Nothing like some good old rivalry between chipmakers to spice up a dull Thursday afternoon.

Today, we have a confrontation between the two platforms that currently dominate computing, ARM and Intel. The British chip designer set up a comparison between a tablet powered by an unspecified (Tegra 3?) quad-core ARM Cortex A9 chip clocked at 1.4Ghz and a tablet running on a Intel dual-core  Clovertrail+ chip clocked at 1.6GHz. The two 10.1-inch tablets have the same display resolution and run the same version of Need For Speed Most Wanted for Android.

ARM didn't specify the rest of the specifications of the two devices, but assuming that they are similar, the difference in performance between the two chips is staggering.

However, Clovertrail+ is about to become a thing of the past. The first tablets running Intel's hot new Bay Trail chips are expected in the following weeks and performance previews suggest that ARM is finally in for some serious competition.
