Sony shares behind the scenes look at Xperia Z Ultra production
Sep 13th 2013, 04:30, by Juan Carlos Torres

The Sony Xperia Z1 maybe Sony’s latest darling, but its Xperia Z Ultra is taking center stage first. The smartphone that puts the “tablet” in has just landed in the UK and Sony is treating the public to a sneak peek at the thinking that went behind the device.

Just as it is incredibly huge, the Xperia Z Ultra is also incredibly thin at just 6.5 mm thick. That’s around the thickness of a pencil. Sony is calling it the world’s slimmest Full HD smartphone, although there might be some that would contest that. Still, let’s leave Sony to revel in that title for now as it shares an infographic detailing the materials and tricks used in making the phone that slim.

According to Sony, the Xperia Z Ultra contains many custom components that needed to be squeezed into a single slab that 6.0 inches just wasn’t enough so they had to fix it at 6.44-inches. They also say that the battery has the largest footprint but is ironically the thinnest. The image also shows other interesting materials used, like the hair-thin copper sheet for heat dispersion or the glass-filled polyamide frame that’s also used in cars as a metal substitute. You can get a full view of the image with the download link below.

The infographic ends on an interesting, if not slightly absurd, note, revealing something that some of you might have already heard. The Xperia Z Ultra’s screen is so responsive that one can use a regular pencil or pen as a stylus, as long as the tip has a diameter greater than 1 mm. Hopefully, the screen is also ink-proof.

YotaPhone dual-screen smartphone going live in November
Sep 13th 2013, 03:30, by Juan Carlos Torres

It is almost a year since Russian company Yota announced this strange, unique smartphone, which has seemingly disappeared from the map. Now it seems that the company is finally ready and is marking November as the month it will launch the YotaPhone.

No one can be blamed for giving the Russian-made YotaPhone a mere passing glance, as it looks no different from other smartphones. However, flip it over and you’ll discover what makes the device quite intriguing. The device features a 4.3-inch e-ink display on the rear which could be used not only for reading but also to display weather and other information persistently without draining the battery. You can read up on our hands-on impressions here to see why we found the device deserving of a second look.

It seems that Yota has had trouble finding support in its homeland, considering the novelty of the device as well as fierce competition from other bigger players. Nevertheless, it seems that the YotaPhone is kicking into full gear and will be out before the year ends. It was rumored that the company will be supplying 70,000 units to Euroset, Russia’s largest mobile phone retailer, but other retailers are taking a more cautionary stance and will start with smaller batches.

The YotaPhone is expected to hit retail stores in November although no exact date has been given yet. Yota is aiming for a price tag of 20,000 rubles, roughly $612, but retailers estimate a price range of 22,000 to 25,000 rubles, around $673 to $765, quite a high price even for such a unique device.

Ramos unveils four Android tablets, powered by Intel
Sep 13th 2013, 03:03, by Juan Carlos Torres

Chinese manufacturers don’t exactly have a stunning reputation when it comes to consumer electronics, but that hasn’t stopped them from trying to fill the market with sometimes redundant and sometimes unique devices. One such manufacturer is Ramos who is announcing four new tablets which, unlike majority of Android tablets, are running on an Intel platform.

Of course, Intel-based Android tablets are nothing new, but they’re still so uncommon that the rare ones sometimes deserve a special mention. These four Ramos tablets are all running on the same Clover Trail+ processor that was just made available early this year. While definitely no Bay Trail, the dual-core Intel Atom Z2580 runs at clock speeds of 2 GHz, which might be good enough for the low price that it comes with.

Among the pack. the Ramos i8 offers the lowest price and lowest specs, with an 8-inch 1280×800 display and 1 GB of RAM. The i9 and i10 both have 1920×1200 displays with 9-inch and 10-inch screens, respectively. The i12 is the largest, sporting an 11.6-inch screen, but curiously comes at a lower resolution of 1920×1080. The i9, i10, and i12 all come with 2 GB of RAM.

The i9 is expected to be available starting September 15 for 1,199 yuan or around $196, while the other models still have no price tags and are scheduled to launch next month. No word on whether the tablets will be available worldwide, though if they will, they might be facing some stiff competition from companies like ASUS who are also producing affordable Intel-based Android tablets.
