CyanogenMod adds 11 more devices to its roster, ready for Android 4.3 support
Aug 5th 2013, 08:04, by Juan Carlos Torres

Creating custom ROMs is no easy task, especially when you’ve become so famous that people expect your ROM to work on the majority of devices in the wild. And yet the people over at CyanogenMod seem to be able to work miracles as they just added 11 devices to its list of officially supported devices over the weekend.

CyanogenMod is one of the most popular custom ROM makers in the Android world. It has been untiring in its goal of giving the best and almost pure Android experience, without the modifications and addons that burden phones coming from manufacturers and carriers. In a lot of cases, CyanogenMod has become the only upgrade path for devices that have been abandoned by their manufacturers, providing updated software to old but still capable devices.

In a pair of Google+ postings, CyanogenMod has listed 11 devices that have joined its roster of supported devices. Included in this new list are a couple of Motorola smartphones like the Droid Razr and the Atrix and two Barnes and Noble Nook tablets. Also making it to the list is the Samsung Galaxy S4, which was just released a few months ago.

These devices will be able to run the latest CyanogenMod 10.1 release, which is based on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Aside from the Galaxy S4, all devices are also being prepared for testing the next release, CyanogenMod 10.2, which will be the first release based on recently announced Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

Spotify Browse playlist feature coming to Android
Aug 5th 2013, 07:51, by Juan Carlos Torres

When your own playlists just aren’t enough. That is exactly the situation for which Spotify’s new recommendation system, called Browse, is designed to address. Whatever your mood, whatever the time, whatever your situation, Browse will have the right playlist for you.

Spotify has been hard at work with its recommendation systems in its quest to help its users discover greater music. At first it relied on a simple social networking-based system for following other people, artists, and bands. Then it rolled out Discover which offered personalized suggestions using algorithms and data gathered through the years.

Now with Browse, Spotify is adding a human touch to its curation, to make sense of the thousands of playlists created by its users over the years. But instead of just relying only on algorithms, recommended playlists will be coming from different sources like your friends, Spotify’s own recommendations, and music experts. What you end up with are top recommendations not only for every genre, but also for every mood and every situation.

Browse will first be available on Android and iOS but will soon also appear on all of Spotify’s supported platforms. Spotify also hinted at a new Messages platform which is tipped to roll out next week, but first on its web player and only later for mobile.

Samsung "Galaxy Gear" smartwatch trademark filing confirmed
Aug 5th 2013, 06:57, by Juan Carlos Torres

In July, we mentioned a trademark filing by Samsung for the word GEAR in relation to clocks and have theorized on its obvious implication: a Samsung smartwatch. Now, thanks to a leaked photo, we have confirmation of that trademark filing, as well as a more definite name: Samsung Galaxy Gear.

Smartwatches have been the focus of much speculation in tech circles lately, ever since the Pebble smartwatch entered the scene. Naturally, Apple is rumored to be working on an “iWatch”. But even Microsoft is said to be working on a Surface-based wearable computer. Samsung has not been spared from this rash of online speculation, especially considering certain legal moves it has been making behind the scenes.

One such move is a concept filing submitted to the Korean design office for three possible designs of wearable computers making use of flexible displays. Early this year, Samsung revealed its YOUM branding for such flexible devices. Now, the latest piece of the puzzle falls into place as we see confirmation of Samsung’s trademark filing for the “Galaxy Gear” name.

As the name implies, this smartwatch would be part of the Galaxy line of Android-powered devices. Given an earlier leak about the Gear being unveiled at the same time as the Galaxy Note III, it wouldn’t be so far-fetched to speculate that the Galaxy Gear will be a companion accessory to the upcoming phablet and perhaps other Galaxy smartphones as well.
