Google's Vic Gundotra fuels the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 launch rumors
Oct 28th 2013, 14:57, by Robert Nelson

Vic Gundotra posts fairly regularly on his Google+ page. Sometimes he even shares some images that reveal minor details of unannounced products. That one came last year when he shared images taken with a Nexus 10 tablet ahead of the official announcement. More recently though, Gundotra took to G+ with a few comments that have once again fueled the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 rumors.

He began things late last night when he mentioned he “can’t sleep.” That comment also made mention of how this always happens to him on Sunday nights because “working at Google is that exciting.”

Can’t sleep. Always happens to me on Sunday nights. Yes working at Google is that exciting.

While the always happens bit of that comment would lead one to believe he was just talking aloud, he did follow up with another comment, and this one was directed at Sundar Pichai.

Keep in mind these comments could mean nothing more than what they are — simple comments. And while that may be the case, the rumor train has once again gone into overdrive. That follow up comment was Vic Gundotra asking is Sundar Pichai is also “struggling to fall asleep.”

Hey +Sundar Pichai you struggling to fall asleep too?

Basically, this makes it sound sort of like Google has something planned for today. Or maybe, for this week. Given we have yet to see the flood of event invites arrive for the media, we are not expecting Google to announce the Nexus 5 or Kit Kat today. If anything, maybe Google is planning to send those invitations out today for an event later in the week/month.

At present the rumors seem to be pointing towards November 1, though we have also heard the Nexus 5 would be available in the Play Store beginning on October 31.

That all being said, while it is fun to see the chatter spread over such simple comments, we do have to remember that nothing is official just yet. For that, we wait for the official word from Google and for Kit Kat to begin arriving on devices and the Nexus 5 to arrive in the Play Store.

Omate TrueSmart retail packaging pictured alongside October delivery update
Oct 28th 2013, 14:04, by Robert Nelson

The folks at Omate have recently shared some images of the TrueSmart retail packaging. There isn’t much here, the smartwatch seems to sit encased in a plastic housing. But along with the look at the packaging, there was also a bit of a status update in terms of the units that are expected to ship in October. Looking back to the Kickstarter page, these were the Developer Edition models.

The Omate team hasn’t specifically said these would not be arriving in October, but it is looking like they may be a bit late. The details were shared on the Omate Facebook page where they mentioned the government shut down and talked about how they are “a bit late.” The statement read as follows;

“We are a bit late for the October deliveries especially in US because the FCC process got badly affected by the Government shutdown but we are working hard to speed up the deliveries.”

At this point there wasn’t anything said in terms of other deliveries. Basically, at this point it looks like the November and December deliveries are still on track to arrive on time. Otherwise, touching back on the packaging and there was mention of how the Ocharger, Quick Start Guide and Obox “successfully passed” the teams torture tests this weekend.

The Ocharger was introduced as the “TrueSmart Desktop Charging Cradle” last week. This will be included with all units — at no additional cost. The cradle basically means Omate users will be able to plunk the watch down and secure the top to charge. And while not as simple as wireless charging, it should serve to make it a bit easier as compared to plugging and unplugging a cable each time.

While that was a bit of good news, this did follow the Play Store news. We suspect everyone who backed the TrueSmart has already seen this and is likely still a bit frustrated. But just to recap, at this time the watch will not be shipping with the Play Store. Or for that matter, any of the Google apps. There is still some hope for future updates though as the Omate team mentioned they are still working with Google.

NVIDIA SHIELD Android 4.3 update brings Console Mode and more
Oct 28th 2013, 13:30, by Robert Nelson

NVIDIA has announced and detailed the latest software update for the SHIELD. This one will be rolling out over-the-air and it will be arriving with several new features and lots more in terms of functionality. Just to begin with, this update will bump your handheld console to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. But there will also be Console Mode, a Gamepad Mapper and more.

Basically, this update is bringing support for quite a few more games — both streaming from your PC and also direct from the Play Store. Beginning first with the games coming from the PC. This feature is called GameStream and is one that is exiting beta. GameStream has been given an improved streaming experience.

To that point, GameStream has been optimized for game-speed WiFi with ultra-low latency that can now go up to 60 frames per second. And combining GameStream with Console Mode means the ability to stream games from your PC to the big screen in your living room at 720p. Shifting to the Console Mode and this also means the ability to play games and more on your television. This does require and HDMI connection, however the SHIELD can then be controlled from across the room using a Bluetooth controller.

Aside from using Console Mode with GameStream, it also allows the user to browse the web, play movies (in 1080p) and play Android games. The SHIELD has also been optimized to work with the Nyko PlayPad Pro wireless controller. The other aspect of the additional games comes in with the Gamepad Mapper mode. This means users can download games and begin playing using NVIDIA’s default profiles or create your own custom.

NVIDIA has said they have profiles available for “hundreds of top Android games.” Otherwise, this update also brought the console up to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Aside from a new version number for Android, this means the SHIELD now has support for goodies to include restricted profiles and improved notifications as well as the ability to move select games to the SD memory card freeing up some of the internal storage.
