Acer Iconia A3 tablet unveiled, new color options for A1 and B1 tablets also detailed.
Sep 2nd 2013, 08:45, by Juan Carlos Torres

IFA hasn’t started yet but the ball seems to have already started rolling with Acer announcing its new 10.1-inch Iconia A3 tablet. The company has also revealed a set of new color options for its Iconia A1 and Iconia B1 tablets.

Launched at the beginning of this year, the Iconia B1 is an entry-level tablet sporting a 7-inch screen and a dual-core MediaTek MTK8317T processor running at 1.2 GHz. The Iconia A1, on the other hand, was announced last May and has a larger 7.9-inch screen and a faster 1.2 GHz quad-core MediaTek MTK8125 chip. The Iconia B1 will now be offered in oceanic blue and vermilion red while the Iconia A1 will come in white, smoky grey, and ivory gold color options.

The new Iconia A3 is intended to be the perfect entertainment partner. A 10.1-inch 1280×800 display gives the tablet a 16:10 aspect ratio that is perfect for viewing videos. The Dolby Digital Plus system and stereo speakers placed on both sides of the tablet is set to offer users an immersive audio experience. The A3′s 1.2 GHz quad-core cortex A7 processor, most probably also from MediaTek, gives the horsepower needed to deliver smooth video playback and mobile gaming, as well as a responsive user interface. The tablet is also riddled with connectivity options such as WiFi, 3G, Bluetooth 4.0, and a micro HDMI port for sharing media to other devices or screens. It also has configurations for 16 GB or 32 GB of internal storage, expandable with a microSD slot, to store your favorite music and videos.

The A3 is set to be available in Africa, Middle East, and Europe with a suggested retail price of 249 euros, roughly $330, for the WiFi only version while the 3G variant will have a 299 euro, around $400, price tag.

Huawei UltrasStick 3G add-on module for tablets announced
Sep 2nd 2013, 08:03, by Juan Carlos Torres

In what could be reminiscent of laptop PCMCIA cards of old, Huawei has officially unveiled its UltraStick 3G option. The thin card will be a way for tablet manufacturers to use a single design for both WiFi-only and 3G-enabled devices.

When a device manufacturer wants to add 3G capabilities to a WiFi only device, the common practice is to use a different chassis that provides a SIM card slot as well changing the System-on-Chip (SoC) to one that has the necessary chip for supporting such networks. Such a process involves additional manufacturing costs that some companies might not be able to afford. Huawei is offering a solution that will involve nothing more than sliding in something like a memory card.

The Huawei UltraStick is an add-on module that can add 3G capabilities to WiFi only tablets just like what 3G adapters or USB dongles do. But at a size of 65 mm x 35 mm x 3.3 mm, the UltraStick will not require a drastic redesign of a device. Manufacturers need only have a slot for the UltraStick on 3G-capable tablets and leave it empty for WiFi-only ones. The UltraStick supports networks such as HSUPA/HSDPA/WCDMA at 2100 (900/850) MHz and EDGE/GPRS/GSM at 1800 +900 MHz.

The first tablet to make use of this new 3G module will be the Chuwi V99x. The tablet features a 9.7-inch display with a 2048×1536 resolution, 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. The Chuwi V99x will also be running on Rockchip’s quad-core RK3188.

HTC senior officials arrested for suspected embezzlement and trade secrets theft
Sep 2nd 2013, 07:25, by Juan Carlos Torres

It seems that things might not so happy for the “Happy Telephone Company”, advertised recently in its viral marketing campaign. Two HTC high-ranking officials were ordered to be detained by the Taipei District Court on accusations of embezzlement and selling of commercial secrets.

Chien Chih-lin, vice general of research department, and Wu Chien-hung, research department director, were yesterday arrested for planning to start phone design companies in China using technology and knowledge stolen from HTC. The two are accused of violating Taiwan’s Trade Secrets Act and Securities Exchange Act among other things and were considered as flight risks.

This arrest is just a part of an on-going criminal investigation initiated by HTC itself against a number of its senior officials. Also arrested were HTC senior engineer Huang Hung-yi and senior manager Huang Kuo-ching, both of whom were earlier released on a bail of $10,000 and $3,400, respectively. According to HTC, these senior officials have tried to make reimbursements using fake receipts amounting to around $340,000. The suspects were also said to have stolen commercial secrets related to a new phone’s user interface, although no mention was made of HTC’s Sense interface for Android.

With the IFA trade show almost starting, HTC, who is expected to unveil the HTC One Max this week, could do with a bit less negative publicity. Although it would not reveal details due to non-disclosure clauses, the company is confident that the issue will not affect its operations.
