services on higher-priced handsets.”

As for Leap, it was mentioned that financing was available for those spending more than $200 and that customers will be able to finance up to 90 percent of the purchase price. Further details include having up to nine months to pay the financing down and not having to pay any interest if you are able to pay the loan within 90 days.

Bottom line, this could finally be an easier way for someone to get into a prepaid arrangement with a high-end device. Of course, we suggest paying that loan quickly to avoid those interest charges.

Facebook for Android v2.0 update claims to be twice as fast

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 11:27 AM PST

Today the folks from Zuckerberg and Co have just announced an update to Facebook for Android. They’re calling it version 2.0 even though we aren’t getting a redesigned app or anything. What we are getting however is speed. Facebook promises their new Android app will be twice as fast as before. Yup twice as fast thanks to native code rather than “webview.” We’ll see though.

face

Facebook for Android has been highly criticized by many, us included, over the speed and general sluggish performance of the app. Today they claim to have fixed many of those problems and feel so confident that they’ve promised double the performance and speed. We’ve learned Facebook started equipping employees with Android phones, requiring them to use the app as a way to focus on issues and then improve them.

Specifically, Facebook for Android v2.0 will be twice as fast when users look at photos, open their timeline, and noticeably quicker while launching on mobile. So far the app update isn’t available in the Google Play Store, but should be updated later today with all the changes.

“We’ve rebuilt news feed, notifications and Timeline for speed.”

They mention that they’ve rebuilt everything with speed in mind, but the actual look and feel doesn’t appear to have changed based on the few screenshots provided. Facebook is now a native app, instead of using HTML5. Once the update hits the Google Play Store later today we’ll be able to read the full changelog to see what’s new. For now Facebook is squarely focuses on speed. Something I’m sure many are happy to hear. Check for updates as it should be arriving soon.

Google Search updated with speed improvements

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 11:04 AM PST

Google‘s voice search and Google Now is quickly becoming one of my favorite and most used features on Android. Since initially launching Google Now with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Google has continued to improve this app into an awesome all-in-one solution. Today Google Search (Google Now for 4.1+) received another update, although the details remain behind closed doors.

Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 10.46.51 AM

Just a few days ago Google Search received a major update that brought forth tons of new features, improved results, and better prediction, and today they’ve updated it once again. Google introduced voice actions like “what’s this song” “scan a barcode” “post to Twitter” and more.

Today however users on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and above are noticing another quick update specially listed for Google Now users, although Google never updated the changelog. What this means is we all got a decently sized update but have no details on what actually changed. So far looking through the app we haven’t noticed any new features, but there is one thing that we have noticed — speed.

Google Now appears to be much faster than before. Now this could just be a placebo effect but Google Now launches faster, not to mention results and everything else appears a bit faster too. Most noticeable was the launch times from our homescreen, or just launching Google Now in general. Siri is already way slower than Google Now, and it just got faster. If you’ve noticed anything new after today’s “Google Search” update drop us a comment below.

HTC EVO 4G LTE Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update expected today

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 10:54 AM PST

This is not the first time we have heard about Jelly Bean coming for the HTC EVO 4G LTE, however as of now, it is looking like the update should begin rolling-out today. The details have yet to be officially confirmed, however a leaked page coming out of the Playbook has the update beginning today, December 13.

Screen-Shot-2012-05-11-at-11.27.12-AM1-540x3541

The one catch with that, the December 13 availability is user initiated, which simply means that you will need to venture into the settings and check for the update manually. Otherwise, those wiling to sit back and wait for the update notification to arrive — you have a bit of a wait. Well, a few weeks anyway. According to that same leaked page, the OTA network push will begin the week of January 3.

Otherwise, the update will be arriving as software version 3.15.651.16 and as Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean with HTC Sense 4+. Some of the goodies that you can expect include Google Now, improved notifications and the smoothness from Project Butter.

The changelog for the update also notes the following; improvements to the camera and gallery, improvements to Wi-Fi authentication and improvements to Calendar reminders. Finally, some of the fixes include issues dealing with personalized ringtones and a fix for those using links to go from a description in the calendar to the phone app.

AT&T brings 4G LTE to six new markets

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 10:44 AM PST

It would seem that today is 4G LTE expansion day for two of the nation’s biggest carriers. Hot on the heels of Verizon’s own 4G LTE expansion, AT&T has announced that it’s LTE network is now up and running in six new markets. On top of that, it has expanded its network in two existing markets, so a fair number of AT&T customers should be experiencing faster data speeds today.

att4G1

Looking at AT&T’s rundown of new markets, it seems that the carrier has launched LTE all across the nation. Its new markets stretch from one side of the map to the other, so it’s dotting the country with 4G LTE speed. If you live in any of the following areas, then you should be able to hop on AT&T’s LTE network starting today:

• Pullman, Washington
• Moscow, Idaho
• Hattiesburg, Mississippi
• Starkville, Mississippi
• Allentown, Pennsylvania
• Reno, Nevada

The company is also expanding existing service in Little Rock, Arkansas and Richmond, Virginia, meaning that more customers in those areas should be covered. It was only earlier this week that we talking about AT&T launching LTE in new markets, so the company has been working pretty hard to keep this roll out going at a fast pace. Indeed, the company managed to finish its roll out plan for 2012 early, so these new markets we’re hearing about today are just icing on the cake.

It’ll be interesting to see what AT&T does in 2013. The carrier originally said that it plans to cover 300 million people with its LTE network by the end of 2014, but if it keeps hitting these roll out goals early, then it could cover that many people well before it expects to. We’ll have to wait and see what happens, but in the meantime, we imagine we’ll be talking about AT&T’s network again really soon. Stay tuned.

ZTE Grand S announcement confirmed for January 8 during CES

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 10:20 AM PST

With CES quickly approaching, the news and rumors are bound to begin picking up. And while the rumors are always fun, the actual news is where it is at. That being the case, it looks like ZTE has confirmed that they will be announcing at least one smartphone during the event.

zte_logo

The details were posted on the official CES website, where they note that ZTE will announce the Grand S smartphone on January 8th. Granted, they have yet to offer complete set of specs, but they did reveal just enough to make us curious. According to the teaser, the ZTE Grand S will arrive as a “flagship handset” in the “high-end Grand Series of products.”

The ZTE Grand S will feature a 5-inch FHD display and will be made of ceramic and featuring a “traditional Chinese style.” Otherwise, ZTE confirmed to CNET that the Grand S will have a quad-core processor. And while we have yet to see any measurements, ZTE is teasing that this will be the ” world's thinnest for 5 inch FHD smartphones.”

All said and done, the phone sounds interesting enough, but then again, lots of phones can sound interesting in the teasers. Bottom line here, January 8 will be when we find out just how much a splash the Grand S will make — after all, carriers and pricing will play an important factor.

MOGA offering Android gamepad and Modern Combat 4 absolutely free

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 10:08 AM PST

We have an awesome deal for everyone this holiday season, one that you probably will have a hard time passing up. The popular MOGA game controller for Android (that is amazing) usually costs $50 new, but today they are giving it away completely free. The deal gets better too. Gameloft‘s brand new Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour is also free. All you must do is pay for shipping and handling. Awesome right?

Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 10.07.36 AM

There’s no fine print. No catch. PowerA is giving away their awesome universal Bluetooth game controller absolutely free as long as the user pays for shipping and handling. How can they do this? I don’t know but it’s awesome. To celebrate MC4 being built from the ground up with full MOGA support I guess they want to get the word out.

Here’s how! Simply go to the PowerA site and order the MOGA controller (if the site doesn’t completely crash) and during checkout you simply put in the promo code “secretsanta” at checkout. Done! All you do is pay for S&H and you’ll get the controller AND Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour for free.

No complaints from me. Modern Combat has some of the best graphics of any Android game, and is as close to Call of Duty as we’ll be getting for a while. Snag a few AAA batteries and toss them in that MOGA for the ultimate gaming experience. This deal only lasts until 12 PM PST today, or while supplies last. Better hurry. Enjoy!

Thanks Santa!

Verizon lighting up more 4G LTE in Washington and Oregon

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 09:56 AM PST

Earlier this month Verizon celebrated the 2-year anniversary of their 4G LTE, but they aren’t slowing down anytime soon. We know they’ve been updating at a very rapid pace and today have learned multiple Northwest markets will be getting lit up with 4G LTE. Verizon’s expects their entire LTE rollout to be complete in 2013, and they’re well on their way.

verizon-4g-lte

As usual Verizon has updated their news blog with additional details regarding multiple regions getting 4G LTE starting December 20th. Currently they offer their 4G LTE network services to over 400 markets and later this month are adding another 9 in Washington and Oregon. Below is the quick list of a few locations that will get the green light.

Klamath Falls, OR
Roseburg, OR
Kennewick, WA
Pasco, WA
Richland, WA
Port Angeles, WA
Port Townsend, WA
Sequim, WA

Verizon is hitting all locations rather hard as of late. Just a few weeks ago they lit up multiple new networks across different parts of New York that previously weren’t enjoying 4G LTE, and they aren’t slowing down either. Many regions like mentioned above aren’t extremely populated and it shows Verizon’s commitment to cover their entire 3G spectrum with faster speeds.

As mentioned above, Verizon is well ahead of their original plans and schedule for 4G LTE and expect their entire rollout to be 100% complete near the mid of 2013. It’s crazy to think that in just two years they’ve achieved so much. That, and it shows just how far AT&T and the rest are behind. If you’re located in the above cities stay on the lookout for LTE coming soon.

Lookout predicting toll fraud will continue and mobile spam will increase

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 09:38 AM PST

Touching back on the subject of malware on Android and it looks like we have some predictions coming from the folks at Lookout. Of course, the obvious here, Lookout does offer a Security and Antivirus app for Android devices. That being said, the folks at Lookout have estimated that from the beginning of 2012 and through the end of 2013 — 18 million Android users will have been affected by mobile malware.

lookout-banner

The other item to note here, while 18 million is a large number by itself, it could be considered small when you compare it to how many users are actually sporting an Android device. In other words, with some common sense being used, the issue with mobile malware is probably not one that many people should worry about all that much.

Otherwise, the report from Lookout did dive a bit further and stated that mobile spam will be increasing in volume and that toll fraud will continue. In fact, the report stated that “toll fraud will continue to dominate as the chosen monetization strategy for mobile malware writers.” With toll fraud, use caution when installing apps and regularly check your wireless bill to avoid any unauthorized charges. Interestingly enough, in 2012, 72 percent of the aware detections from Lookout were considered toll fraud.

And instead of being all scare, Lookout did also offer some tips on being safe. Some of these may seem obvious to the advanced user, and if that is the case, consider passing these off on some of your less geeky friends and family. Some of the tips include always checking URLs, understanding app permissions, making sure your phone and apps are up to date and keeping your connectivity settings in check (and in some cases, off when not being used).

Finally, the report also included what many would have expected — the suggestion to use a security app. Of course, Lookout was mentioned and while many may cry foul here, the app is actually rather nice and in addition to scanning for problem apps — it also is able to keep track of lost or stolen devices.

Three UK launches the LG Nexus 4

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 09:02 AM PST

As we had been expecting to happen, Three UK has officially launched the LG Nexus 4. The carrier will be offering the Nexus 4 as both pay-as-you-go and on agreement with The One Plan. And interestingly enough, Three is touting the Nexus 4 as having a three month exclusive on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

display_sg_perfect-540x3482

That bit aside though, those looking to make a purchase will be able to do so by visiting any of the Three retail locations, or online. The handset will have an upfront cost of £29 and then run you £35 per month for The One Plan. This is a 24-month agreement and includes all-you-can-eat data along with 2,000 minutes, 5,000 Three-to-Three minutes and 5,000 text messages.

At the moment, the Nexus 4 is showing as being available and in-stock with an estimated delivery date of December 17 (for those ordering online). Otherwise, if you cannot wait until Monday to take delivery, you can always venture out to a retail store and get one in-hand today.

Finally, those choosing the pay-as-you-go route, expect to pay £399.99 for the handset. With the device purchased you will then have a few options to consider. You can choose the All in One 15 for £15 or the All in One 25 for £25. Both of these options include all-you-can-eat data. The 15 plan also includes 300 minutes and 3,000 texts and the 25 plan includes 500 minutes and 3,000 text messages.

EE confirms plans to rollout LTE to 17 more UK locations

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 08:51 AM PST

EE has just confirmed its plans to rollout high-speed mobile data to 17 more UK towns and cities by March 2013. In addition to adding new locations, EE is working to improve coverage in existing LTE areas. EE says 4G density is “being increased on a daily basis.” EE is also working to improve its 3G network to support DC-HSPA, which will improve things for users who do not have 4G devices or are in an area where 4G has not rolled out.

eelte

The DC-HSPA part of the this update will certainly improve things for Orange and T-Mobile UK. While these two companies combined to form EE, customers on these networks do not actually get access to LTE data. EE plans to have 40-percent of its network covered by the faster DC-HSPA, but customers on the network will need to have devices that can support the higher speeds.

The complete list of new locations to receive 4G LTE in this new rollout is as follows: Bradford, Chelmsford, Coventry, Doncaster, Dudley, Leicester, Luton, Newport, Reading, Rotherham, St Albans, Sunderland, Sutton Coldfield, Walsall, Watford, West Bromwich, and Wolverhampton. While those cites will go live by the end of Q1 2013, EE also says Belfast, Hull, Maidenhead, and Slough will be switched onto 4G by the end of this year.

EE’s goal is to cover 98-percent of the UK population by the end of 2014. That’s certainly a loft goal, but one that should be great for UK customers. That being said, EE’s competition is bidding on 4G spectrum, with equally aggressive rollout plans promising LTE competition as early as midway through 2013.

BBC: Android is “extremely important” and iPlayer app updates are coming

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 08:23 AM PST

The BBC iPlayer app was updated for Jelly Bean back in mid-October, however since then, some things have changed. Namely, Android 4.2 has been released and 7-inch tablets (such as the Nexus 7) have become rather popular. On that note, details coming from the BBC spell out some big plans for the iPlayer app on Android.

bbc-iplayer

In fact, a recent posting on the BBC Internet Blog notes that “the Android platform is extremely important to the BBC and our audience and engineering for it requires an ongoing commitment.” Perhaps more to the point here, the iPlayer app will be getting some updates. The first of these updates is available in Google Play right now.

This most recent update includes support for Android 4.2 along with improved video performance over Wi-Fi. The app has also gotten an additional channel, BBC Alpha, and the overall design has been “polished.” This update brings the iPlayer app up to version 1.5.0.666.

Looking forward past this update, the details from the BBC also mention that they have a series of updates planned for the coming months. These updates will include improvements for tablets such as the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD as well to bring parity between the iOS and Android apps. Bottom line here, the iPlayer app has been updated and it looks like users should remain on the lookout for additional updates as we move into 2013.

Bump app gets update with ability to share any file

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 08:02 AM PST

Bump is one of the coolest ways to share stuff from your phone to another device. All you need to do is literally Bump your device against another one and you can send photos in an instant. They even added the ability to send files to your computer by simply visiting its website and Bumping your phone against your spacebar. It’s some really cool technology, and it just received a new update on Google Play that makes the app even better.

Bumpapp

The new update allows you to share more than just photo using Bump. Now, you can send any file that is stored on your device. You can send videos, documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and more goodies from your device to that of any other Bump users. For sharing files, this is about as quick as it gets.

Bump works cross-platform, so even if you have friend with an iPad or iPhone, you can use the app to send them files. Samsung offers similar features on its devices with NFC, but with Bump, you get a lot more flexibility because you are not limited to just other Samsung devices. If you have not checked out Bump yet, now might be the perfect time.

Bump also points out that it passed 112 million downloads on 12/12/12. That’s a whole lot of 12s, and an impressive amount of downloads for the app. This update should help it grow even more, as there are not many easy ways to share files that are not photos on mobile devices.

HP TouchPad gets a working camera with latest CyanogenMod builds

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 07:50 AM PST

It seems that some of the excitement has died down around running Android on the HP TouchPad tablet. But that thought aside, it looks like we are still seeing ROMs being released. And just recently, it looks like an updated CM9 and an (unofficial) CM10 build have come available for use.

IMG_0548-540x360

For those needing the breakdown, CM9 is based on Ice Cream Sandwich and CM10 is based on Jelly Bean. The nice part here, both of these builds bring something that was not previously working — support for the camera. The CM9 build is part of the official nightly series from CyanogenMod. The CM10 build comes by way of James Sullins (jcsullins) and can be found over on the RootzWiki site.

Beginning first with the CM9 nightlies, the latest build includes support for the front-facing camera as well as the microphone. In short, this latest nightly build seems to complete things in terms of hardware support. Those interested in running CM9 will be able to find the nightlies over on the Cyanogen website.

In terms of the CM10 build, this is an unofficial release. Simply put, it is not coming direct from Cyanogen. That said, this build does contain support for the camera as well as the microphone and sound. Again, similar to the CM9 nightlies, this CM10 build should round out the missing hardware support.

All said and done, those choosing to install either of these ROMs, remember, the installation process is at your own risk. But for those willing to take that risk, there is a rather nice set of directions including with the CM10 update.

Last.fm to kill its Radio features in most countries next month

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 07:14 AM PST

Things seem to be not going so well for Last.fm, and as such, it is killing off its Radio feature in most of the countries that it services. This means that users outside of the selected countries will no longer be able to use the Android app to play their favorite tunes. This also applies to using Last.fm on other platforms such as in browser or on other mobile platforms.

lastgmlogo

The countries that will remain active are the US, the UK, Germany, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and Brazil. All other countries will have Radio cut off starting on January 15, 2013. For the countries keeping the service, they will be switching to a subscription-based service, so while Radio will still exist, it will no longer be free.

While the US, the UK and Germany were accustomed to getting the service free, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and Brazil had already been paying a subscription to use Last.fm. Now, all remaining regions will have to pay, which stands to reason, since licensing fees for music are generally expensive, and we are seeing very few companies able to support it with ad revenue alone.

Paying subscribers in countries where the service is being shut off will still be able to get ad-free browsing on the Last.fm website, access to demos on the service's Playground, and "other features" that Last.fm says it is working hard to add. Realistically, people were paying for Radio, and it’s hard to imagine anyone paying for the service without that feature.

Falcon Pro for Twitter app update brings lots of fixes

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 06:55 AM PST

The Falcon Pro Twitter app left beta and made its way into Google Play a few weeks back. The app attracted near immediate attention as a contender in the ‘which Twitter app should I use’ dilema. And well, it looks like an update has since landed in Google Play and while it doesn’t contain lots of new features, it does have some notable changes.

falcon-pro

In other words, those already using Falcon Pro, fire up Google Play and grab the update. And for everyone else, if you have been searching for a solid Twitter app, now is as good a time as any to give Falcon Pro a look. First things first, this update brings the app up to version 1.3.1 and it remains available for devices running Android 2.2 or later. The app is currently priced at $0.99.

With that out of the way, lets get into the changelog. A few items were removed, a handful of items were fixed and there was one change. As for the removals, those include LED notifications, except for mentions and DMs as well as mentions from timeline view. Though, the latter was done to “solve some position holding issues” and will likely return.

Moving into the fixes and here is where things get nicer. The developer fixed Tweet Marker, the ellipsize links in some lists, the option to mute RT of muted users and the action bar will now stay hidden on tablets. As for the change, the default scale of zoomable pictures was changed. Finally, those who are using Falcon Pro and happen to be interested in what is coming, the developer has an active thread over on xda where you can vote for upcoming features.

Football Manager Handheld 2013 hits Google Play for $9.99

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 06:42 AM PST

Football Manager is the best desktop program for managing a football (soccer) club. Last year, the franchise made its way to Android for the first time, and now the franchise is back again, this time in the form of Football Manager Handheld 2013. It comes with a fairly high price tag of the $9.99, but for hardcore football fans, the amount of gameplay it offers should counteract the high cost.

footballman

The odd part about the release is the inclusion of in-app purchases, even in spite of the high cost of entry. The in-app purchases are mostly designed to help speed things along. So like real life, you can throw down a little cash and build your team a little quicker. You can get everything out of the game without throwing down an extra money, it’s more just to streamline, which makes the additional purchases easier to stomach.

Of course, there is other new stuff in the game besides the inclusion of in-app purchases. It adds additional leagues such as those of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Obviously, all the rosters have been updated, so your favorite players will be on the correct team, but by the very nature of the game, those rosters will changing as you play.

The update also improves things such as media, player photos, player comparisons and form updates. MLS is not included in the game, so American soccer fans will have to run their team from another place around the world. The new game is available now on Google Play, and it looks like a good one for the hardcore football fans out there.

Barnes & Noble NOOK HD and NOOK HD+ now available with Walmart

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 06:25 AM PST

Shopping for a Nook HD or Nook HD+ has just become a bit easier for those in the US. Well, not necessarily easier, but more convenient given the newly announced availability with Walmart. Simply put, Walmart shoppers will now be able to pick up either of these Android based tablets.

The Nook HD and HD+ availability is with all Walmart retail locations as well as online at Walmart.com. In addition to purchasing the devices, Walmart will also have a range of accessories, which will also be found online and in retail stores. The pricing will be the same as you would see direct with Barnes & Noble, that is to say, $199 for the Nook HD and $269 for the Nook HD+.

For those needing a quick recap, the Nook HD has the 7-inch display and the HD+ has the larger 9-inch display. Walmart has the Nook HD available in Smoke and the HD+ available in Slate. Additionally, those looking for a Nook, but not necessarily the tablets, Walmart also has the Simple Touch available for $79.

And if you have something against Walmart, the Nook HD and HD+ remain available direct with Barnes & Noble where you can find them online and in any of the 700 retail stores across the US. Of course, with despite your feelings about Walmart, with them having more than 4,500 locations across the US, that somehow seems like an easier destination.

6.3-inch Samsung Galaxy Note 3 rumored for 2013

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 05:42 AM PST

If the plus-sized Galaxy Note II was not big enough for you, the next iteration of the device is set to be even larger, according to sources in Korea. The Galaxy Note III looks like it could have a massive 6.3-inch display when it hits the market in 2013. If the report from the Korean Times is to be believed, it looks like Samsung is going to be pushing what we thought was the limit for the size of an OLED on a smartphone.

Other specifications on the rumored device are yet unknown, but it makes us wonder; will this device even be able to be considered a phone, or at that size is it a tablet? We’ve heard rumors that Samsung is working on a mid-range Note tablet of approximately 7 inches, so this rumor could actually be the confirmation of that, rather than a phone. Either that, or we could be getting a phone that is going to push the limits of what we can actually fit in our pockets. Maybe we need bigger pants.

These rumors also coincide with Samsung’s plans to slash its LCD production in the interest of focusing on OLED and flexible displays instead. "With money saved from LCD restructuring, the firm plans to spend more on OLED and flexible displays" one local parts supplier told the Korea Times. Samsung feels that the LCD panel market is saturated, and Samsung wants to differentiate itself with the use of OLED technology.

Samsung’s OLED push translates to other parts of its business, such as big-screen TVs. These rumors also add some weight to the rumors that Samsung is planning to announce a Galaxy S IV in February of next year. Whether or not Samsung is going to be making a giant phone or a small tablet remains to be seen, but it seems likely that a new device is coming along with the Note branding attached.

Android Community Nightly: 12/12/12

Posted: 12 Dec 2012 07:12 PM PST

Today is 12/12/12 and while I’m not too concerned about the world ending in 10 days, I do feel I need to share with everyone the Android news from today. So with that, lets just jump right into all the news that was important on this fine Wednesday evening. Again Google and Samsung rocked the news for a better part of the day, so read it all below.

We’ll start with Samsung because as usual there’s tons of news from ol Sammy. First up it appears the Note 10.1 is headed to Verizon with 4G LTE, then Samsung announced a mediocre Galaxy S II Plus — one that we’ll probably be skipping. MobileFun released a wireless charger for the Galaxy S III, Jelly Bean is headed to the Note 10.1 in Germany, then Samsung released another naughty Galaxy S III commercial. Last but not least Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is headed to Verizon’s Galaxy S III — we’re hearing it’ll start on Friday.

Next we wanted to talk about our friends at Google. For one they removed the stock images for the LG Nexus 4, but hopefully we’ll find out why soon. Google then released a Zeitgeist 2012 video showing us everything this year in the world of search. Their Nexus 7 tablet is expected to surpass 1 million sales this month, and last but not least Google’s once CEO Eric Schmidt had a few things to say. Basically saying Android is “winning the war” against Apple.

Motorola took a minute to trash the Galaxy S III, Oppo released a 5-inch beast of a smartphone, and Redbox Instant is coming later this month. Now for a few random bits to end the evening on. The YotaPhone has a 4.3-inch front AND rear display – one being e-ink — and it looks awesome. Both Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Modern Combat 4 arrived in the Play Store, oh and Google Now was easily ported to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Enjoy the rest of this 12/12/12 for those that think its neat, and we’ll see you tomorrow!
