Dungeons & Dragons: Arena of War rolls into Android, available for free
Oct 25th 2013, 03:55, by Juan Carlos Torres

Fans of the venerable franchise may praise or curse this latest news, but finally an official Dungeons & Dragons game is now available on Android. While the game does feature familiar settings, races, and classes, the game might fail to satisfy D&D purists and fans.

Dungeons & Dragons: Arena of War takes place in the Forgotten Realms setting, one of the most popular campaigns in the D&D world and familiar to players of Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter video games. That world, however, is undergoing a historic and somewhat cataclysmic time of change called The Sundering. As always, you, the player, are called upon to fight on the side of good to ensure that the balance of power remains.

The game is somewhat of a mishmash of D&D mythos and popular, if not cliche, mobile game mechanics. Players don’t get to create their own character but must instead choose from a list that mixes up races and classes. They are, however, still free to customize their characters via feats, or powers as the game calls them. Players who have played with other RPG-like or card-based mobile games will feel quite at home with the mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons: Arena of War, which includes the usual daily rewards, locked items, and, of course, in-game purchases. Players may or may not like the fact that controls don’t depend on a virtual d-pad, but the attack gesture makes you feel like you’re playing Angry Birds instead.

Gamers looking for an authentic D&D experience might do well to skip this one and wait for mobile versions of the classics that may be coming soon. It might not hurt to give it a whirl first and see if it has anything special to offer, considering that it’s available for a very low price of free.
