New Google Play Edition devices have a new camera app, drawer, and wallpaper

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 12:40 PM PDT

google_edition_one_s4The new HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S 4 with stock Android have been released, and with their version of Android 4.2.2 comes a few unique touches to the UI. The camera app, which was rumored to get an update in 4.3, has a new stacked menu system for easier navigation. Another big change is that the app drawer has been switched from a 4×4 layout to a 4×5 layout to take advantage of the different screen sizes of the One and S4.

Other minor changes are the addition of a new red Phase Beam wallpaper to add to the purple and blue versions, and a new custom boot animation. The lockscreen clock on the S4 is a little different from Nexus devices, probably so that the phone correctly works with Samsung’s S-View flip covers.

Verizon to launch Motorola Droid RAZR Ultra and RAZR M Ultra, according to rumor

I guess the RAZR line will live on. On the same day that a new Motorola logo was revealed that touts the company as “a Google company,” Twitter account @evleaks, which has proven to be pretty reliable in the past, has sent out a tweet saying "Coming to Verizon: Droid RAZR Ultra, RAZR M Ultra, from Motorola". This is the first time we’ve heard about these devices, so there isn’t much to report past their names.

Could one of these names become the official name for the Motorola X? Who knows. We’ll let you know as we hear more about these devices.

NVIDIA Shield now delayed until July due to a ‘mechanical issue that relates to a third party component’

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 12:19 PM PDT

project-shield-overview

It was just last week that NVIDIA reduced the price of the Shield to $299 and set tomorrow as the release date. Unfortunately it didn’t pass the final quality test as a “mechanical issue that relates to a third party component” was revealed.

"During our final QA process, we discovered a mechanical issue that relates to a 3rd party component.  We want every SHIELD to be perfect, so we have elected to shift the launch date to July.  We'll update you as soon as we have an exact date."

For now, it’s delayed until July, but no exact date was given. NVIDIA is working around the clock with the supplier to rectify the situation. I know this is bad news for some of you, but give credit to NVIDIA for making this move now. It certainly shows they are committed to releasing a product that meets the highest possible standards. We will update you as soon as a new date is announced.

Symantec’s Norton security line is one of the most trusted names in tech security. Today, they have released a new version of their North Mobile Security app with a plethora of new features. The biggest change is the addition of Norton Mobile Insight, which takes advantage of Symantec’s database of four million malware-checked Android apps. With the update, once a user downloads a new app, if Norton has it in their database, they will send the user information about the security and privacy risks for that app.

Norton Mobile Norton has also added Google Chrome web protection support and enhanced anti-theft capabilitie as part of this update. You can download version 3.5 from the Play Store link after the break.

Motorola Mobility has a new, colorful logo

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 10:18 AM PDT

With Motorola Mobility apparently on the path to releasing the Motorola X phone sometime this year, the company appears to have decided now is the time to reveal a new logo. The company has kept the unique “M” badge as part of the logo. The image above shows a circle of colors around the “M” badge. This appears to represent the possible colors that can be used to surround the badge. Hit the break and you can see an example of the logo in the purple color as used on the Techweek web site. The new logo also includes the Motorola name beneath the graphic portion, but the typeface has been modified to a lowercase, thinner font. Text indicating Motorola is “a Google company” is also included. The new logo was discovered on the web site for Techweek, a technology conference site. The next scheduled event is the Chicago conference on June 27th – 29th.

Boomerang Gmail client released for Android

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 09:55 AM PDT

boomerang_gmail_client_banner

Even though Google just released a major refresh for their Gmail service, including a new app for Android devices, other companies continue work on their own spin on building a better way to access and manage your email. The latest effort comes from the team that built Boomerang with the release of their Android app to complement the browser plugin they created for desktop web interfaces. On the desktop, Boomerang plugs-in to a user’s Gmail account and can be used to schedule emails to be sent at a later time or to remind a user that a response is due. The Boomerang for Android app handles those chores and throws in a few features that may entice some users to switch from the default Gmail client on their smartphones.

The scheduling features included in Boomerang will let users do things like snooze an email so it will show up later as a new message, schedule emails to be sent later, and track responses. The Boomerang team added a nice touch to the interface though. With the normal Gmail client, users can swipe a message in the list to send it to the archive. The Boomerang client includes that functionality with a left to right swipe. However, swiping in the opposite direction brings up several other options like deleting, tagging, scheduling (boomerang), or starring a message as a favorite.

Boomerang includes other features one would expect from a mail client on a smartphone, like the ability to search messages, integration with contacts for auto-complete purposes, multi-account support, signatures, and support for attachments. Boomerang also supports Gmails quick reply function. If you really like the client, one of the biggest shortcomings may be the fact that it only works with Gmail accounts. Push notifications are missing from the app as well as the ability to view and edit drafts, though the team behind the app promises they are working on this features.

If you want to give Boomerang a try, hit one of the download links below, beneath the image gallery and the demo video. Speaking of the demo video, you may want to check it out – a little bit on the corny side, but a welcome change of pace from most demo videos.

CyanogenMod developer starts work on Secure Device-to-Device Messaging

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 07:58 AM PDT

Cyanogenmod

While it is rare for Android users to envy anything related to iOS, CyanogenMod developer Koush openly expressed his love for iMessage in a Google+ post, also revealing that he plans to build a plugin somewhat similar into future builds of CyanogenMod. The plugin will be built into the framework, working with any SMS app to send encrypted messages to compatible devices running CyanogenMod (7 million users and counting) and falling back to standard SMS when necessary.

Not much else is known about this feature but its another step in the right direction for the CM team, who’ve been hard at working making their ROM more and more secure. For now we can only ponder possible features of this plugin, but Koush is looking for feedback so hit the source to let him know what you want to see.
