Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Student Edition arrives as a keyboard and dock bundle
Jul 22nd 2013, 14:51, by Robert Nelson

Getting a slight jump on the back to school season, Samsung has officially released a “Student Edition” of the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 tablet. This is essentially a bundle pack that includes the tablet along with a desktop dock and Bluetooth keyboard. And in addition to the bit of extra hardware that ships with the tablet, Samsung also has some app related perks for those planning a purchase.

Of course, some of these go back to perks that are included with the tablet when purchased by itself. For example, the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 has a built-in IR blaster which will allow you to use it as a remote for your television. There is also a pre-loaded copy of Polaris Office, a Dropbox offer with 50GB of free storage for a year and three months of Hulu Plus for free (for new Hulu customers).

Perhaps more important though, Samsung touts this Student Edition bundle as being able to save you “more than $100″ when these items are all purchased individually. With that in mind, the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Student Edition is priced at $349.99 and available with Samsung. The Student Edition is also available with several retailers including Best Buy, Amazon, Wal-Mart, Toys 'R' Us, BJ's, P.C. Richard & Son and Office Max.

Samsung has also said the white version of the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is available in the US for the first time. All said and done, this sounds like a fairly decent option for those who can get by without a full notebook computer. Or for that matter, for those who want a tablet setup in addition to their current notebook or desktop setup.

Aside from the desktop dock and Bluetooth keyboard, the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 will bring a familiar set of specs. The tablet has Android 4.1 Jelly Bean along with a 10.1-inch display with a 1280 x 800 resolution, VGA quality front-facing camera, 3 megapixel rear-facing camera, 16GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot and a weight of 1.28 pounds.

T-Mobile JUMP and Asurion subscribers getting Lookout Premium
Jul 22nd 2013, 14:17, by Robert Nelson

The Lookout Security & Antivirus app is available for free and also as a Premium offering. For many the free account may be enough to meet your needs, however the Premium version does have a few worthwhile features. With that in mind, it looks like Lookout Premium is now being included for T-Mobile users that go with the JUMP upgrade program.

Well, specifically, T-Mobile customers using the JUMP program as well as those enrolled in the Asurion Premium Handset Protection (PHP) program. If you are a current Lookout customer you should be getting an email notification with details, however if you are not already a Lookout user now seems like a good time to give it a second look.

Details coming from Lookout mention how they have partnered with T-Mobile “to provide mobile security as part of their insurance packages.” Further details from Lookout tell the story about how the Premium level will be free of charge, that the update will happen automatically and you will “continue to receive Lookout Premium services for the duration of your insurance plan.”

Lookout, as a free offering has goodies including app scanning as well as continuous over-the-air protection against viruses, malware, adware and spyware. The free version of Lookout also includes a find my phone option. This portion brings the ability to locate your lost device on a map, have it sound an alarm and even send an email with a picture and location when someone incorrectly enters the passcode three times.

Shifting over to the Premium level coverage and that includes contact backups and the ability to restore. Other Premium features include photo and call history backup (and restore), safe browsing which blocks URLs that are considered dangerous and even the option to remotely lock and/or wipe the device should you find it lost or stolen and are not able to recover it. Lookout Premium would normally run you $2.99 on a monthly basis or $29.99 on an annual basis.

Samsung Developer Conference promises to be a "major" event
Jul 22nd 2013, 13:54, by Robert Nelson

Samsung looks ready to make a bigger move into the developer space, one that will have them following in the lines of some of the other big players. The company has announced the Samsung Developer Conference which will kick-off on October 27th. The event will take place in San Francisco, California and it one that Samsung is promising to be “major.”

More to that point, Samsung has said this conference will be more than just mobile, that it “will be a major, Samsung-wide, cross-product (multi-screen) developer event.” This event will run from October 27th through October 29th and while registration is not yet open, Samsung has setup a teaser page where you can pre-register your interest.

Engage with industry leaders.
Collaborate with fellow developers.
Learn about new Samsung tools and SDKs. Create what's next.

Otherwise, the only other details were how Samsung is planning to open the full registration sometime “later this summer.” At that time those interested will be able to get more details about the event so better plans can be made. Until then, what we currently have is Samsung planning to kick-off an annual developer event this October.

That all being said, we cannot help but wonder which event this Samsung Developer Conference will be most alike — Google I/O, Apple WWDC or Microsoft’s BUILD. That thought aside, it does seem refreshing to see Samsung taking another step deeper with developer relations.

Nexus 7 2 turns up in Best Buy weekly circular with July 30 launch date
Jul 22nd 2013, 13:26, by Robert Nelson

Late last week we saw a retail leak coming by way of Staples suggesting the Nexus 7 2 would be available beginning on July 31st. While we have yet to learn the official release date from Google, it looks like this week has begun with another leak from yet another retail store. This latest is coming from Best Buy and has the tablet coming available a day earlier than with Staples.

Anyway, this latest comes by way of a leaked Best Buy weekly circular that is said to be prepped to run the week of July 28th (next Sunday). As you can see in the image, it has the Nexus 7 listed as being available on Tuesday. Based on the calendar, that would have the Nexus 7 available with Best Buy beginning on July 30th. The Staples leak suggested the availability date as July 31st.

That being said, it is entirely possible that Best Buy will have it available on the 30th and that Staples will have it available on the 31st. Of course, it seems more likely that one (or possibly both) of these retailers may need to make some date adjustments. And just as a reminder, that Google event is scheduled to take place on July 24th so it seems both of these retailers as well as any others will have some time to prep for the launch.

Otherwise, the only other tidbits coming from the Best Buy circular show the tablet as having a 1920 x 1200 display and 16GB of internal storage. The price is shown as $229.99, which is inline with earlier leaks. Those earlier leaks also have a 32GB model coming in at $269.

Some of the other still unconfirmed specs include Android 4.3 along with a 7-inch display, quad-core 1.5GHz processor, 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera and 5 megapixel rear-facing camera. There was also talk of the tablet having support for wireless charging and a “Slim Port” that will allow for 1080p HD video output. We had also seen talk of the Nexus 7 arriving with 4GB of RAM.
