Add-on Pack Gives Galaxy Nexus some Samsung Galaxy S III Goodies

Posted: 29 May 2012 12:39 PM PDT

Okay, so no Samsung Galaxy S III in hand yet, right? Soon though. Even though this is the case right now we continue to see offerings from the talented Android developers out there with things like S-voice being ported to other ICS devices. What we now see from developer madphone with additional contribution from others in the Android community is a full add-on of a number of features pulled from the SGS3.

XDA member madphone says: "This Addon Pack is meant to bring Galaxy S3 feeling to Googles Galaxy Nexus".

There it is, a nicely packed add-on for the Galaxy Nexus. Inside this flashable zip you'll find a number of stock apps from the SGS3, including sounds and icons to get that 'inspired by nature' feel. Noted in the original post is that it will flash over any CyanogenMod 9 nightly, but since this add-in has been posted, it has been tested and confirmed by the XDA community that it'll work on CM9, AOKP, SlimICS and possibly more. So if you're looking for a little Touchwiz-ness or just a nice hands-on preview of what's to come with the release of the Samsung Galaxy S III, head on over to the source, check out the rest of the screenshots, grab this add-on and give it a shot yourself. If you like what you get, let us know in the comments. Remember, don't forget to give the devs the thanks they deserve for all the hard work.

Google receives patent for ‘augmenting a field of view’ for Project Glass

Posted: 29 May 2012 10:54 AM PDT

Google Glasses or Project Glass might just be the most anticipated new technology at the moment.  We’ve reported on a few patents that are related to it, and the latest one (filed March 14, 2011) involves augmenting a field of view. What does this mean you ask? Well Google realizes the field of view for a human is 180 degrees. Not only that the human brain is unable or at least most of the time isn’t able to process all objects (and features) within this view. This means that when looking at monuments, buildings, or other objects, a person could miss out on other objects that could be of interest. This goes for both what is in the person’s field of view and of course outside their field of view, and therefore, this is what augmenting a field of view represents.

The below image represents:

The device 500 comprises two horizontal arrays of visual indicators, one above and one below the lenses. Within each array, the device 500 may illuminate a visual indicator that indicates the relative spatial location of the building 502. For example, visual indicators 504a and 504b may be illuminated, as shown. Each of visual indicators 504a and 504b is located in a center-right portion of its respective array, thereby indicating to a user of the device 500 the relative spatial location of the building 502 to the center-right of the user.

Samsung Galaxy S III possible U.S. release within the next month says Senior VP

Posted: 29 May 2012 09:42 AM PDT

Android fans in the US and pretty much anywhere outside of Europe will be glad to hear that the latest rumors surrounding the SGS3 just may be true. Based on words from TJ Kang, Senior VP of Media Services, the Samsung Galaxy S III is said be launched in June of this year. Kang leads us to believe this by stating that the SGS3 will be on a more "compressed" release timeline, unlike previous launches where we feel the device we've been waiting for will never come.

Kang says:

“So I think it will be available more or less globally within a month of the European release.”

Be sure to note the terms "I think" and "more or less". These senior exec's are normally very careful, when it comes to giving info out, so I think we can take the SVP's word for it, that we should see the release of the Samsung Galaxy S III during the month of June. If you need a refresher on this device, head on over to hands-on article of the SGS3 that Samsung uploaded to YouTube earlier this month.

Music lovers will be able to have access to over 19 million songs for purchase along with free 30 second previews of each song and a web-based interface for listening and purchasing at musichub.com. It sounds very similar to what is currently offered by competitors now so we will have to see if Sammy will be adding any distinct flavors to separate themselves from the pack. Samsung officially confirms delays for pebble blue GSIII

Posted: 29 May 2012 07:23 AM PDT

Yesterday we reported that UK carriers were expecting shipping delays on the pebble blue version of the Samsung Galaxy S III. Now Sammy has decided to come forward and officially make a statement on the matter.

"Samsung's GALAXY S III Pebble Blue version comes with a newly invented blue colour and special hyperglaze material. In order to meet the highest internal quality standards and to provide the best quality GALAXY S III to customers, a short supply of Pebble Blue version is expected in some regions in the next 2-3 weeksSamsung is working hard to ensure that customers will get the Pebble Blue coloured devices as soon as possible."

Rumors of poor quality back housing might just be the cause of this delay but we can only assume Samsung will do their best to fix the issues. I would definitely rock the pebble blue so hopefully we will begin to see more of them in the near future.

LG Set To Introduce A 5-Inch Display With 1080p HD Res And 440ppi Pixel Density

Posted: 29 May 2012 07:17 AM PDT

LG is all geared up to make their mark in the display department with the recent announcement of a new 1080p HD mobile display.  And though Toshiba holds the top spot for a highest pixel density on a mobile device, LG’s new display boasts a decent 440ppi.  With a 16:9 aspect ratio, the design was clearly made with HD on the brain.  The display itself will house a new variant of IPS, called Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching (AH-IPS).  The new version of IPS is supposed to provide wider viewing angles and faster response times.  In addition, one can expect an increase in brightness efficiency.  Availability for the new tech is reported to be around the second half of this year on a 5-inch display and looks to completely crush the competition, which are Retina displays.  Check out the full presser after the break for more details.

LG Display Develops World’s First Full HD LCD Smartphone Panel

5″ Full HD display, creating perfect cloud computing environment

Seoul, Korea (May 28, 2012) – LG Display [NYSE: LPL, KRX: 034220], a leading manufacturer of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display, introduced today a 5″ Full HD LCD panel for smartphones – the highest resolution mobile panel to date. Allowing smartphone users to view Full HD content in the same quality as on TVs and monitors, LG Display and its new panel significantly advances the cloud computing experience widely considered the next major internet trend.

LG Display’s 5″ Full HD LCD panel is a step forward past existing mobile display technology. The LCD panel based on AH-IPS (Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching) technology features 440ppi and 1920×1080 resolution, providing for the first time Full HDTV quality on a smartphone. With 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, the panel is also 0.5 inches larger, 2.2 times denser in pixels, and 1.3 times more advanced in ppi than the preceding 4.5″ panel at 329ppi and 1280×720.

“As smartphones become increasingly valued for how well they do multimedia and with the rapid growth of LTE enabling faster large file transfers, our new 5″ Full HD LCD panel is certain to prove a significant asset to the mobile market,” said Sang-Deok Yeo, CTO and Executive Vice President of LG Display. “With the world’s highest resolution smartphone display, LG Display continues to remain a step ahead in developing the most innovative in display technology products.”

The display solution of choice for smart devices, LG Display’s AH-IPS is the technology behind the new Full HD LCD display. With the high density of AH-IPS, the naked eye is unable to distinguish between individual pixels. AH-IPS panels also express the original color of images highly precisely, and feature a wide viewing angle as well as stable display image and rapid response speed when touched. Finally, with its brighter light transmission and lower power consumption, AH-IPS is ideal for use in outdoor settings.

The 5″ Full HD LCD panel from LG Display is expected to be released during the second half of this year, and will be on exhibit for the first time at SID 2012 Display Week in Boston starting June 4.

Ice Cream Sandwich for the LG Spectrum leaks

Posted: 29 May 2012 07:06 AM PDT

It’s been a little over 7 months since the Ice Cream Sandwich SDK  was released, but there are still plenty of phones waiting for the update. Those of you who own the LG Spectrum will be happy to know that the ICS update leaked. We know it’s an official update, but we don’t know if it’s the final version. What does this mean? It means we have no idea when the Spectrum will get ICS. If you can’t wait any longer, you can certainly hit the source link and try to apply it, but from what I’m seeing, other users aren’t having all that much luck.
