Verizon Posts Galaxy Nexus 4.0.4 Update On Support Page – Rolling Out Soon (For Real This Time)

Posted: 29 May 2012 06:17 PM PDT

It’s been dragging its feet, but the official Android 4.0.4 update for the Galaxy Nexus should be hitting your device any minute/day/week now. Verizon’s support page has just posted the update, letting users know an OTA will be issued in the coming days. The IMM76K software update not only brings the Verizon Galaxy Nexus up to speed with GSM versions of the Nex, but should fix a few nasty bugs users have been experiencing since the device’s release. Good luck, everyone, and godspeed.

Thanks, Mimsy!

ASUS Nexus 7 Tablet Outed In Benchmark Running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

Posted: 29 May 2012 05:21 PM PDT

It wouldn’t be the first time a benchmark site has outed an Android device, and it looks like it wont be the last. The 7-inch ASUS Nexus 7 was just outed in a Rightware Basemark ES 2.0 Taiji benchmark, and it clues us in to a few details surrounding the mysterious budget tablet Google has up their sleeves (and will no doubt use to take over the world).

You can see from the screenshot above the device will have a 1280×768 resolution display, Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core (there were rumblings that it could launch with a dual-core to cut costs) and the kicker (as taken from the raw data found in the benchmark) — Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

This is assuming that the build number (JRN51B) is code for Jelly Bean, and we’re inclined to believe that it is. It’s going to be an exciting year for Android and we expect to learn a whole lot more about this tablet when it’s unveiled at Google I/O in just a few short weeks. Don’t forget, Phandroid will be reporting live from the entire event bringing you the latest as it breaks. I’m officially hyped. Are you?

Official: HTC EVO 4G LTE And One X Have Cleared Customs And Are Ready For Take Off

Posted: 29 May 2012 04:37 PM PDT

Even though the HTC EVO 4G LTE’s have been shipping to a few pre-orders since last Friday, there has been nary a word from the Taiwanese manufacturer about the status of the HTC One X on AT&T and that of future devices. All that changed today when HTC released the following official statement:

"HTC has completed the review process with US Customs and HTC devices have been released, as they are in compliance with the ITC’s ruling. Future shipments should continue to enter the US and we are confident that we will soon be able to meet the demand for our products."

So, there it is, folks. Looks like everything at customs checked out, and HTC was successful in their inconvenient workaround for a software patent belonging to Apple. Happy day, everyone. Expect shiny new devices from HTC making their way to your favorite carrier retail store.

This is why the Pebble Blue Samsung Galaxy S III is delayed

Posted: 29 May 2012 02:54 PM PDT

Ladies and Gentlemen, the reason the Samsung Galaxy S III in Pebble Blue has been delayed two to three weeks. We had heard Samsung somehow botched the paint job, but now we have visual confirmation of the problem. A European mobile blog received an early version of the device and and pictures clearly show a splotchy white tinge to the finish. Hopefully they figure out the issue and get the phone back on track, or we might be expecting some serious delays with a much more limited supply of GS3s on the market.

Samsung Xperia Ion flashes AT&T LTE at the FCC

Posted: 29 May 2012 02:40 PM PDT

The Sony Xperia Ion was announced at the beginning of the year, but entering the halfway point of 2012 we still don’t have a solid release date. Signs point to June, and a trip the halls of the FCC further suggests a release next month. AT&T LTE is here with support for the 700MHz and 1700MHz bands. 3G support is present for AT&T’s standard 850MHz and 1900MHz bands, but a 1700MHz allotment is a bit of an anomaly. That frequency is typical to T-Mobile, but likely has little to do with the two carriers’ failed merger attempt. The label says Sony Ericsson, and this will likely be one of the last releases to feature the branding.

Samsung unveils Chromebox and new Series 5 Chromebook

Posted: 29 May 2012 02:22 PM PDT

Samsung and Google have a new round of Chrome-powered devices headed our way, complete with a revamped UI. The Samsung Series 5 550 Chromebook and Chromebox deploy Intel CPUs to provide close to three times the power as the initial run of Chrome hardware. The Chromebook can boot in seven seconds flat.

The Series 5 Chromebook features a 12.1-inch display, 4GB RAM, WiFi and 3G, an HD camera and HDMI/DVI/VGA outpouts. It’s price is a bit higher than older models at $449. The Chromebox offers a desktop experience and features a similar array of outputs as the Chromebook as well as WiFi, 4GB RAM, Bluetooth 3.0 and six USB ports.

The real draw here is Google’s new take on Chrome OS that moves the the operating system from a single browser to a more traditional windowed experience based around the Chrome web browser. Separate windows and web apps can run simultaneously while cloud connectivity and Google Drive offer an experience with heavy emphasis on the web.

The new devices are available today from online retailers in the US and UK and will be coming to other countries soon.

Samsung Galaxy S III appears in US Cellular’s computer system

Posted: 29 May 2012 01:00 PM PDT

It’s pretty much a no brainer that the Samsung Galaxy S III will launch on the four major US carriers, but with regional carriers we can’t be so sure. With an entry in their internal computer system, US Cellular can be added to the list of networks expected to receive the new Samsung flagship handset. The listings show a 16GB model in both white and pebble blue color schemes.

We’re not sure when any US carriers will officially announce the Galaxy S III, but a summer launch is what we are looking for. The US Cellular version might ship later than those for Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T, but a simultaneous release would also make sense.

OTA update prepped for T-Mobile’s Samsung Exhibit II 4G, rebrands phone to Galaxy Exhibit 4G

Posted: 29 May 2012 12:25 PM PDT

T-Mobile has an update ready for the Samsung Exhibit II 4G that brings the phone’s software build to T679UVLE1. The major element of the update that leaves the phone’s software at Android 2.3.6 isn’t what it enhances or fixes with the software but rather a rebranding effort that now has the handset going by the name of Galaxy Exhibit 4G.

Other than the new name, users can expect a security patch, general stability improvements, and improvements to WiFi calling and the phone’s camera app. The rollout will commence May 30th and continue through June 15th.

Motorola Vanquish tipped as international Droid RAZR HD, LTE-enabled Asanti headed to AT&T

Posted: 29 May 2012 11:48 AM PDT

A handful of new Motorola handsets have been revealed for various markets around the globe, which should keep the new Google acquisition plenty busy for the summer season. One we are already fairly familiar with is the Motorola Vanquish, which has leaked previously as the Motorola DROID RAZR HD for Verizon. As the name and rumors surrounding it suggest, the LTE-capable phone will sport a 720p HD display when it hits the US (XT926), China (XT922, XT980), and other areas of the world in UMTS (XT923) and LTE (XT925) flavors.

Another LTE-enabled handset will making its way to AT&T in the US is being called the Motorola Asanti (XT898). PocketNow says the phone with a qHD display could be a rebranded variant of Verizon’s Droid 4 and will feature a QWERTY slider. Internationally the phone will launch with model numbers XT987 and XT 896.

Other names mentioned include the Motorola Dinara MB886, Motorola Primus XT621, and Motorola Yangtze, which will get model numbers XT881, XT885, XT886, XT889, aand MT887. The latter recently launched in China as the Motorola RAZR V. A followup to the Motorola Photon 4G on Sprint is also in the works, the Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE.

Samsung Music Hub is a music and internet radio service for Samsung devices

Posted: 29 May 2012 08:14 AM PDT

Samsung has another trump card to place in their back pockets. They’ve introduced their Music Hub, a service that will allow users to stream over 19 million songs for a monthly fee (about 1o euros for now). Users will be able to make playlist, receive recommendations, create internet radio stations based on artists and songs, and a lot more.

“How is this any different from other music services,” you ask? Well, Samsung also allows you to buy music, will host that music in the cloud, allow you to download that music from the cloud for offline playback, access your music from any device with a web browser, and allow you to upload your own music. It sounds like it’ll bring the best of all worlds into one convenient package.

Unfortunately, it won’t be available on anything other than the Galaxy S3 to start, but that is surely bound to change. We’re not sure if Samsung will bring the service for non-Samsung devices, but it’s a bit early to wonder about that considering this is only available for one of their own phones.

Google, Apple, and all the major internet streaming radio and music store players will definitely get a run for their money. We can’t yet speak to the quality of the service, but if everything goes according to plan they could become a major threat.

Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and the United Kingdom will be blessed with the first chance to use the service. If you’ve got the right hardware and live in the right country, you can go ahead and get started here.

Huawei to introduce Emotion UI for upcoming Android phones

Posted: 29 May 2012 07:35 AM PDT

It appears Huawei is going to introduce a new user interface that will be featured on some of their summer releases. They’re reportedly calling it Emotion UI and it should be first available on the Huawei Ascend P1 and Ascend P1s, as well as the Huawei D Quad, their quad-core flagship offering.

The devices had minimal user interface customization when we revisited them at CTIA in New Orleans, but it was undoubtedly very early and unfinished. We’re not sure what, exactly, to expect from Emotion UI, but we imagine it’ll be a deep tissue massage for Android 4.0 as they’ve been working on it for quite some time.

The P1 and P1s were introduced at CTIA this past January and they were pushing completely stock Android. The same was true at Mobile World Congress. The minimal changes we saw at CTIA explains the time it’s taking for the devices to make it to store shelves. Things will be unveiled June 9th, apparently, so we’ll be bringing you coverage once that day arrives (or sooner if we’re lucky). [Mobile 163 via PocketNow]

Panasonic Lumix remote companion app for DMC-FX90 launches

Posted: 29 May 2012 06:48 AM PDT

Panasonic have released a new app that owners of their DMC-FX90 camera will want to download. It’s an app that allows you to remotely control the camera using your Android device. It’ll allow you to check the viewfinder, zoom in and out, focus, and take a self portrait. It’s not amazing, but still wouldn’t hurt to have for those tricky situations and angles. Android 2.2 or higher is supported. Find the app in the Google Play Store here.

HTC Sensation XL update being rolled out across some of Europe

Posted: 29 May 2012 05:34 AM PDT

The HTC Sensation XL in Europe seems to be joining the Ice Cream Sandwich party as the device is now seeing rollouts across parts of Europe. Those with the unlocked device in many countries should be able to pull down the 197MB update over-the-air, and those on Three seem to be the first with a carrier-specific phone to be seeing the update. It’s odd that they’re seeing it so soon, but we’re no less excited for them. You’ll want to connect to WiFi and see if the update is headed your way ASAP. Let us know if it is. [via EuroDroid]

Sony Xperia Arc and Xperia Neo get updated to Ice Cream Sandwich

Posted: 29 May 2012 05:07 AM PDT

Sony’s making good on their promise of most 2011 phones being upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich. The Sony Xperia Arc and Sony Xperia Neo are the latest, and likely last phones to get the treatment. Updates bring them to Android 4.0.4 and brings some of the UI improvements found in all other updates so far.

More than that, the Sony Xperia Arc S, Xperia Neo V, and Xperia Ray are all coming from Android 4.0.3 to 4.0.4. These’ll undoubtedly bring some much needed bug fixes both on Google’s side and Sony’s. You’ll need to use Sony’s companion app to get the update as it’s not available over-the-air.

Unfortunately, not all 2011 Xperia phones are being graced with this update as originally promised. The Xperia Play’s update has been canned for one reason or another, so those users will have to rely on community ROMs if they want to get going on the latest versions of Android. Be sure to find your phone here. [via Xperia Blog]
