Tesco Hudl tablet arrives for those in the UK
Sep 30th 2013, 18:50, by Robert Nelson

The Tesco Hudl tablet was unveiled just last week and as was promised, that tablet is now available for purchase. The Hudl has arrived as a 7-inch device with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, but much of the focus seems to be on the pricing. The tablet is budget priced and those looking to check it out should be able to find it at roughly 1000 retail locations. Of course, it is also available for online sales.

In regards to the budget pricing, Tesco has the tablet priced at £119, however they have also said those with a Clubcard will be able to pick one up for “less than £100.” Pricing aside, that 7-inch display has a resolution of 1440 x 900 and the tablet is powered by a quad-core 1.5GHz processor which has been paired with 1GB of RAM.

Other specs for the Hudl include 16GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, Mali 400 quad-core GPU, Bluetooth and dual-band WiFi. The basics such as an accelerometer, gyroscope and other sensors are also included. As well you will find micro-HDMI, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a pair of speakers that sit on the backside of the tablet.

Tesco will also have the Hudl tablet available in a few other colors. The product listings show the tablet in black, purple, blue and red, though as of this time the only color option not sporting a coming soon tag is the black. And aside from the tablet itself, Tesco also has a range of accessories available including a soft-touch folding case.

Google Play Store vending machines hit Japan
Sep 30th 2013, 18:31, by Nate Swanner

You can get lots of things from vending machines in Japan: tea, snack foods, beer, and now Android Apps. Capitalizing on the popular Japanese method for getting just about anything, Google has released a series of Play Store vending machines. The Play Store vending machines are tipped to offer apps and games via NFC, rather than a download.

Google Play Vending Machines

The monstrous machines won't house any devices, though, so you won't be able to pick up a Chromebook or Nexus device from the machines. Instead, you can browse a variety of apps, and use your NFC enabled device to quickly load your selection. For those without an NFC enabled Android phone (really?), Google will have a Nexus device on-hand. You can try the app out, decide if it's for you, then load it the old fashioned way.

Using the machine is pretty simple, too: you set your phone on a tray (which pairs to your device using NFC), select your app, and the machine just loads for you. There are just shy of 20 apps available via vending machine right now, so don't get too excited just yet. Google expects more apps to come in short order, as this program is just beginning. In addition to NFC, you'll also need a device running Android 4.0 or higher.

If you're interested in checking them out, they'll be outside the Parco store in Shibuya from tomorrow on. Two Google employees will be on-hand to guide you through the process, if you have issues, or lend you a Nexus 4 to check out apps on. The program is exclusive to Japan for now, but could spread if proven successful.

Straight Talk and Net10 data throttling policy clarified
Sep 30th 2013, 17:41, by Robert Nelson

TracFone has recently offered a bit of an update in terms of the data throttling policies for Straight Talk and Net10. Both are currently offering unlimited data options, however as many are familiar with, those unlimited claims often need further clarification. That being the case, we last heard from Straight Talk back in April when they denied those 1.5GB cutoff rumors.

Anyway, while there will still be some potential for throttling under both Straight Talk and Net10, there is a bit more room than just 1.5GB. This latest round of details are coming by way of TracFone who have said the limit to keep in mind will be 2.5GB. But they are not talking about cutting anyone off if or when they reach that limit. Instead the speeds will just be slowed.

According to a statement provided to Fierce Wireless, the TracFone representative said if a customer reaches 2.5GB in a billing cycle, “data will continue at 2G speeds for the remainder of the 30-day cycle.” To further that, the rep also made it clear that “high speed data is restored once a new 30-day service plan is added.” Of course, there are the other items that should also be considered.

In addition to offering some clarification in terms of the throttling limits, the same TracFone rep also touched on the other side and mentioned the right to terminate service. This is similar to what we see with other carriers and the best bet would be to read the fine print before getting service. As for the official line though, they reserve the right to terminate service for “unauthorized or abnormal usage.”
