The Google Play Store October 24 event has come and gone, but no new products have been announced. In fact, the media is yet to cover the event for which the company reportedly issued invites.
When we first got wind of this particular New York-based event, our thoughts immediately went to the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat, but soon after that we heard that the event would not feature any hardware.
But the event – because there definitely was something going on – wasn't apparently for the media or the public.
Interestingly though, Google did post quite a few updates with pictures from the event on its Google Play Twitter account, thus proving it did have something planned for today – and even building some sort of anticipation if we were to speculate.
But from the looks of it, the company simply celebrated its "favorite books, games and more of past and present." Check out this series of tweets, in chronological order:

To further confuse anxious Android fans waiting for some kind of special event, Google's servers went down in the hours preceding the private event, although that may have been just a glitch in the matrix.
The whole Google non-event also ignited reddit, where various topics talked about what may or may not happen.
Speculations aside, it was Geek's Russel Holly that took to Twitter to explain that nothing is going on today – well, at least for the public, because those pictures above were definitely taken at some sort of event. Here's what he said about this confusion:
Alright, guys. I’m the blogger from Geek.com who started this whole mess. Amusingly enough, I’m also the guy who reported about the Google Play edition phones that started the whole “I’ll eat my dick if it’s true” thing. ASUS making the next Nexus 10 was also me, for what it’s worth. I don’t do a lot on Reddit, but you guys have been really funny whenever breaking news happens.
Nothing is happening tonight. There will be no live stream, no press conference, nothing. No one is coming out on stage with a mystery device in their pocket, and no one that I know has been given a N5 or N10 for review yet. For your information, while we do occasionally get those before they are available for sale we do not get them before they are announced.
I didn’t break an NDA. The Google Play team didn’t think I would react the way I did when I got the invitation, and neglected to include some kind of note asking me not to share it. I caused that team a lot of headaches this past week as a result. It was a communication error, and I jumped the gun. End of story, I promise.
It’s been a long month, and we don’t have too much longer to wait if what I am hearing is true. I’m sorry I screwed up and got everyone’s hopes up, and I’m pissed that I have to apologize because I’m just as excited about this phone as everyone else, but please take my word for it. Nothing is going to happen tonight.

To be honest, I don’t have the answer to that. Big companies hire bands for small events all the time, and usually it really is because reasons. The price was right, the band was available, and that’s all she wrote. It happens, and it isn’t indicative of anything.
For what it’s worth, we’ll point out that Google/Motorola had a similar “non-event” related to the Moto X well ahead of its official launch, so considering that first tweeted image – the one where one can see plenty of Android devices – we can’t but wonder whether this is something similar. In case you forgot, at that Moto X private event, the Moto X was the guest of honor.
