Nexus 10 expected from Samsung in the "near future"
Jul 25th 2013, 14:57, by Robert Nelson

Google talked about Android 4.3 and the Chromecast dongle yesterday (as well as several other smaller items), however when it came to tablets the talk was about the Nexus 7. Of course, that is only one of the two tablets currently available by way of the Google Play Store. That other is the Nexus 10 and the lack of a mention yesterday seems to have caused some to worry about the future of the 10-inch device.

Arriving as a bit of good news for those who may have been worried, Google’s Sundar Pichai has confirmed that a new Nexus 10 is in the works. The details are on the light side and are coming by way of the Twitter account of WSJ reporter Amir Efrati. That tweet simply mentioned that a new 10-inch Nexus 10 was coming from Samsung.

It was also said the tablet will be arriving in the “near future.” But as we often see — the definition of near future can vary widely from person to person. That being the case, those who happen to be fans of the 10-inch form factor can at least take comfort in knowing a refresh is in the works. Quite possibly we can hope for an announcement in the fall.

As to what we can expect to see remains uncertain though. Based on what we saw with the Nexus 7 and one could speculate improvements in terms of the processor and display. The current Nexus 10 is sporting a display resolution of 2560 x 1600 and remains available for $399 (16GB) or $499 (32GB) from the Google Play Store. And while we aren’t sure we would suggest making a purchase now, the tablet remains a solid device — and happens to be one that we reviewed back when it was originally released.

New Nexus 7 pre-orders arrive in the UK
Jul 25th 2013, 14:19, by Robert Nelson

Google unveiled the new Nexus 7 during their ‘breakfast’ event yesterday and while they were pretty forthcoming with details of a US release, there wasn’t much said for those in the UK. With that in mind, it looks like some UK-based retailers have begun listing the tablet for pre-order. There are a few listings available at this time, however while the pricing appears consistent the same cannot be said for the shipping dates.

Anyway, so far listings have turned up with Ebuyer, Currys and PC World. The price appears set at £199.99 for the 16GB model and £239.99 for the 32GB model. The first of those three retailers is showing an availability date of August 29th, however the latter two have it listed as being September 13th. That being said, while the price seems set it looks like we still need the official word from Google on when the Nexus 7 will begin shipping in the UK market.

Another UK retailer that is often on the forefront of device announcements has yet to say anything in detail. That retailer is Clove and so far they have only said that “UK pricing is yet to be revealed but should be available soon.” Of course, regardless of which of these dates hold true — one thing that is certain is about how the UK market has a month or a month and a half wait as compared to the US market.

So far there hasn’t been any mention of the LTE model heading to the UK. Then again, with little release details for that model in the US still, that comes with a bit less in terms of a surprise. So far Google has only said the LTE model was coming soon.

This refreshed Nexus 7 is still sporting a 7-inch form factor, however it will arrive with a much nicer display as compared to the original. The tablet will arrive with a 1920 x 1200 resolution and a 323 ppi. Other specs include 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, 2GB of RAM and a quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor with Adreno 320 graphics.

Sony Android 4.3 upgrade plans detailed for select Xperia devices
Jul 25th 2013, 13:53, by Robert Nelson

Fresh off the Android 4.3 announcement from Google, Sony has offered some details in terms of which devices would be getting an update. So far there is talk of six Xperia devices getting the update to Android 4.3. And coming in addition there was also mention of some Android 4.2 plans as well as some plans to have devices jump from Android 4.1 to Android 4.3.

With that in mind, those lucky six devices that have been confirmed for an Android 4.3 update include the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP and the Xperia Z Ultra. On the flip side of this positive sounding news — Sony has yet to offer anything in terms of a timeline. And on top of that, we also know that carriers will often stand in the way of a speedy delivery so they can take some time for testing.

Shifting over to the Android 4.2 news and there was mention of the update being “well underway” for the Xperia Z and Xperia ZL. There was also mention that the Xperia ZR and the Xperia Tablet Z will be getting Android 4.2 beginning in early-August. Again, the timeline for this update will likely come down to carrier approvals. There were not many specifics about which devices may be jumping from Android 4.1 to Android 4.3 though.

On this topic Sony has simply said they are “looking at uplifting some of our other devices running 4.1 direct to 4.3.” In addition there were comments about how the will share more details when they can. Moving away from the talk of getting the updates, Sony also took some time to break down just what goes into getting an update ready for a device.

Basically, they detailed the process which was said to consist of “two main phases.” These include the bring up phase and the test certification and approval phase. And while that makes it sound rather simple, the process actually involves quite a bit more.

They have to make sure the software runs, make sure the basic functionality goes into place, integrate any Android patches, add the Sony features, test and make sure the software is all stable and then get it certified and approved. Of course, this just back to earlier in the post when we mentioned how these updates sometimes take some and that the carrier can sometimes cause the process to go slower than one would hope for.

Lenovo K910 image leak further details a Snapdragon 800 smartphone
Jul 25th 2013, 13:32, by Robert Nelson

Lenovo has the K900 smartphone which is sporting a 5.5-inch display and Intel processor, however it is looking like the K910 will be shifting from Intel. A recent benchmark leak pointed towards the Lenovo K910 as having a 2.1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. And just to make mention, those benchmarks were showing results that were just shy of 30,000.

Specifically, they were sitting at 29,231. But for now we can put that piece to the side because it is looking like some images of the Lenovo K910 have recently leaked. The images are coming by way of the Chinese language Lenovo Mobile forums and have the handset listed as being either the K910 or the K6. These images are showing a look at the front and back as well as the side.

Perhaps more important though, there are some specs being confirmed by way of the display. For example, the details show this handset as having an Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 with Adreno 330 graphics. And while we have yet to see the size of the display, the resolution has been pegged at 1920 x 1080.

Simply put, assuming these specs hold accurate — it looks like Lenovo is getting ready to step up in the mobile world. Of course, that goes along with talk we heard coming from Lenovo back in June. At that time Lenovo had mentioned a goal of selling 50 million mobile phones before the end of the fiscal year.

Just for the record, that ends time is not until March 2014. That all being said, while the Lenovo K910 certainly seems like it will be a powerhouse, it is probably not a handset that will see a widespread release outside of China. For now though, we have these images and looking forward we wouldn’t be surprised if there were more leaks.
