Ingress update rolls out to agents, new achievement profile unlocked
Sep 13th 2013, 02:15, by Juan Carlos Torres

The developers behind the popular yet also mysterious geolocation-based game Ingress has just announced an update to their Android app that will provide its Agents, what the game calls its players, not only bug fixes and improvements for a smoother experience, but also a new feature that will let them analyze the abilities of other Agents.

For those unfamiliar with the augmented reality game, Ingress revolves around a fictional and mysterious energy simply called “XM”. Players are divided into two factions competing for control of XM: the “Enlightened” who try to collect the power for the benefit of mankind, and the “Resistance” who try to protect humanity. The Ingress app acts as the interface, map, and tracker that will let Agents all over the world find and claim the mysterious energy for their faction.

Aside from the usual bevy of fixes and polishes, the new update brings a new feature to the game. A new AGENT tab has been added that displays the skills and abilities of agents. The profile now implements an achievement system familiar to gamers including a Guardian achievement for maintaining control of an energy portal for a prolonged period, a Hacker badge for hacking portals, and an Explorer title for visiting and hacking certain portals.

Version 1.35.1 of the Ingress scanner app is now available on Google Play Store and should be arriving on agents’ devices soon, if you’re already a player. If not, Ingress is still unfortunately in closed beta and requires an invite in order to join.

LG G2 coming to Canada on September 27
Sep 13th 2013, 01:45, by Juan Carlos Torres

We’ve previously reported about LG Canada announcing the arrival of its latest flagship, the LG G2, sometime this fall. Now the Canadian branch of the electronics maker is giving us an exact date for the arrival of the smartphone.

The torrent of device announcements last week might have caused many to forget LG’s latest masterpiece that was unveiled early August, although it’s somewhat hard to forget the G2′s uniquely placed volume and power-slash-camera controls at the back of the device, or its “knock knock” feature to wake the screen up with a simple double tap. Still, if you need some refreshing on what LG’s premium smartphone is all about, you can check out our initial review of the device here.

The LG G2 has just landed on major carriers in the US and, according to LG Canada, will soon be available for Canadian buyers as well. Beginning September 27, the device will be sold on quite a number of carriers and retail stores including Rogers, Bell Mobility, TELUS, Videotron, SaskTel, WIND Mobile, WIRELESSWAVE, Tbooth wireless, WIRELESS etc., Target Mobile, Best Buy, Future Shop, The Source and Mobile shop.

LG has not announced a recommended retail price for the the G2 as the carrier and retail partners will set their own pricing system, which they may tease ahead of the launch date.

Final Fantasy Agito coming to Android, free to play
Sep 13th 2013, 01:17, by Juan Carlos Torres

Square Enix, makers of the popular Final Fantasy JRPG series, has just announced that it will be bringing yet another game from that line to mobile devices. Surprisingly, the game developer will be making Final Fantasy Agito available for free on Android and iOS.

ff-agito-mobile

Final Fantasy Agito takes place in the universe of Final Fantasy Type-0, a JRPG released by Square Enix in Japan two years back for the Playstation Portable. In Type-0, the story unfolds in a place named Orience, and in Agito, players will take control of a new, player-customized character who is a student at the Orience magic academy. Producer Hajime Tabata revealed that the original Type-0 game was actually intended for mobile. The game was also initially named Final Fantasy Agito before it was changed to its current title.

Agito will feature a similar, chapter-based system used in its predecessor. In Type-0, history runs in parallel cycles. Translated to gameplay, this means that players will run through one story and, at the end of that story, history will repeat itself and a new story begins. Of course, the actions that players make in previous chapters will have impacts on succeeding ones. Tabata says that it will be possible to finish the game without paying for anything, but as with any free game, there will always be advantageous in-game items for sale. Here’s a trailer of the game to whet your appetite.

There isn’t much details yet about the game, like whether it will be available outside of Japan this time and translated to English after its release in winter. We might get to know more next week when the game is announced at the Tokyo Game Show.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra lands on Three, O2 in the UK
Sep 13th 2013, 00:42, by Juan Carlos Torres

Sony‘s newly unveiled baby, the Xperia Z1, might be grabbing most of the attention these days, but the Xperia Z Ultra will be first in making it into users’ hands. This giant of a phone is now up for grabs in the UK via carriers Three and O2.

The word that best describes the Sony Xperia Z Ultra is “gigantic”. Not unlike the recent Samsung Galaxy Mega, the phablet sports a 6.3-inch screen. But unlike Samsung’s massive device, the Xperia Z Ultra offers better hardware, with a 1080×1920 resolution, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, and 2 GB of RAM. The device might be a better alternative to those who want a phone with a huge screen but don’t want to go all the way to a 7-inch tablet.

Such users will now be able to get their hands on the phablet, if they are in the UK. O2 is now making the Xperia Z Ultra Black available on their online store, while Three is carrying the smartphone in their retail stores with online orders coming in October 18. The Xperia Z Ultra is being marketed as compatible with the carriers’ 4G networks.

O2 is offering the Sony Xperia Z Ultra in its O2 Refresh program with varying prices up to 600 GBP, around $950, and at 599.99 GBP in its Pay & Go. Three has also several offerings in place, starting with an upfront cost of 99 GBP, roughly $160, on a two-year contract, with varying options on data plans.
