Butterfly 2 leak shows HTC sticking with big displays, bright colors
Sep 30th 2013, 19:58, by Dustin Earley

The HTC Butterfly, even beside devices like the HTC One and One Mini, is still a brilliant handset. It features more or less the same specs as the flagship One, but boasts a different look and feel. This week we get a good look at the front panel for the newest HTC Butterfly, showing us that HTC still has special plans for the series.

If the newest leaks are right (we have every reason to believe they are) the HTC Butterfly 2 will sport a similar look to the Butterfly and Butterfly S, with a little bit of influence from HTC’s Windows Phone handsets, like the 8XT. Three displays for the Butterfly 2 show the device coming in black, white and blue, with a front-facing speaker that looks like a small oval placed between the home and back buttons — very similar to the 8XT.

We don’t get to see the back of the device in the leaks, but with the front panel looking so similar to previous generations, we believe the back will look similar as well. As for the specs of the Butterfly 2, it’s rumored to come in with a 5.2-inch 1080p display, Boom Sound speakers, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800.

Neither the Butterfly or Butterfly S were widely available or popular in the US, but the Droid DNA, which is closely related to the Butterfly family, was well received on Verizon. Unfortunately, there’s no chance we’ll see a Droid DNA 2 based on the Butterfly 2, as Motorola now owns exclusive rights to the Droid name. With any luck, the Butterfly 2 will make an appearance stateside some other way.

Leaked Nexus 5 log details specs and subtle UI changes
Sep 30th 2013, 19:53, by Dustin Earley

As we sit and wait for any morsels of official Nexus 5 news to hit the wire, we’ll take anything unofficial we can get. Over the weekend, a log file from a Nexus 5 running KitKat (still being referred to Key Lime Pie internally in some places) leaked that shows us not only some interesting specs on the Nexus 5, but some subtle UI changes coming to Android 4.4 as well.

Originating on Myce.com, the log file has been tossed around the web and torn down by several different sources, all coming up with essentially the same information, all confirming this is indeed the real deal. The log file confirms some rumored specs on the Nexus 5, and sheds some light others that were still questionable.

According to the log, the Nexus 5 will come with:

  • 4.97-inch full HD 1080p display (at 442 ppi)
  • 2.3 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800
  • 2GB of RAM
  • At least one model will come with 16GB of internal storage
  • 8MP rear camera
  • 1.2MP front-facing camera
  • Accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope, proximity, light, barometer and orientation sensors
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC
  • Wireless charging

Nothing revealed in the log is too surprising, except maybe the camera. The Nexus 5 is supposed to be based on the LG G2, but it appears that much like the Nexus 4 and Optimus G, Google will again be using a different sensor in its Nexus variant. For those of us who have been let down by past Nexus cameras, this feels like a bad sign, but it’s far too early to know anything yet.

The subtle UI changes mentioned earlier can be found in a screenshot accompanying the log file, showing light gray, instead of blue, status bar icons. Google has long used blue for all sorts of icons and indicators, but it looks like that may be changing in Android 4.4. Previous rumors said there would be a wide variety of different system colors to choose from, and that light gray would be an option, but we’ve yet to see anything else.

So far, it looks like the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 are shaping up to be just what we expected: solid updates to already solid products. Nothing revolutionary, but exciting nonetheless. If recent rumors are right, we’re just over two weeks away now from seeing both the new Nexus, and the latest version of Android revealed. October 14 can’t come soon enough.

Leaked Xperia Z1 f packs Snapdragon 800, 4.3-inch display
Sep 30th 2013, 19:49, by Dima Aryeh

The mini versions of flagships have never been as good as their full sized counterparts. There are always big sacrifices to be made. The devices have worse processors, less RAM, worse cameras, and a worse overall experience. Lag is more prevalent, pictures come out worse, and it’s nothing like using the full sized device. If these newest leaks are legit, Sony may be aiming to change that.

These leaks are believed to be from NTT DoCoMo, a Japanese carrier, and they show off an unannounced phone called the Xperia Z1 f (SO-02F) next to the well known Xperia Z1 (SO-01F). It’s a 4.3-inch version of the Z1, looking very similar, but the sacrifices don’t go far past the bump down to a 720p resolution.

This small device packs a 2.2GHz quad core Snapdragon 800 processor, the fastest Qualcomm makes and the same one as its full sized counterpart. It also has the large 20.7 megapixel sensor the Z1 is known for. Other specs include 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, a 2,300 mAh battery, IP55/IP58 dust and water resistance, and a 9.4mm thick body. It’s also 5mm shorter than the (fairly large) HTC One Mini.

Not much else is known about this device, like a release date or whether it’s even real. Such specs in a small body are amazing and haven’t really been done so far, so we’re remaining skeptical. But we can definitely wish, because the Android world needs more smaller phones with beastly hardware. What do you think of this device?
