Facebook phone rumors surface, yet again

Posted: 29 May 2012 10:38 AM PDT

In rumors that just won't die, details have surfaced that Facebook is prepping a smartphone with plans to release it in 2013.  According to a report in the New York Times, Facebook is considering getting into the hardware business with an Android-based device that has deep integration to the social networking service.

Citing anonymous sources, the NYT piece indicates that Facebook has been poaching engineers from Apple's team and is pressing hard to turn the "Buffy" project into a reality.  One such engineer advises that he met with Mark Zuckerberg and was hammered with questions about how smartphones work, including intricacies such as processor chipsets.

Facebook has neither confirmed nor denied these recent rumors however they did remind us that they are working plenty of players in plenty of spaces.

"We're working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers."

Even if Facebook doesn't dive directly into manufacturing hardware that's not to say they wouldn't open up their wallet for someone with experience.  And, given that Google now owns Motorola, the time may be right for Facebook to pursue picking a smaller company with experience in the field.  Rumors have circulated a time or two that they may have an interest in INQ Mobile as they have created handsets with ties to the social network.

There's a big land grab happening in the mobile space right now and it wouldn't surprise us if Facebook and Google didn't go on a tear this year, picking up players across multiple areas.  The two companies are stepping onto each other's turf more and more and the mobile universe is still unfolding.

Leaked T-Mobile details include Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note launch dates

Posted: 29 May 2012 07:37 AM PDT

T-Mobile customers will soon be able to get their hands on two of Samsung's most coveted Android smartphones, according to newly leaked details.  Late last week TmoNews received  a handful of release dates for the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note.  Although they don't have pricing information to share at this time, we do know that this summer is going to be a hot one for the nation's fourth largest carrier.

Here are some tentatively scheduled release dates for a number of Android-based smartphones.  Keep in mind that, until an official  announcement is made, these things are always subject to change.

  • Samsung Galaxy S III 16GB Metallic Blue – June 20th
  • Samsung Galaxy S III 32GB Metallic Blue – June 20th
  • T-Mobile myTouch (Huawei Phoenix) – July 11th
  • T-Mobile myTouch (Huawei Buddy) – July 11th
  • Samsung Galaxy S III 16GB Ceramic White – July 11th
  • Samsung Galaxy Note – July 11th

It's interesting that the Pebble Blue version of the Galaxy S III should arrive ahead of the Marble White model, especially since it's the blue iteration that's delayed today.  Of course, there's more than a 2-3 week window between now and the rumored June 20 date so this may not be out of the question.

We don't mean to totally gloss over the Huawei stuff in this post but obviously it's not as grand as the Samsung rumors.  Given the timing of the releases we fully expect the pair of Huawei models to come in with low-end price points and entry-level specs.

Samsung Galaxy S III officially on sale in more than two dozen countries

Posted: 29 May 2012 07:02 AM PDT

After what seems like years of anticipation, the Samsung Galaxy S III has finally gone on sale in various markets around the world.  Initially available in only 28 countries, those of you living in The UK, France, Europe, Africa, and a few others can get your hands on the highly coveted handset. We still have to wait for our U.S. announcements, however we are drawing closer to that inevitable day one minute at a time.

Speaking of waiting, it appears that we'll have at least 2-3 weeks to go before the Pebble Blue version of the Galaxy S III hits some regions.  Rumors circulated over the last few days that this model would not make the launch date and that Samsung had to destroy several thousand battery covers.  A statement from the handset maker which seems to confirm that report also tells us that they 'invented' the blue hue.

"Samsung's GALAXY S III Pebble Blue version comes with a newly invented blue colour and special hyperglaze material.

"In order to meet the highest internal quality standards and to provide the best quality GALAXY S III to customers, a short supply of Pebble Blue version is expected in some regions in the next 2-3 weeks.

"Samsung is working hard to ensure that customers will get the Pebble Blue coloured devices as soon as possible."

We expect to hear more from Samsung on the Pebble Blue version of the Galaxy S  III as it swings back into production, perhaps on Twitter or Facebook.  In the interim, we'd be more than happy with the Marble White.  Because you were buying for us, right?

LG intros 5-inch 1080p display for smart devices

Posted: 29 May 2012 06:33 AM PDT

LG has introduced a new 5-inch LCD display with 1080p resolution which the company expects to make available later in the year. Boasting a whopping 440ppi pixel density it easily bests the 330ppi Retina display from Apple's iPhone 4/4S. The screen is designed for "smart devices", comes with a 16:9 aspect ratio, 1920x1080p resolution, and utilizes AH-IPS (Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching) technology. Found in other LG models, this tech allows for wider viewing angles, better touch response, and an improved color palette. LG plans to release the screen in the second half of the year but will have it on display in early June at SID Display Week, a trade show which takes place in Boston.
