Evernote opens up 2nd annual Devcup competition

Posted: 25 Apr 2012 01:01 PM PDT

I doubt there's any developer (or any one, for that matter) that wouldn't mind some extra money. To that end, I present to you Evernote's second annual Devcup competition, put together by Evernote to encourage brainstorming and development using Evernote's own API, with $100,000 in prizes available. According to the company, last year's competition had nearly a thousand participants who came up with some pretty stellar stuff. Think you have what it takes to take home the $20,000 grand prize? Click here for the details and let us know in the comments if you plan on competing (trash talking welcome ;-) )!

Sony updates ICS info for 2011 Xperia models

Posted: 25 Apr 2012 12:16 PM PDT

If you're rocking any Sony Xperia phone from last year and you're wondering where your ice cream sandwich love is, Sony would like to ease your concerns. In a recent blog post,  one of the software developers stated that the company is right on schedule for its ICS rollout. While there were no specific dates mentioned, for products the blog did list a site where a list of available software kits is available. Interestingly enough, in order to install the update, you'll need to download the installer to your computer, plug in your device, and push the software manually.

Has anyone already gotten their Ice Cream Sandwich? How are you liking it? Let us know in the comments below!

HTC/Facebook jointly developed phone in the works?

Posted: 25 Apr 2012 10:46 AM PDT

When Google decided to release its first official proprietary phone way back in early 2010, it chose HTC to create the Nexus One. While not the commercial success that Google had hoped, it was widely loved by developers and Android OS tinkerers. Fast forward a few years, and both successive Nexus phones have been designed and built by Samsung. Whatever the reasons, HTC hasn't been involved, and, according to "industry sources", has decided to move on with a different partner: social network monolith Facebook. In an article at Digitimes, these sources were quoted as saying,

"HTC had previously joined forces with Google to launch Google's first own-brand smartphone, the Nexus One. However, Google then shifted to cooperating with Samsung as its primary production partner for the launch of its second and third own-brand smartphones.

The new Android smartphone being developed by HTC will have a platform exclusive to Facebook to enable and integrate all functions available on the social networking site, the sources indicated. Previously, HTC launched two Facebook-enabled smartphones, the Salsa and Chacha."

The reasoning has merit, especially given HTC's history of social networking integration and even their social networking based devices, the aforementioned Salsa and Chacha. HTC has also been recruiting and acquiring business partners of late, most notably Beats Audio and their own acquisition, MOG. As always, time will tell, but such a deal certainly makes sense. On Facebook's end, they've had their own acquisitions and seem to be on the move towards...something, though it's anybody's guess as to what.

Have your own guesses? Let us know in the comments!

Will Google stay with Samsung for Galaxy Nexus successor?

Posted: 25 Apr 2012 10:22 AM PDT

Has Google decided to stick with Samsung for the fourth generation of the Nexus line of Android smartphones?  If you believe a new report out of DigiTimes then the answer is a certain yes. Advising that Google has already chosen Samsung, the news outlet quotes a source close to the matter.

Since Samsung has become the top vendor of Android smartphones, Google will continue to have Samsung develop its next-generation Nexus models, leveraging Samsung's innovation ability with regard to the Android platform, and its ability to control the supply of key components, said sources.

If history is any indication then we might look for the Nexus 4 to closely resemble the Galaxy S III but come with Android 5/Jelly Bean.  The Nexus S was similar to the first generation of Galaxy S while the Galaxy Nexus was not all that different from the Galaxy S II.  Keep a close eye on the May 3 Unpacked event as it could foretell the next Pure Google experience.

T-Mobile to announce Galaxy Note at CTIA?

Posted: 25 Apr 2012 10:04 AM PDT

A new set of images have surfaced which show a production-ready Galaxy Note with T-Mobile branding.  Obtained by TmoNews, the small gallery tells us that the Magenta model should arrive with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.  It's unclear whether the hardware varies from the AT&T edition however we don't expect it to be all the different.  As such, T-Mobile customers should look forward to the 5.3-inch smartphone/tablet in the near future.  Our gut tells us that the carrier announces the phone at CTIA in early May but may hold back on a launch date or pricing.

Scalado releases first Android app, ‘Album’

Posted: 25 Apr 2012 10:00 AM PDT

Scalado today released their first Android application, Album, an alternative to the gallery client that comes with your smartphone or tablet.  Available in Google Play today, the app runs 99¢ and works on 2.3.7+ devices, including tablets.

What makes Album different from the standard gallery app that comes preloaded on your handset?  It's fast, intuitive, and organized into different views.  Want to check all the pictures you've taken in April?  Bingo.  Want to see your photos listed in a map view that shows exactly where they were taken?  Presto.  Pull up the Nearby view and see photos taken close to your current GPS location.

We've played with a review build of Scalado Album for a week now and have come to appreciate its browsing, zooming, and panning speeds.  The various views aren't necessarily groundbreaking but they're handy to have in one collection.  One feature that I do enjoy is the animated thumbnail previews of videos when looking through folders.  This is convenient to have when you've recorded multiple clips in succession and need to quickly identify a particular video.

Features:

  • Superior gallery performance
  • Clean and smooth user experience
  • Intuitive browsing and navigation
  • Instant pan and zoom into every detail
  • Animated video thumbnails
  • Works on Android tablets

Views:

  • All - Shows all photos on the device
  • Places - Groups images into named geographical locations
  • Nearby - Shows all photos taken nearby the current GPS location
  • Map View -  Mapping of photos accessible from all grid views
  • Months - Groups images after calendar month captured
  • Folders – Shows images grouped after existing folders
  • Camera Roll - Shows all photos taken with the device camera

Galaxy S “dummybox” prototype reveals custom navigation softkeys

Posted: 25 Apr 2012 09:49 AM PDT

Despite a slew of mockups and fakes of the next generation Galaxy device, there hasn't been any sort of actual leakage from the Samsung camp. This is a real triumph too, considering that we're such a short time away from their grand unveiling. It seems however, that The Verge has managed to get a leaked picture from an anonymous donor. Before you get too excited, the device in the picture is in a "dummybox", a mockup plastic housing that merely holds the internal hardware for testing. One bauble we can take away is the revelation of the custom navigation softkeys that Samsung is apparently planning on using. Never content with stock, you can see that Samsung swapped the multitasking and back button positions and changed the appearance of the menu key. Personally, I have mixed feelings on this, as I liked the simplicity of the stock menu key, but Samsung's will probably be more noticeable for those that aren't familiar with ICS.

What other modifications of ICS will Samsung make in the final product? We'll know for sure on May 3rd, but we'd like to hear your thoughts on the matter. Let us know in the comments!

Review: Samsung EHS-71 headphones

Posted: 25 Apr 2012 07:00 AM PDT

When Samsung reached out to us to gauge our interest in reviewing their new "Refined Sound" headphones I immediately jumped at the opportunity.  And why not?  With materials such as lightweight aircraft aluminum materials, the EHS-71 wired headphones promised "exceptional noise isolation, clear, natural vocals, detailed highs and deep, powerful base (sic) without distortion."  Considering these guys run about $129 a pair, I had pretty high expectations.

Taking the headphones out of the box I found them to be very light, if almost too light.  I loved the way the the cord felt and was already set to bid farewell to tangles. The earbuds, made of very malleable material, bent and flexed easily as they went into the ear.  These look sexy, sophisticated, and classy; So far, so good.

Whenever I try out a new set of  headphones I will give two preliminary tests: electronic music and spoken word.  As a fan of house and progressive music, I was eager to test out the "powerful bass".  Unfortunately, I can't say that the EHS-71 delivered on this front.  While they were not shoddy or tinny, I simply didn't hear what I wanted or expected.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I found the headphones to work exceptionally well for spoken word, podcasts, and audiobooks.  The clarity here was as good as anything else I've experienced with headsets, if not better.  As much of what I listen to during my days is news-y or NPR-like in nature, the EHS-71 are a perfect fit.  However, those of you looking for a thick, deep sound may be disappointed.

Compared to other wired headphones that I have tested the Samsung EHS-71 match up pretty well.  Priced a bit lower I would have no difficulty in recommending them to other users.  But, at $129 a set, they are a little too rich for the blood of most folks.  If you can score them for around $100 or less then I say snatch them up.  On a final note, these are the most expensive of the new series of Samsung headphones; The next model down is a cool $50 less.
