Omate TrueSmart watch won't ship with Google Play Store support after all
Oct 23rd 2013, 02:53, by Chris Smith

The Omate TrueSmart is a Kickstarter-funded "water-resistant standalone smartwatch 2.0" that won't ship with Google Play Store support or Google or Google Services, despite initial claims.

The smartwatch project managed to raise over $1 million from over 4,000 backers, even though it initially had a $100,000 goal, with one of its selling points being the fact that it doesn't require a connection to a different smart device to offer smart features.

The Omate TrueSmart is described as a 3G-enabled device that could work as a standalone Android-based smartphone and offer access to all that Android has to offer on a tiny, more portable screen.

However, CEO Laurent Le Pen on Tuesday posted an updated on the Kickstarter page of the project to inform backers that the device won't have access to the Google Play store initially.

Le Pen added that the company is working with Google in order to have the TrueSmart certified to run Google Play Store and Google Services, although he did not provide any other details about the certification process.

It looks like the TrueSmart won't be the "world’s first smartwatch 2.0 with Google Play App Store" support after all, and considering that Google is rumored to work on its own smartwatch, Omate may never enjoy that title – but, at this point, that's only speculation from our part.

The Omate TrueSmart watches should ship at some point this month for developers and in November and December (depending on pledges) for everyone else, and Le Pen said in the same note to backers that the company is dedicated to "ship the TrueSmart on time, on specs and on quality."
