Google Glass

Augmented reality is one area where wearable technology, like Google Glass, really has a chance to excel. So far, no-one has been able to turn this potential into a full working idea, but Brandyn White and Andrew Miller, a team of Google Glass Explorers, have shown off their first attempt at augmented reality, in an open-source project they're calling "Open Glass".

But don't get too excited just yet, the project is still sadly bound by the limitations of Google's Mirror API, meaning that the augmented information has to be sent away for processing rather than being made available in real time. The reason for sticking with the Mirror API, even though full Android application support may be on the way in the future, is that it's officially supported by Google and therefore doesn't require users to mess around with Glass in order to make it work.

But White has stated that his team plans to eventually incorporate additional sensors and implement the idea natively with the Glass SDK, which would allow for real time augmented reality. Awesome.

The video below shows a few examples of how the technology works, including telling the user how tall a building is, finding out whether a restaurant across the street is open or not, and translating a sign into a foreign language.

What do you think about the potential of augmented reality, and would it make Google Glass that much more appealing to the general consumer?
