Last week we heard that Android 4.4 Kit Kat would bring a lot of support to the TV, and today’s leak suggests it’s going to be all about low-end phones and wearables. Interestingly enough, back in June it was rumored that the next version of Android would be able to support devices with 512MB RAM, so I guess this isn’t surprising. The move to support older and cheaper devices should help fragmentation, but the big question is will manufacturers take the time to offer software updates for those phones?

I think the bigger part of this story is the support for wearables. Hardware such as Google Glass and smartwatches are going to explode over the next few years, so this makes the most sense. Kit Kat will also support three new sensors: geomagnetic rotation vector, step detection, and step counters. This could compete with Apple’s dedicated motion processor in the iPhone 5S.

Going back to the TV, word is that we will see improvements with IR blaster integration. However, it doesn’t appear that the Nexus 5 will offer an IR blaster, but a lot of other phones do.

Android 4.4 will also include a fullscreen mode allowing apps to be displayed edge to edge. Last but not least, we should see new battery saver options. That is going to be necessary when you consider the fact that the Nexus 5 only sports a 2,300mAh battery.
