LG Vu 3 unveiled, touts 4:3 aspect ratio again
Sep 23rd 2013, 06:31, by Juan Carlos Torres

LG has finally taken the covers off the rumored third, yes third, generation of its unmistakably unique line of large 4:3 aspect ratio smartphones. The LG Vu 3 grabs the power and features of the LG G2 and shoves it into an odd 5.2-inch form factor.

Like any smartphone of the past months, the LG Vu 3 runs on a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chip. The device also sports a 13 megapixel rear camera and speakers that can deliver high-quality 24 bit/192 KHz audio. LG is also boasting of the inclusion of Carrier Aggregation (CA) technology that will offer double the speeds of LTE-Advanced by combining different LTE-A frequencies.

But perhaps the most obvious differentiating factor of the Vu 3 is it’s screen size. Unlike almost all smartphones these days, the LG Vu 3 has a 5.2-inch display with a resolution of 1280×960 pixels, giving it an aspect ratio of 4:3, something that is rarely seen in mobile devices. LG claims that this gives the Vu 3 the same aspect ratio as A4 paper, making it perfect for reading content such as web pages and ebooks. And to carry that bookish metaphor even further, the Vu 3 includes a rubber rhodium stylus, putting it directly at odds with the Samsung Galaxy Note III.

The LG Vu 3 also possesses characteristics that we’ve seen and loved in LG’s current flagship, the LG G2. It features Knock On or Knock Knock for quickly locking and unlocking the phone, a Guest Mode for letting others use the smartphone while keeping your own profile and settings safe, and Plug & Pop for automatically bringing up options when plugging or unplugging earphones.

The Vu 3 even has its own set of unique covers, but unlike the G2′s QuickWindow, this new “QuickView” cases completely cover the device’s screen but uses a translucent material that lets users peek at information displayed in a variety of themes.

No pricing or availability date has been released, but the LG Vu 3 is expected to launch starting September 27 and well into the last quarter of the year.

Firefox Beta update brings in Guest Browsing, better Android integration
Sep 23rd 2013, 05:25, by Juan Carlos Torres

Mozilla, the company behind the popular cross-platform web browser, has just pushed an update to the Firefox Beta browser for Android. Among the changes included in this new version is support for guest users as well as new features and tools that improve the mobile browsing experience for both end users and developers as well.

The highlight of this new release, and probably of most interest to users, is the addition of Guest Browsing. This allows users to start a temporary and clean session when a friend or family member needs to use the browser as well. This feature ensures that the owner’s browsing history, content, tabs, and other personalized settings are protected from any modification, or from unauthorized eyes.

The update also improves Firefox’s integration with the Android platform. Users can now set an image as a wallpaper or contact photo directly from within the browser with a simple tap and hold gesture to bring up the appropriate context menu. Developers also get something in this release, with the addition of the remote debugging tool similar to the one available on the desktop. The Firefox team has also added support for locales such as Ukranian, Irish and Romanian, bringing the total number of supported languages to 27.

The new Firefox Beta is already available for download from Google Play Store. It should be noted that this is the beta version of the app and can actually be installed and used side-by-side with the stable Firefox browser for Android.

MY ASICS running app updated to version 2.0
Sep 23rd 2013, 04:54, by Juan Carlos Torres

Sports is one field where the best is never the best, a truth that the team behind the MY ASICS app has taken to heart as they developed the next version of their mobile app for runners. MY ASICS 2.0 for Android and iOS comes with improved training plan features that represents the team’s better than best efforts.

The MY ASICS mobile app is developed by ASICS, a Japanese company based in Kobe, Japan that specializes in athletic equipment and training. The app particularly focuses on running and marathon training, taking information gathered from research done by the company’s Institute of Sport Sciences to give the best training recommendations for runners. The app basically lets users view their running routes and schedules as well as keep track of performance.

The new version of the app will now let MY ASICS users plan their runs directly in the app without having to do it on a web browser instead. The app also gained some new smarts, automatically adapting running plans and future runs based on the runner’s performance as well as taking into account the right amount of rest needed for proper recovery.

The MY ASICS app is available for free on Google Play Store with support for 13 different languages including English, Japanese, Italian, German, and more. The MY ASICS service itself is available in a limited number of countries, but runners outside those countries are still free to sign up to gain access in their preferred language.
