VSCO Cam confirmed for Android
Jul 30th 2013, 15:11, by Robert Nelson

VSCO Cam is an app that is currently getting a bit of attention from iOS users, and well, it looks like the app is also heading to Android. The folks at VSCO Cam have confirmed they have begun working on an Android release. In fact, VSCO Cam for Android is currently being tested in a private beta.

As of now there hasn’t been any timeline given in terms of when the beta period will come to an end, however there was some detail in terms of which devices would be supported at launch. That support will be limited to the HTC One as well as the Samsung Galaxy S 4 and Galaxy S III. While only a few devices, at least they are a few devices that are rather popular.

Looking forward, VSCO Cam is also planned for other Android 4.0 devices “in the near future.” The current iOS release of VSCO Cam has the app listed as being the “standard of mobile photography.” While we have yet to see whether this will be a one-for-one feature match across iOS and Android, we do know the iOS app has plenty to offer.

One of the highlights is the fact the app has a variety of available presets and tools. The app also has something called the Precision Slider which allows the user to adjust the strength of those presets. There is also plenty of options when it comes to editing and the ability to compare your before and after images. Images can be imported and exported in full resolution, images can be shared socially and there is control in the form of separate Focus and Exposure Rings as well as a White Balance Lock.

That all being said, VSCO Cam is currently looking for beta testers. You do have to fill out a short form on the VSCO Cam website and at present they say they are looking for users that “love mobile photography and Android devices.” But perhaps more important, they are looking for users that are passionate and that are willing to find bugs and provide feedback.

Moto X "Magic Glass" shown in series of leaked images
Jul 30th 2013, 14:39, by Robert Nelson

Yesterday brought news of something called wrap-around Magic Glass for the Moto X smartphone. This was described as being a single sheet of Gorilla Glass that wraps around the front edges of the handset. And well, it looks like some close up images of the Magic Glass have recently surfaced.

This series of images is showing the front glass panel by itself. Sitting below is an image of the full front side of the glass, which is still sporting the “Motorola Confidential Property” marking. But otherwise, this panel does appear to lineup nicely with some of those earlier leaks. Aside from this single front image, there are also some looking at the panel a bit closer.

We have a few images sitting in the gallery below and those are showing more detail. Basically, in these images you can see what appears to be a little lip around the edges. We saw this in the exploded image that accompanied the Magic Glass news from yesterday. Basically, we can lump this in as yet another Moto X related leak.

Perhaps more important here is the bit about the handset being announced rather soon. Motorola has that event planned for August 1st and as a reminder, we will be live on-site to bring the latest in official details as they come available. Otherwise, while still rumor, yesterday also brought word about how the handset could go on sale as early as this weekend.

The story there was suggesting the handset has already been shipped to carriers and that it will be available very soon after the announcement. Carrier availability is expected to be wide, which was detailed by way of an earlier discovered FCC filing. There was also talk about how the Moto X will be rather competitive in terms of price. With that, we do have to remember that at this point there are plenty of rumors and few officially confirmed details.

Kwikset Kevo Bluetooth-enabled deadbolt pre-orders begin today
Jul 30th 2013, 13:54, by Robert Nelson

It is looking like Android users may soon have another option when it comes to ditching the front-door key. Kwikset has announced that pre-orders are beginning today (July 30th) for the Kevo deadbolt. This is a Bluetooth-enabled deadbolt and it brings the promise of being “intelligent enough to communicate with a smartphone and unlock with a simple touch.”

To that point, Kwikset touts the Kevo deadbolt as being able to allow the user to unlock their front door without even having to take their smartphone out of their pocket. The setup works with Bluetooth 4.0 LE technology and pairs with an app running on your smartphone. The Android app is said to currently be “underway.” Kwikset has yet to say when the app would be ready, however the deadbolt isn’t expected to ship for a few months time.

The pre-orders are available with several retailers including Amazon and Newegg as well as Home Depot and Build.com. The pre-orders all point towards shipping at the end of October, however Kwikset notes a shipping estimate of some time in September. The deadbolt will set you back $219.

The Kevo deadbolt is available in three finishes; Satin Nickel, Venetian Bronze and Polished Brass. The deadbolt runs on four (included) AA batteries and ships with the deadbolt itself as well as one fob, two regular mechanical keys and two eKeys for your smartphone. Well, technically those eKeys will have to be downloaded separately. Otherwise, Kwikset has said those AA batteries should last for up to one year.

Using this setup seems simply enough, the lock catches the signal from your phone (or fob) and you then just have to touch the lock with a finger to trigger it. Aside from ease of entry for you, this setup also allows you to send an eKey to others. This assumes that other person has a capable smartphone, however it could mean you can easily allow someone to enter your house even if you are not around.
