For those of you longing to bring the Google Now wallpapers to any homescreen, developer Bongoman has created a live wallpaper app that allows you to do just that. While it is technically a live wallpaper, the only time it changes is when switching from day to night, which means virtually no battery drain. The app allows you to flip through Google Now-esque cards and then simply tap to apply the desired wallpaper. All the locations included in Google Now are here and there’s even a separate app for those of you with an HD display. Both versions of Google Now Wallpapers are available from the Play Store free of charge. Hit the break for a slideshow and Play Store links.

New HTC One commercials put BlinkFeed feature front and center

Posted: 10 May 2013 03:51 PM PDT

HTC_One_Commercial_Blinkfeed

HTC, always coming up with clever ways to market their product, released two new commercials for the HTC One today. Unlike previous commercials, these put the BlinkFeed feature of HTC’s newest flagship device front and center. For those who don’t know, BlinkFeed (introduced in Sense 5) is integrated into the One’s homescreen and combines various social media services and news sites into one customizable, image-centric feed. The idea is that by utilizing BlinkFeed, users don’t have to “dig like gophers” to find status updates and news articles. Hit the break both commercials.

Angry-Birds-Seasons-portal-update1

The latest update for Angry Birds Seasons will be available next week and will be called Abra-Ca-Bacon, Rovio announced today. The game will feature 30 new levels for players to conquer, as well as six additional levels that will be unlockable as players progress through the game. The biggest change with Abra-Ca-Bacon will be the introduction of a new gameplay mechanic called Portals. Just as the name suggests, Portals are secret entrances that can suck objects in at one end, and spit them out at the other end. The Portals aren’t just limited to your Angry Birds, as they can also propel Bad Piggies, blocks and other environmental objects.

The update will be available for download on May 16. You can see the portals in action in Rovio’s promo trailer after the break.

Google cancels plans to unveil Google Wallet credit card at next week’s I/O

All Things D is reporting that Google has decided not to move forward with their own physical credit card. According to their sources, Google had planned to update Google Wallet with a physical card next week at Google I/O, but now sources are saying that those plans have changed a little and even though they do plan to update Google Wallet with new features, there are no plans for the debut of a Google credit card along with it.

Sources close to the matter said Google’s CEO Larry Page put an end to the project last week after a lackluster demo performance didn’t show any innovation. Those who had seen the card described it as a usual credit card, with the Google Wallet “W” in rainbow colors on top of a black background.  Google had hoped to use the credit card to gain more information about its customers spending habits, which would improve their ability to push ads to their customers.

This isn’t the first time Google has lost faith in a card. Back in October of last year they put the kibosh on the prepaid Google Wallet program.  So this is just one more thing to delete from Google I/O expectations.

Congratulations Samsung— the Galaxy S 4 is set to be featured on BBC’s Watchdog

There have more more than a few of us who have complained about Samsung’s habit of loading up crap unnecessary extra apps on its flagship devices, but it looks like the BBC has had enough of Sammy’s shenanigans. The famed British network will air a special episode of its Watchdog series pointing out some very serious issues that identified on the 16GB variant of the Galaxy S 4 smartphone. In fact, Host Anne Robinson poses this simple question best: “Samsung… claims that its brand new Galaxy phone has an extra-large memory, but what did it forget to mention“? Well– while the smartphone no doubt introduces some well… “unique” apps, much of the apps take up an extraordinary space on the device, resulting in roughly only half of the total storage capacity being available to brand-new owners.

Naturally, Samsung will probably want to rebuke the bold Watchdog claim by highlighting its 16GB Galaxy S 4 certainly has a microSD slot for users to take advantage of, but remember— regular apps can only be installed onto the phone’s internal memory, so there is the potential for owners to simply run out of room. Moreover, owners can always buy the larger capacity variants of the device as well because well— bigger is better anyways.

How to make a Drama Shot or Sequence Shot on the HTC One

Posted: 10 May 2013 10:09 AM PDT

HTC_One_Sequence_Shot_Just_Like_Drama_Shot

So you own an HTC One and you’re a tad jealous of the Drama Shot feature on the Galaxy S 4. No worries because you can do the same thing on your HTC One by utilizing the Sequence Shot feature, but there is some good news and bad news. The good news is that as long as you’re using Zoe, you can make your Sequence Shot anytime you want. With the Galaxy S 4, you have to know that you want to take a Drama Shot before you take the photo. Not only that, you need to make your edits before you can take any other pictures. The results are cool, but a very cumbersome feature. With HTC’s use of Zoe, you can play around with your sequence shot after you get home or even weeks later as long as the Zoe is still on your phone. Now the bad news: You won’t get as many frames as the Galaxy S 4 since the S 4 takes 100 frames over four seconds, while HTC Zoe grabs only 20 frames for 3 seconds. Still, you can get a pretty good looking Drama Shot Sequence Shot, so hit the break to find out how it’s done.

All you need to do is open any Zoe that might feature images for a good Sequence Shot such as someone running or dancing. You want to make sure that the only thing moving is the person that you want to depict for this effect. Make sure to move the slider on the Zoe to after the last movement takes place. Then tap Edit, then Retouch, then Sequence Shot (lower left). After it processes, you will see a bunch of images that you can select or deselect. Obviously the ones that are selected will appear in the final photo. After you are happy with the result, tap Done. At this point you will be given an opportunity for further editing like skin smoothing and eye brightening, but most of those won’t pertain. Now hit the three dot menu at the top right and select Save or Save & Share. Tapping Save will save the image to your gallery and will also be part of the same event that your original Zoe is in. If you tap Save & Share, it will save the image the same way, but you will also be given an opportunity to share it to Facebook, Dropbox, Gmail, Google+, and more.

Sometimes it’s easier to see how it’s done so that is why I put together this video showing you.

Update: Thanks to Chaz Edwards, you can also do this utilizing burst shots. Just take a bunch of burst shots, but don’t delete any. Then open them from your gallery and the instructions above will be the same. Select Edit, then Retouch, then Sequence Shot. Make your selections and save the image. Here’s a video showing you how it’s done.

Sequence Shot might be HTC’s best kept secret regarding their camera software and is something that most people don’t know they can do. Hopefully this guide helped you make a really cool sequence image. Be sure to check out our other HTC One guides.

Facebook Home support appears for Samsung Galaxy S 4, HTC One, Sony Xperia ZL

Posted: 10 May 2013 09:29 AM PDT

Facebook_Home

If you recently got your hands on one of the latest and greatest smartphones to hit the market, like the Samsung Galaxy S 4 or the HTC One, you were probably wondering how great it would be to slap the Facebook Home launcher on it. Not really, but it does seem Facebook is hoping owners of those devices might give their Home launcher a try despite the generally poor reception it has received since hitting the market. Although the Facebook Home app still shows its last update as being April 22, 2013, some users have discovered a new screen popping up on their devices asking if they would like to “Use Home Anyway” when they hit the unsupported device screen when launching the app. This appears to be true on both the Galaxy S 4 and the Sony Xperia ZL. Meanwhile, owners of the HTC One don’t even get the unsupported device screen, instead going straight into the launcher.

The changes appear to have surfaced after Facebook held a press conference to announce an update to the main Facebook app and to claim they have 1 million Facebook Home installations. They did not reveal how many of those installations were used for about five minutes before being shut down. The Facebook app supposedly adds a new persistent notification. The changelog in the Google Play Store lists the ability to send stickers, deletion of unwanted comments on your posts, and the ability to get directions, check in or call businesses when on a Facebook Page.

You can use the download links below to access both the Facebook Home launcher or the Facebook app if you want to grab the update.

Google prepping an Androidbook, smartwatch, and ‘over-the-top’ TV box, but neither will appear at Google I/O

Posted: 10 May 2013 07:42 AM PDT

Android_Bugdroid_On_TV

Earlier we told you what the specs are going to be for the updated Nexus 7 according to KGI securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Ironically, Kuo has a very good track record when it comes to predicting Apple products. Other than revealing the Nexus 7 specs he said that Google will be coming out with an Androidbook laptop, and “over-the-top” TV box, and a smartwatch, but unfortunately we won’t see them next week at Google I/O since they are only in the planning stages.

We have already heard rumors about an Androidbook and a smartwatch so this isn’t surprising, but it’s further confirmation. As far as a TV box, this is something I, and a lot of our readers, have been hoping for. Google TV has been a huge disappointment, and I am still trying to figure out why they bothered with the Nexus Q. A TV box is desperately needed, and I can only wish that it would debut next week at Google I/O, but it appears that won’t be the case.
