AT&T HTC One VX update finally brings Jelly Bean
Aug 5th 2013, 02:31, by Juan Carlos Torres

In the highly competitive world of mobile devices, new models are churned out like crazy while older ones, even those just a year old, get left by the wayside. This is why there is much happiness, if not surprise, when a manufacturer, not to mention a carrier, releases an update that breathes new life into not-so-new devices. HTC and AT&T probably delivered some of that emotion to users of its HTC One VX when it rolled out a very significant update over the weekend.

HTC’s budget-friendly smartphone hit AT&T’s stores December last year. The HTC One VX’s hardware is definitely nothing to write home about. It has a dual-core Snapdragon S4 CPU topped with a 4.5-inch qHD display with a 540×960 resolution. It has 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage, expandable with a microSD card slot. It may not sound impressive, but for a price tag of $49.99 and a 2-year contract, it doesn’t sound too shabby either. And now it just might get even better.

Near the end of last year, a list was leaked detailing HTC devices that would soon be updated to Android’s Jelly Bean release. Included in the list is the HTC One VX, which originally runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. HTC and AT&T finally delivered on that over the weekend as it pushed an update to the phone’s firmware that brings it to Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean with Google Now support. Also included in the update is HTC’s Sense UI 4+, just one version shy of the latest Sense UI 5, as well as AT&T LTE enhancements.

The update, which comes at a whopping 629 MB, can be done automatically over the air or manually through a computer. HTC advises setting aside at least 20 minutes for the update, with at least 30% battery charge. As with any firmware update, especially one as big as this, backing up your data is highly recommended.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini for Verizon seen in photo
Aug 5th 2013, 01:51, by Juan Carlos Torres

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini has been out for a while and available in the UK and other markets. But so far, it has been out of reach for those in the US, a situation that might be changing soon. A leaked photo shows that Verizon is almost ready to make Samsung‘s mini-flagship available to its customers.

The 4.3-inch smartphone is certainly no Galaxy S4 but is quite impressive nonetheless, as we’ve experienced ourselves. Packing a 1.7GHz Snapdragon processor, 8 GB of internal storage, and 1.5 GB of RAM, the Galaxy S4 Mini is an option for the budget-conscious buyer who doesn’t want to skimp too much on features.

We first got news of the S4 Mini heading to Verizon when leaked information showed the S4 Mini passing the Bluetooth SIG certification with a model number SCH-i435. The prefix “SCH” is known to be used by Verizon for its Samsung devices. Now we have photo of the Galaxy S4 Mini with Big Red’s label on the device’s rear cover, which could mean that the device is almost ready to ship to Verizon’s stores.

There is still no new information regarding a release date, though one hopes it shouldn’t be long now. Pricing details are also not available yet. It is not known if the three new colors for the S4 Mini that was recently leaked will also be available in Verizon’s catalog.

HTC One Max revealed in leaked photos
Aug 5th 2013, 01:11, by Juan Carlos Torres

There’s a trend these days to release several editions of a new flagship smartphone to capitalize on the new brand. Samsung has release a number of variations of its latest Galaxy S4 and HTC has similarly launched a smaller version of its HTC One, the HTC One Mini, as well as different colors available only in select markets. It seems that HTC is not yet done with its iteration and is preparing to pack its flagship in a bigger package.

We have first reported on the rumors of a big-sized version of the HTC One last month, and now we are treated to some photos of this HTC One phablet. The HTC One Max is set to have a 5.9 inch screen, a full inch larger than that of the One. However, it is also supposedly using the same pixel resolution as the One, giving it a slightly lower DPI and making the One Max’s display potentially less sharp. Another upgrade that the HTC One Max will enjoy is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.3G GHz chip instead of the Snapdragon 600 of the original One.

Other aspects of the device will remain the same: 2 GB of RAM, a 4 megapixel (ultrapixel) rear camera and 2.1 megapixel front-facing camera, and the same dual speaker design. It will have 16 GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, and a 3300 mAh battery. It is rumored that Chinese markets will have models with dual SIM standby features but will also lose the ability to replace the battery.

The HTC One Max is set to be announced in September at the IFA trade show, probably at the same time that Samsung will be announcing its own latest phablet, the Galaxy Note III. It’s still a good one month away, so there’s time to decide whether to get the HTC One in small, medium, or large. Or maybe you’re one of the lucky people who can get the original HTC One in red, blue, or even gold!
