Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play edition getting JWR66Y security update
Sep 13th 2013, 14:01, by Robert Nelson

The Google Play edition HTC One began receiving the JWR66Y security update earlier in the week. As of today that same JWR66Y security update has begun rolling out for the other Google Play edition handset — the Galaxy S 4. While this update is small and focusing on security, this all builds upon the earlier Android 4.3 release which began rolling out for both handsets in the beginning of August.

Anyway, similar to the JWR66Y for the HTC One, there isn’t much in terms of specifics for the Galaxy S 4. The update is smaller and has recently begun showing up on user devices. And as we often see, the rollout is likely staged which means you may or may not be seeing it on your handset just yet.

Otherwise, this same JWR66Y update arrived for other devices devices back in August. This one was initial detailed on the T-Mobile support pages for the Nexus 4. Needless to say, it also came available for other Nexus devices as well. Notably for the Galaxy Nexus as well as the 2012 model of the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablets.

As mentioned, this update is on the smaller side and even looking back to that T-Mobile announcement — we were seeing a file size of just a few MBs. With that, those carrying a Google Play edition Galaxy S 4 should be on the lookout for the update notification and otherwise, those feeling a bit impatient can head into the settings and try to force things.

T-Mobile 4G LTE now available in 154 markets
Sep 13th 2013, 13:37, by Robert Nelson

T-Mobile has provided a bit of a status update in terms of their 4G LTE network. It looks like T-Mobile LTE is now available for 180 million people across 154 markets. Of course, this is in addition to the HSPA+ availability which is now available for more than 228 million people.

In comparison, back in July the 4G LTE coverage was available for 157 million people and across 116 markets. Simply put, it looks like T-Mobile has been making some progress in terms of the LTE rollout. More to the point, it looks like they are making progress towards the end of year goal which was also announced back in July.

At that time T-Mobile had said they were looking to have 4G LTE coverage available for more than 200 million people across 200 markets by the end of 2013. There is still some ways to go before they reach that goal — namely 20 million more people and 46 additional markets. But again, it looks like they are on track to make it happen.

Otherwise, T-Mobile appears to moving forward with the UNCarrier approach and has been added new handsets on a fairly regular basis. The LG G2 arrived this week as well did the Moto X. Though, the Moto X is only available direct from Motorola at the moment.

T-Mobile will also have the Galaxy Note 3 smartphone and Galaxy Gear smartwatch available in early-October and recently began making some changes to the hotspot allowances for unlimited data customers. And nicely done, those changes were positive for the customer — higher data allowances.
