Motorola DROID ULTRA detailed with 5-inch 720p display, 8-core processor
Jul 23rd 2013, 17:01, by Cory Gunther

Earlier today the folks from Verizon and Motorola announced the new family of Motorola DROID smartphones. Those being the DROID Mini, the DROID ULTRA, and the DROID MAXX. While we’re still learning all the information live as Verizon shares the details, the specs have finally been revealed and they aren’t quite as top-tier as many were expecting. Although the new 8-core processor sounds interesting. Read on for the details.

The DROID ULTRA and DROID MAXX will both come rocking 5-inch 1280 x 720p HD displays, and just like last year are essentially the same device with the MAXX coming in a bit thicker. Even with a huge 3,500 mAh battery in the MAXX, we still come in at 8.5mm thin. Then the Mini will be just like the DROID M last year, coming with a 4.3-inch edge-to-edge display.

The devices will come rocking Qualcomm processors, from what we understand, but sadly they haven’t yet shared any of the details. Reason being, is I don’t think anyone at Verizon really knows. However, Motorola has unveiled a new “X8 8-core computing system” with the DROIDs. Stating 2 app and regular cores, 4 GPU cores for graphics, and then one for language and another for learning. This will be used for gestures, and things like saying “Ok, Google Now” to wake up the smartphones. Pretty nifty. Here’s what their page says, and this is all.

– 1.7 GHz Dual Core with Quad–Core Graphics, attention hub, & 2GB of RAM
– 4FF preinstalled SIM
– Memory: 16GB on board memory + 2GB RAM

(32GB with MAXX)

Sounds like an improved and custom Snapdragon S4 Pro here with additional cores for their “X8 computing system” but again, Verizon and Motorola haven’t confirmed. We’re seeing 2GB of RAM, and according to the details 16GB of storage on board. Then these rock the same 10 megapixel “Clear Pixel” camera we’ve heard about with the X, but more on that will come later.

The 3,500 mAh battery inside the MAXX is reportedly capable of delivering 48 hours of battery life with average use, which is pretty darn impressive. Once we’re able to get hands-on with these devices we’ll be sure to get all the details, but for now enjoy the few available images below.

Verizon DROID ULTRA, MAXX and Mini arriving August 20
Jul 23rd 2013, 16:51, by Robert Nelson

At an event taking place this morning, Verizon Wireless has unveiled three new DROID branded handsets. This new DROID lineup will consist of the DROID ULTRA, DROID MAXX and DROID Mini. Basically, it is looking like these three new handsets will be replacing the RAZR lineup that was revealed last fall.

That aside though, Verizon is going to begin accepting pre-orders for all three models today with the actual availability date set for August 20th. Of course, perhaps more important here is the pricing. These prices all reflect a two-year agreement so with that in mind, the DROID MAXX will be $299, the DROID ULTRA will be $199 and the DROID Mini will be $99.

The DROID lineup is touted as being “thinner, lighter and stronger.” The Mini brings the focus on the compact design and is said to be “compact without compromise.” The MAXX is about battery life and is said to be able to top out at up to 48 hours. The ULTRA is about being thin and is flaunting that with a thickness of just 7.18mm.

Of course, the MAXX is also on the thin side with a measurement of 8.5mm. Aside from the hardware, Motorola has added some goodies called Active Display, Quick Capture and Droid Zap. Those last two are camera and image related with the Quick Capture doing just what the name would imply — capture images quicker. The Droid Zap is about sharing and will allow for image sharing with a simple swipe.

That all begin said, the pre-orders will be available by way of the Verizon Wireless DroidDoes website and it is looking like these handsets will come with a few perks. During the event Verizon made mention about how each of these three handsets will get six months worth of Google Play Music for free as well as an invite to play Ingress.

Verizon announces three new Motorola DROID smartphones
Jul 23rd 2013, 16:21, by Cory Gunther

Just as expected, this afternoon Verizon has just announced three brand new smartphones to grace their lineup for the rest of the year. That being the new Motorola DROID smartphones to continue with that successful line. Just like last year we have three brand new models, with one being the DROID Mini, a regular DROID ULTRA, and of course the massive 3,500 mAh battery packing DROID MAXX. More details below.

Verizon just announced all the details live on stage in New York City, and they’re still busy talking up the DROID brand, the new smartphones, and of course, Verizon Wireless and their 4G LTE networks. Looking at the images that have been provided the new DROID lineup is impressive to say the least, and extremely thin, but we don’t have final specs quite yet.

Just like all the leaks the new DROIDs have a beautiful Kevlar shell protecting them, and this time it even curves around to the front fascia of the devices. Verizon is also touting a new 8-core “X8 Mobile Computing” system in which these devices use the regular quad-core processors, then a few more cores for contextual processing and natural language cores. We have a feeling there will be plenty of gesture and voice controls on board.

It appears we’ll be enjoying Android 4.2 Jelly Bean here, and the devices rock the same hands-free camera features and new UI we’ve seen in the latest Motorola X leaks. We’re expecting at least a Snapdragon 600 and 2GB of RAM in both the ULTRA and MAXX, but Verizon’s taking their sweet time with all the details. And instead talking up the Kevlar coating and new features.

Stay tuned for pricing and a full rundown of all the specs regarding the three new DROID smartphones.

CyanogenMod merges Voice Plus messaging app into nightlies
Jul 23rd 2013, 15:43, by Robert Nelson

A few weeks back we starting seeing something messaging related that would be coming to CyanogenMod. This was for those using Google Voice and was originally sporting the codename of Babel (just like Hangouts). Anyway, in a bit of a status update, Koushik Dutta has announced the new name and perhaps more important — that this project has been merged with the nightlies.

Screen-Shot-2012-12-17-at-12.15.00-PM-540x3691

The app is called Voice Plus and basically means the user will be able to route all incoming Google Voice text messages to the standard Android messaging app. Or for that matter, any messaging app that you can set as your default on Android. Anyway, as mentioned this has been merged into the nightly builds, however we have yet to get any idea when it will arrive in a stable build.

With that in mind, the Voice Plus setup is simple and to the point. You will be required to keep the default Google Voice app installed on your handset, however once the Voice Plus setup has been activated all messages will be routed accordingly. The activation process is basically just launching the Voice Plus app at which time you will be able to pick the account you want to use.

From that point all incoming text messages will route to the default messaging app on your handset. The Voice Plus app is also where you will go if you want to reverse the process. That being the case, it would just be a matter of re-launching the app and choosing the disable option.

Sadly though, while this solves the issue of having to use the less-than-ideal Google Voice app for messaging it unfortunately doesn’t help the lack of MMS support.
