Motorola, now Holo-themed!

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 10:53 AM PDT

It looks as though Google is making some much needed changes to the Motorola logo, bringing their Holo colors to surround the Original “M” symbol and updating the font and case of the company name. The now all lower-case will be followed by the new tag-line “a Google company.”

I’m not a huge fan of Motorola hardware, but this new logo is attractive and I hope that it’s indicative of a revamped design style for their hardware.

What do you guys think? Could this be in preparation for the release of the fabled XFON?

Rumor: Verizon to launch Droid RAZR Ultra and RAZR M Ultra from Motorola

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 10:43 AM PDT

Just a little while ago, we saw a leaked shot of an Android smartphone by Motorola, which is probably the Motorola X Phone, but still it is not 100% confirmed. Now @evleaks on Twitter tweeted that “Coming to Verizon: Droid RAZR Ultra, RAZR M Ultra, from Motorola“. This is the first time we have heard about these new Droids, and @evleaks is one of the most legit sources around. They have made such rumored statements in past as well, and they turned out to be true.

UntitledMaybe, the Droid RAZR Ultra is the name of Motorola X for Verizon Wireless, but of course I can be wrong as well. Anyway, that’s what we have for now. Tell us what do you think about it in the comment box below.

Is the mysterious XT1056 really the Motorola X?

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 07:02 AM PDT

Rumors have been flying about the rumored Motorola X, and as the possible August unveiling is fast approaching, we have a little more information on this mysterious device.

So far, we know that it will have an estimated 4.7-inche 720p display, a 1.7 GHz Snapdragon chipset, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, will run Android 4.2.2 and include a removable battery. The obvious focus will be on the accompanying features rather than the hardware. To add to all of that, the gang at Phone Arena recently received a picture (see below) of a Motorola XT1056 device being tested on Sprint’s 4G LTE network, and we are thinking it may be the mysterious Motorola X phone (a slight Sprint variant of the AT&T’s XFON that sports “5G” Wi-Fi and NFC.)

motorola x

Of course this mystery XT1056 device could be some sort of other Motorola unit that's in the works, but we'll go ahead and speculate that we're probably looking at the X phone. Keep checking back between now and August for any other rumored details!

Minuum “The little keyboard for big fingers”

Posted: 25 Jun 2013 10:05 PM PDT

In March 2013 the Minuum team began a campaign on Indigogo.com garnering such interest in their project that just 4 months later they’ve raised almost 900% of their $10,000 goal and delivered a nicely polished beta to their supporters.

Let me preface this review by saying that I am a hardcore Swype user, I have been hooked since it was in closed beta. Having said that, I was very interested in seeing the progression of the Minuum project, more because of the prospect of alternative keyboards (typing on a piece of paper, with a ring, on your skin, etc…) than the touch-screen keyboard itself. This project as a whole could revolutionize text input for wearable technology, which would be great news for those of us who don’t wish to use voice to interact with our devices.

The first features you’ll want to take a look at after installing are, “Import Android dictionary” and “Import contacts”

minuum1After that, mess around with the heights of different aspects of the keyboard, which in the image below, I have set the lowest options.

minuum2

After which you’ll want to hit your normal keyboard set-up options, I recommend enabling the space-bar as swiping right to space seems to slow me down. But check it out and see which way you like it.

minuum3Let me say, it may take some time to let go of the need to try to be precise. I’ve found, the more precisely I try to type, the less accurate the results. There is some very good text prediction software embedded into this keyboard. I try not to pay attention to what word is appearing while I’m typing because it can be confusing, however if you look up and realize one of the words is off, just touch it and the top bar will be populated with a scrolling list of other options you may possibly have meant.

To add words to the dictionary you simply tap them in, pausing on each letter for long enough for the pop-up to tell you which letter you’ve selected and then touch the word in the suggestion bar to confirm. If you accidentally add a word, or decide you want to remove a word for any reason, just long-press it in the suggestion bar and a prompt will appear to remove it.

There are two ways to type numbers, you can drag up from the key above which the number resides and use the pop-up to select the desired number. Or you can swipe down on the keyboard to switch to the linear num-pad which seems to be spaced out pretty well. I’ve had a lot of success typing long numbers quickly.

Lastly we have the gestures, swipe left to right to insert a space without a space-bar, a swipe left and up inserts a line-break, swipe right to left is a backspace and left and up brings up settings. (I haven’t used these very much.)

minuum4

All-in-all, if you’re a fan of tapping to enter text rather than swiping, and you can force yourself not to care about precision then you will LOVE Minuum. I do like having this much screen real-estate and it is going to be a hard decision whether I’ll turn back to Swype after the review is finished. Although I must say that password entry can be much harder than any traditional QWERTY keyboard.

My judgement is, if they incorporate a Swype-style feature, it would be my keyboard of choice, hands down. I highly recommend everyone give it a try.

Anyone using it? Anyone excited to try it out? Sound off in the comments below!

Secure messaging to come to CyanogenMod?

Posted: 25 Jun 2013 07:55 PM PDT

Koushik Dutta recently shared of Google+ the possibility of a secure push messaging service which will encrypt messages sent between CyanogenMod users from end-to-end. Design inspired by iMessaging and ignited by recent security concerns. If the quote I’m about to paste isn’t good enough, check out the original post here

Secure/push messages in +CyanogenMod

We’ve been focusing on data security lately; +Steve Kondik got the ball rolling with Privacy Guard. And obviously, recent events have made privacy concerns a global discussion.

The Privacy Guard contribution is the philosophy I like to  to see in these types of data security implementations: seamless protection of the user data. If it’s a pain to use, or if it breaks third party apps, it’s going to be a negative experience, and we’re doing it wrong.

One of the interesting developments of the past couple weeks is that iMessage, is not snoopable by a third party, not even Apple (or so they would have you believe ;) .

Regardless of whether that is true; I love the design philosophy of iMessage: it works transparently, and encrypts the user’s message between iOS users and fails over to SMS as needed. Frictionless.

I’d thrown a poll out there, to see what sort of cohesiveness +CyanogenMod  users have. Surprisingly high. Many +CyanogenMod  text a lot with other+CyanogenMod users.
https://www.evernote.com/shard/s63/sh/94c9d731-6540-430e-b401-c212f14428d7/fae4c3c7a114a957547a2d77c19e3323
(Which makes sense, as our growth to 7M users is entirely organic and word of mouth)

Anyways, TL;DR. I’ve built out a secure/push based messaging plugin for CyanogenMod. Messages between two CyanogenMod will be encrypted end to end and sent over GCM. It’s built into the framework; so it works transparently, even with third party apps. (This is actually one of the cooler points IMO, and I do a lot of testing with GoSMS, etc)

It’s basically PGP (encryption + authenticity) for text messages, built into the system.

There are two minor changes to the telephony and framework to support this:

Add Middleware hooks to IccSmsInterfaceManagerProxy. This allows a sent SMS message to be intercepted and rewritten or sent over another transport.
http://review.cyanogenmod.org/44464

Add other various framework support bits (new permissions). Grant system apps priority in case of ordered broadcast priority tie.
http://review.cyanogenmod.org/44545

Here’s the source for the app/plugin, which is still under heavy development.
https://github.com/koush/PushSms

At this point, I’m looking to get some feedback, discussion, thoughts, etc on this project. Not ready for active testing yet.

I, for one, am very excited to see this come to fruition.

What do you guys think? Let us know in the comments below!

Samsung Galaxy S4 Developer Edition available for Verizon at $649

Posted: 25 Jun 2013 03:10 PM PDT

Back in May, we told you that developer edition of the Samsung Galaxy S4 is headed towards AT&T and Verizon, and we might see it soon. And guess who won the race? Samsung officially unveiled the developer edition of the famous smartphone for Verizon, and it is available for $649 directly through Samsung’s online store. Everything under the hood is just like the original version, it just comes with unlocked bootloader and no bloatware.

GS4_Verizon_Black_400x400_large1_clSamsung has a special love for developers, hence a special device just for the developers. Carriers probably have something against no bloatware and a fully unlocked bootloader, like the AT&T and Verizon Galaxy S4 can be unlocked and turned into a developer phone, but the carriers just don’t approve it. Although, there’s a way to do it, and that is hacking, but that is dangerous and will definitely void your warranty. We are not encouraging you to do it, only just telling you about the options. So if you are not a hacking type person yet looking forward to a developer edition of Galaxy S4, then here it is!

Are you planning to grab the Galaxy S4 Developer Edition, or is it just too heavy on the pocket? Tell us about it in the comment box below.

HP introduces Slate 21 all-in-one Android desktop

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 05:01 PM PDT

The last time we saw something ‘Android’ from HP, it was back in May when they officially unveiled the HP SlateBook x2, a dual-OS device running on Windows 8 and Android. Now HP is back again, and this time, it is just Android. HP introduces their first ever Android powered all-in-one Android desktop, known as the Slate 21.

originalIt is running on the latest version of Android, with a Tegra 4 processor and a 1080p IPS display. It is priced at $399, and I guess it is amazingly priced and it will make a great, affordable desktop at any home. Although, it does not come with built-in battery, so you cannot carry it around, but who wants to carry around a 21 inch Android tablet? Anyone?

Android desktops are becoming a new trend nowadays. First, ViewSonic introduced the Android display and then recently we saw a beautiful all-in-one from Acer, so it can be said that we might see more all-in-one Android desktops in future.

Samsung announces pricing and availability for three new Galaxy Tab models

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 12:13 PM PDT

samsung-logoSamsung is rolling right along as they continue to provide a growing list of various devices to users, and today they have announced pricing for three devices that are being launched under the Galaxy Tab brand. Sammy released photos and specs of the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0, 8.0, and 10.1 earlier this month, and the three devices are now one step closer to hitting the store shelves. So let’s skip the red tape and get right down to those numbers, shall we?

samsung_galaxy_tab3_7From smallest to largest, the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 will be available for $200. Keep in mind that the Tab 3 7.0 comes with 8GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot, so Samsung is clearly using the expandable memory option to offer devices at lower prices. It’s also packing a 1024 x 600 7-inch display, a dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz, and Android 4.1.

GALAXY Tab 3 8-inch (1)Moving right along, the Galaxy Tab 8.0 will run $300 with 16GB of internal storage. This slightly larger tablet is bringing an 8-inch, 1280 x 800 resolution display, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, and 1.5GB of RAM.

GALAXY Tab 3 10.1-inch (4)Finally, the Tab 3 10.1, arguably the best of the three new devices, will hit the U.S. market starting at $400, which we’re assuming will be for the 16GB model. There’s also word that the 10.1 will be offered in 16GB and 32GB versions, the latter obviously being priced a bit higher. At any rate, the Tab 3 10.1 boasts a 10.1-inch, 1280 x 800 display, a 5MP rear camera, 1GB of RAM, and a 1.6GHz dual-core chip.

All three Galaxy Tab 3 devices will launch on July 7th at retail locations including Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Amazon, and more. For those of you who want to have one ready for pickup on launch day, pre-orders open tomorrow. The full press release can be found below.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Portfolio Offers Consumers New Variety and Personalized Experiences for Staying Connected

As consumer tablet usage swells, new consumer research shows demand for more choice and Samsung's new 7", 8", and 10.1" tablets deliver

RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J. – June 24, 2013 – Samsung Electronics America, Inc. today debuted three new tablets as part of the Galaxy Tab 3 family, allowing consumers to choose which tablet suits them best. The 7 inch, 8 inch and 10.1 inch Galaxy tablets offer a range of screen sizes and a suite of experiences built for a broader set of individual and family preferences, making this lineup of tablets ideal for both home and on-the-go uses. The Wi-Fi-enabled Galaxy Tab 3 portfolio will be available in three form factors: Galaxy Tab 3 7.0, Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 and Galaxy Tab 3 10.1., and will be available in the U.S. beginning July 7, with pre-orders starting tomorrow.

"Samsung's industry-leading smartphones, Note devices and tablets address consumers' diverse demands and personal preferences," said Nanda Ramachandran, vice president of emerging business at Samsung Telecommunications America. "The Galaxy Tab 3 portfolio offers consumers more options for tablets that serve as their ultimate smartphone companion, the center of home and on-the-go use, and mobile devices packed with content and services."

New consumer data* from Forrester Research validates that tablets are quickly becoming a central mobile device for consumers. Specifically, 49 percent of U.S. consumers who own both a mobile phone and tablet prefer the tablet as their primary device to go online. Data from the same Forrester survey further indicates that across 25 types of tablet applications there is no single dominant use of tablets by users. The typical user is more well-defined by their lack of uniformity as evidenced by the fact that they engage in a widely varied mix of five to six different application types in a given month. Only games top the 50 percent threshold for all tablet users – so it is obvious that each consumer is looking for a customized device that fits their personal needs on functionality in addition to size, price, power and connectivity. Whether reading an e-book, engaging on social networks, or allowing the kids to play games, the Galaxy Tab 3 portfolio has something for everyone.

"In addition to providing consumers greater variety in terms of size, form factor, price points and experiences, the Galaxy Tab 3 portfolio will be widely available for purchase from a multitude of retail channels further reinforcing Samsung's commitment to delivering personal choice to all," said Travis Merrill, vice president of tablet marketing at Samsung Electronics America.

Familiar Galaxy Experience

The Galaxy Tab 3 portfolio blends the familiar Galaxy family feel in sleek and slim designs with compelling content and services that consumers will want to use in their everyday lives. Created to be the perfect companion to the Galaxy line of smartphones, the Galaxy Tab 3 devices give consumers a seamless transition of content and services between their various Galaxy products. Similar to the Galaxy Note 8.0 and Galaxy smartphones, physical home and capacitive buttons are included.

Home Entertainment Hub

The Galaxy Tab 3 has various form factors and light-weight builds, which quickly and easily transition into the center of the home. Research shows that 85% of tablet users watch TV while using their tablet, with 41% of them doing this daily.** For this consumer, each Galaxy Tab 3 portfolio device's built-in IR blaster turns the tablets into a universal remote and can activate Samsung's innovative WatchONTM service. This service recommends TV shows and on-demand content, enabling the tablets to function as the hub of the living room and king of second screen consumption.

Packed with Content

This newest portfolio also makes discovering, accessing and sharing new content, including over 750,000 apps, from the Google Play and Samsung Apps stores even simpler. The Galaxy Tab 3 makes it convenient to stay connected on-the-go, balancing any number of tasks, such as emailing, managing your schedule, social networking, online shopping, reading, playing games and streaming content.

In addition, each of the devices in the Galaxy Tab 3 portfolio will come with a bevy of content value through pre-loaded content and Galaxy Perks available at www.samsung.com/us/galaxyperks. Specifically, hundreds of dollars' worth of content, including a $10 voucher for the purchase of applications, books, movies and music in Google Play; one year of free Boingo hotspot service; three months free Hulu Plus service; two years free DropBox Service with 50GB storage space; and more.

The Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 is aimed at consumers who are in the market to purchase a portable tablet with all the features and reliability they need to stay connected throughout their daily activities. Built for portability, the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 allows users to consume and manage content on-the-go. It is compact enough to easily slide into handbags or a jacket pocket so that consumers on-the-go will appreciate its compact size and lightweight design.

Image sharing and browsing just got a whole lot better.. or at least a whole lot more mobile. Imgur, the popular image hosting and sharing service that Redditors and Facebook users love to use, has released an official app for Android. Available in the Google Play Store, the free app provides a simple way for anyone and everyone to view, upload, comment, and share images and galleries. The full press release can be found below. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be looking at puppies in /r/aww.

ERMAHGERD: IMGUR OFFICIALLY GOES MOBILE

Endless entertainment on the go with new Imgur app

JUNE 24, 2013—SAN FRANCISCO—Imgur, the fastest growing image sharing platform on the web, today introduces its first official mobile app. Until now, Imgurians have used their mobile site or unofficial third-party apps built using the Imgur API. The new app delivers the complete Imgur experience, maintaining a clean user interface with access to the entire feature set. Available first for Android devices, the new Imgur app makes it easy to view, upload, share, comment, and engage with all of Imgur's entertaining images on the go.

People continue to migrate from traditional entertainment media like TV, and shift attention from social networks like Facebook to outlets that let them consume and share content in new ways, without tying everything they do back to a profile that features and promotes it forever. This trend lines up nicely for the natural evolution of the Imgur experience, which has been moving toward image sharing as a form of entertainment, more like a YouTube for images.

To that end, discovering and consuming cool content is a core focus for both the site and for the new app. The user experience is all about finding the newest, most interesting "viral" images, engaging with them, and sharing them with friends. The dynamic nature of the content inspires users to engage frequently, in many cases on a daily basis. Imgur also promises new features in the coming months to aid content creation, and enhance personalization and discovery.

"We're really excited to bring Imgurians a mobile tool that makes their Imgur experience better," said Alan Schaaf, founder and CEO, Imgur. "We've seen mobile usage double annually, up from about 7% in January 2011 to 30% at the beginning of this year. The decision to build and release our own app was due to a substantial increase in mobile browser usage over time. We're trying to develop a closer, more intimate relationship with our users and we think people's phones are the best way to reach out and do that."

As expected from the Simple Image Sharer, users will see an intense focus on simplicity and usability in the new mobile experience.

TL; DR Imgur finally released an Android app!
