Samsung officially announced the newest version of their Exynos 5 Octa processor today with a heavy emphasis on the graphics capabilities. For the first time in the industry, graphics will be driven by a six-core chipset, the ARM Mali-T628 gpu to be specific. Samsung claims the new Mali chipset will boost 3D graphic processing capabilities more than two times over the current Exynos 5 Octa chip. The new technology will also enable the gpu to handle some computational operations through General-Purpose computing on Graphics Processing Units (GPGPU). According to Samsung’s vice president of System LSI marketing, Taehoon Kim, “demand for richer graphic experiences is growing rapidly nowadays…in order to meet that demand from both OEMs and end users, we developed this processor which enables superb graphical performance without compromising power consumption.”

As far the primary cpu, the new Exynos 5420 will come loaded with four ARM Cortex-A15 processors running at 1.8 GHz and four ARM Cortex-A7 cores running at 1.3 GHz. Samsung says the new chips, when combined with their big.LITTLE implementation, will result in a 20% improvement in processing speed while optimizing power consumption.

When we reported earlier this week that the new Exynos 5 chip was coming, we indicated the possibility that it might become the chip used in the Samsung Galaxy Note III. Samsung indicates in their official announcement that mass production of the new chip is scheduled to start in August, so there is a good chance it could be used in the Galaxy Note III which is supposed to be officially announced in September.

To help promote the Exynos 5420, Samsung has also launched a sweepstakes giveaway on Twitter. Users who use the hashtag #ExynosEvolved in a tweet will be entered to win an Exynos swag bag in a drawing to be held each week. Some of the swag bags will include either a Galaxy Tab 3 8.0, a Galaxy S 4 Zoom, or a Samsung Chromebook. The sweepstakes is only open to residents of the U.S., Canada (excluding Quebec) or the U.K. and you must be 18 to enter. A link to the full rules is included below.
