Enigmatic LG device spied in wild again

A new photo of an unknown LG smartphone has been leaked online courtesy of @evleaks, showing an ultra-thin bezel. Images arrived late last week for the handset however the specs remain a mystery.  It remains unclear which model we’re looking at here but the most likely candidate is the LG Optimus G2. Of course, it also bears a resemblance to the Nexus 4 as well; LG and Google are reportedly working on the successor.

PUK – Pool with pucks and no side pockets

Posted: 10 May 2013 10:45 AM PDT

I do not have a great description for this game, and the title was alliteration for alliteration’s sake, but I can tell you that PUK is an addicting pick-up-and-play game.  And those are the best kinds of mobile games. 2013-05-06 00.34.18

PUK bills itself as an action puzzler, but I do not think that is quite right.  It is like air hockey, skeeball, and pool mixed into one absorbing game.  It is an amalgamation of gameplay types; a hockey puck that you fling at portals to remove them from the screen so that you can advance to the next level. Except, there are no levels really.

PUK levels are randomly generated, and you cannot save your progress or return to a previously played level.  Each play through is unique, fast paced, and difficult – and you will likely not see it again for a long time.  Since each level is randomly generated, I do not see the need to go back to one specific level, but many reviewers on the Play store are clamoring for progression saving.

The gameplay of PUK is marvelously simple.  You have a set number of pucks (from one to six or seven) at the bottom of your screen.  With your finger, you slide the pucks down to choose at what angle and with what speed at which you want to launch them towards the portals above.

The game turns nasty after a few easy warm-up levels.  From a faster timer (have I mentioned that yet?) to barriers trying to keep your pucks from reaching the portals, PUK ceaselessly adds difficulty to your puck-flinging journey. There is only one inconvenience, and it is a little specific to certain devices, but on my Galaxy Note 2, when I pull a puck down to fling it, I hit the capacitative back button more often than I would like.  It merely pauses the game, which may be beneficial, but it can also throw off your rhythm and timing.  There are also some vagueries too like why do you get medals (new completed levels I assume since there 1,000 of both) and when the timer bar expires (it is difficult at first glance to see when it will expire).

PUK is a great mobile game.  You can play it for short spurts to try to get a few medals, or you can play for an hour trying to beat your high score.  I think the developers could add some settings to mix things up like colors, a progression saving option, and a more-helpful guide, but these are minor details for an addicting, fast-paced game.  PUK is simple, quick, and addictive – the trifecta for mobile games.Click to view slideshow.

What we liked

  • Simplistic, but difficult gameplay.
  • Nice atmosphere.
  • Infinitely mobile.

What could be improved

  • Saved progress.
  • A way to disable capictative buttons.

Leaked benchmarks for the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 released

Posted: 10 May 2013 09:48 AM PDT

It looks like all the rumors are coming together, as benchmarks have been released for an upcoming 8-inch Samsung tablet thanks to the Dutch website TechTastic. Sources at the site say they have discovered the 8-inch tablet in the GLBenchmark database, carrying model number SM-T311 (which we presume is the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0.)

As we have reported before, rumors told us that the upcoming device will feature an 3-megapixel camera on the back with a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, and weigh just slightly more than the 7.9in i-Pad Mini. Now thanks to the leaked details, it can also be said that the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 is equipped with an 8-inch WXVGA (1280 x 800) display. The tablet is powered by a dual-core 1.5Ghz Exynos 4412 processor, 2GB RAM, a 4500mAh battery, and an ARM Mali-400 GPU. On top of all that, we can also confirm that it runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and includes Samsungs unique TouchWiz interface.

No information on release date or pricing just yet, however we do expect Samsung will announce the new Galaxy Tab 3 model shortly.

Google will introduce the much-rumored unified messaging client, Babel, at Google I/O next week, reports TechRadar. Picking up the more formal, and familiar, name of Google Hangouts, this is the messaging service that is expected to be cross-platform and tie together a number of existing products. No new details were given in regards to Hangouts/Babel; however, Google reportedly emailed the team yesterday thanking them for their work on the project.

Android now powers almost 60% of mobile devices – about 3 times the amount of iOS devices

Posted: 10 May 2013 07:19 AM PDT

During the first quarter of 2013, Android continued to surge forward. Google’s mobile platform powered an impressive 59.9% of all “smart” mobile devices sold, with a total shipment level of 308.7 million units. in comparison, Apple’s iOS powered only 19.3% of devices sold – 3 times less than Android.

According to Canalys, the information source, directly following the two mobile giants was Microsoft, with 18.1% of devices powered by Windows and windows Phone.

According to Canalys, the reason for Apple’s decline in totals is partially due to their aging iOS platform. "Despite its slowing growth, Apple still shipped over 37 million iPhones," said Pete Cunningham, Canalys Principal Analyst. "But HTC and Samsung have raised the bar with their latest handsets and Apple needs to respond with its next iPhone. The iPhone user interface is now six years old and badly in need of a refresh."
