Sony Honami surfaces in another round of leaked images
Jul 23rd 2013, 14:54, by Robert Nelson

The Sony Homani isn’t a stranger to leaks and as of today it looks like a few additional images have surfaced. While the authenticity of leaked images is always hard to judge, we can say they appear to match up fairly closely with earlier leaks. This latest round of Honami images appear to match the ones that appeared back in late-June as well as the renders that leaked last week.

What we can say based on these images is that we are looking at a Sony Xperia branded handset. Basically the obvious. As far as lining up with the earlier leaks, that points to the placement of the camera lens and flash sitting on the backside. There is also the speaker grill on the bottom and the dedicated camera button sitting on the side of the handset.

Much of the focus of the earlier Honami rumors have focused on the camera. Given that it is nice to see the dedicated camera button. Unfortunately though, we are not able to see anything in regards to the camera itself based on these images. Previous rumors have pointed towards the handset as having a 20 megapixel camera.

Other still unconfirmed specs for the Honami include a 5-inch 1080p display, 2.25GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and a 3030 mAh battery. The handset is expected to measure in a around 9mm in thickness and also come with a 1/2.3-inch 20.6MP Exmor RS BSI sensor, 28mm equivalent Sony G lens and LED flash.

Sony has previously said a successor to the Xperia Z would be announced later this year. The catch with that is Sony didn’t specify which device would be that successor. At the moment the rumors are suggesting the Honami may be that handset and that the announcement may come in September during IFA.

HTC Desire 500 unveiled as mid-level device for those in Taiwan
Jul 23rd 2013, 14:01, by Robert Nelson

As we had been expecting to happen this week, HTC has officially unveiled the Desire 500 smartphone. This handset will be arriving as a mid-range device and aimed at the “young generation.” Specifically, HTC is pushing the Desire 500 towards “college students and new graduates entering the job market.” But with that in mind, it looks like that group will be limited by the availability.

HTC has released the handset for those in Taiwan. The carrier will be Taiwan Mobile and the handset will be priced at NT$11,900. For those curious, that is just a few dollars shy of $400. The handset will be running Jelly Bean with Sense 5 and sporting a 4.3-inch display with a resolution of 800 x 480.

Other specs include a quad-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor with 1GB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, microSD card slot, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, GPS, 1800 mAh battery and 1.6 megapixel front-facing camera.

While the handset does have Sense 5, there are some items that are not included. For example, HTC did not include the UltraPixel camera and instead opted to pack on an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera. BoomSound was another item that didn’t make the cut with the Desire 500. Instead the handset has a single speaker on the backside. There is Beats Audio though.

This handset will enter the Desire lineup alongside the Desire 200 and 600 which were both introduced back in mid-June. Those handsets (as one may have guessed from the 200 and 600 model numbers) are sitting priced just below and just above the Desire 500. The Desire 200 is NT$4,990 and the Desire 600 is NT$12,900.

Sonos for Android update brings support for audio stored on your device
Jul 23rd 2013, 13:41, by Robert Nelson

Sonos has returned with another app update for Android users. While the focus with Sonos often seems to have you pulling music from the cloud, the focus of this update brings the ability to play audio files that are stored on your handset. This includes regular music tracks as well as any podcasts that you may have downloaded. Anyway, this update is already available by way of the Google Play Store and will bring the app up to version 4.1.1.

Once you have the app on your handset updated you will be able to see a new menu item called “This Mobile Device.” This will be found in the main menu and should be sitting alongside your other sources. This category is then further broken down with the expected categories including Artists, Albums, Genres, Tracks and Playlists as well as Podcasts.

A few quick items to point out, some podcasts that are downloaded with other apps will show in the regular track listings as opposed to the Podcasts listing. The example here was a few podcasts that were downloaded using the DoggCatcher app — they were available for play as regular audio tracks and not specifically as podcasts.

There is also one item dealing with music from the Google Play Store. The folks at Sonos have said;

“Tracks downloaded directly from the Google Play Store are not immediately available for playback. To play these tracks through Sonos, you must download them from Google Play to a computer, and then transfer them to your Android device's Music folder.”

But in the end, this is just another Sonos mobile app update. Or in other words, your Sonos system doesn’t need any update to make this all work. And as mentioned earlier, the latest Sonos app update is available by way of the Play Store. The current version of the Sonos app supports tablets and smartphones provided they are running Android 2.1 or later.
