Customized Moto X ship times "may vary" due to high demand
Aug 23rd 2013, 20:14, by Cory Gunther

Today is Motorola day with the custom Moto X Maker website and the official launch of their new smartphone. It’s readily available in AT&T stores nationwide, and you can snag one as we speak or head to their site and customize your own. Originally Motorola promised 4 day waits for the custom version, but last night a blog post might be warning of a delay, already.

Motorola posted a quick blog post last night stating the Moto Maker site and X smartphone were officially here, tomorrow. Basically giving us a few additional details before the device launched and service went live today. Near the end of the post they appear to already be preparing for the worst, and warning of possible shipping delays.

Don’t get us wrong, what Motorola and Google are doing is the first of its kind. It’s a big step. Allowing buyers to completely customize the color, accents, wallpaper, and even boot screen of their smartphone. It certainly isn’t easy, but they’ve promised quite a bit. They already temporarily removed the engraving option, and now are claiming high demand might cause that 4-day shipping window to be extended a little longer. Here’s the quote:

We'll be working hard to get your customized Moto X to you as quickly as possible. We expect that because of high demand, initial shipping times may vary. But we will get that down to 4 days or less as soon as we possibly can. We'll also be adding digital printing in the future, so you can include a personal message on the back of your Moto X.”

Which basically means the initial launch might have so much attention and demand, that their shipping times might slip a little longer than four days. Rest assured though, because they’ll get it down to 4 days rather quickly and those ordering won’t have to wait very long. Hopefully everything gets ironed out quick, and then customizations arrive for Verizon and other carriers.

If you’re interested in customizing your own, or the Skip accessory, check out our hands-on and unboxing. Who’s getting their own custom Moto X ordered today or this weekend? Is anyone excited about this phone?

Omate TrueSmart will ship with Google Play Store access
Aug 23rd 2013, 19:11, by Robert Nelson

The Omate TrueSmart watch launched on Kickstarter on August 21 and quickly reached the goal amount of $100,000. In fact, the campaign is currently sitting at $263,791 with 27 days remaining. With that in mind the folks behind the smartwatch have offered the first status update. This one talks a bit about production, but has some good news in terms of app availability.

Omate-TrueSmart_SLASHGEAR_02

How about we start with the app availability portion. In this case they are confirming Google Play Store access will be included. This seems to have been a sticky issue with Omate who were concerned about offering it due to the size and resolution of the display. Basically, it seems to reason that not all apps will run perfectly. Otherwise, the watch will launch with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

While Play Store access will be included by default, there is also still some thought going into another app store. The talk here is to be able to highlight apps that have been tweaked for the TrueSmart. Omate has said this would allow them to “help Developers highlight and promote their TrueSmart / Smartwatch apps (or Smartwatch version of their apps).”

Shifting over to the talk of production, here Omate has said the “funding has helped us [them] start production preparations already.” Basically it looks like they are still on track for a delivery as originally promised. The Kickstarter page had an estimated delivery date of November 2013 and this update mentioned that “the Omate Team is focusing on Time-To-Market and is dedicated to deliver the TrueSmart on time and on quality – Developers in October and Users in November.”

This news aside, there is still plenty of time to back the project should you be interested in a TrueSmart — a watch that is being billed as “smartwatch 2.0.” The lowest early bird level has sold-out but there are still some Special #2 slots available at $189. Once those are filled the watch price will increase to $199. And as for retail, the Omate TrueSmart is expected to sell for $299 when it comes available for retail sales.

Moto Maker Moto X unboxing and Skip accessory hands-on
Aug 23rd 2013, 19:10, by Cory Gunther

The custom Moto X from AT&T and their limited-time exclusive Moto Maker site has just arrived, and it sure is pretty. Being able to fully customize the color, accents, and such is more exciting than we thought. As you all know, the custom site and AT&T Moto X went up today, and below you’ll be able to check one of ours out in a quick unboxing as well as see that Skip accessory in action.

The Moto X from AT&T is available right now, as we speak, so run down to your nearest store and grab one. If you’d like to customize it they’ll give you a code for the Moto Maker site, and you’ll be able to have your ways with it in no time. For more details on that entire experience check out our Moto Maker customization hands-on.

It looks like AT&T got an exclusive on the phone launch too, as we’ll see developer editions and the other carrier version in a few days. So, now that we’ve finished the entire customization process and chose a beautiful red and orange color pattern, Motorola built and assembled the device and it arrived within four days, which is their promise. Sadly they no longer offer the engraving option, but below is a quick video unboxing of the custom X.

As you saw above, the customizations are pretty impressive looking. The bright orange accents on red is pretty unique, if you ask us, and certainly a nice touch. Since we’ve already seen plenty of the Moto X smartphone in our full review (and the custom one is no different, just prettier) we want to focus on the Skip accessory. Which if you need to know more click here, although the video above should of explained everything.

The Moto Skip is an accessory for the X, but it’ll probably work just fine on the DROIDs too. Being an NFC enabled device that can clip anywhere and instantly unlock your device. No need to enter a pin, or pattern, just tap your NFC enabled Moto X to the skip as you saw in the video, and it unlocks instantly. This could be useful, and is free for Moto Maker users, but we doubt regular customers will buy one.

The Skip also comes with three more NFC tags they called Moto Skip Dots, that you can place all around the house should you choose. Maybe one in your car, the office, or bedroom. It’s a nice touch and adds another level of simplicity to using your device daily.

So far we’re loving the new custom Moto X. The backside has a slightly different feel. It’s a little softer and more comfortable. Which is great considering the X was already one of the most comfy phones we’ve used to date. There appears to be no build quality issues and it’s top notch. We have another custom X on the way and will update with plenty of pictures soon enough.

Who picked up the Moto X, and if you haven’t yet but are planning to, will it be an AT&T Moto Maker customized version?

Verizon Max coming for "concerned" unlimited data users
Aug 23rd 2013, 18:38, by Robert Nelson

Verizon has had their Share Everything plans available for more than a year now, but there are still some that have been holding their now-grandfathered-in unlimited data plan. Big Red is also getting ready to have the Verizon Edge upgrade plan available. That will arrive on August 25th and as that comes available Verizon has what they are calling a special offer for those who are planning to use Edge and are “concerned about losing their unlimited plan.”

acIMG_8539-540x34721

This offer is called Verizon Max and the specifics are coming by way of a leak at the moment. While we would normally consider this to be firmly in the rumor category, we have seen a little bit direct from Verizon. Or more specifically, the @VZWSupport had tweeted (then deleted) a message about how they have a 6GB/$30 promotion for customers with unlimited data.

verizon-max

Anyway, aside from waiting for an official announcement from Verizon — it looks like the specifics have been revealed. Whether this proves to be a good option for anyone will come down to a personal decision, but with that in mind here is what Verizon Max will bring; 6GB of data for $30 per month or 8GB of data with mobile hotspot for $50 per month. Both of these options have overages being billed at $10 per GB.

These are non-shared data plans and it looks like they will only be available for a limited time. Verizon will be pushing these as a “data feature that offers large amounts of data at affordable prices.” The leaked document also goes on to mention how these are “some of the best data offers to date.”

It looks like the Verizon Max plan offers will be available on Sunday August 25th — the same day as the Verizon Edge upgrade offer becomes available.
