LG G2 pre-orders arrive in the US from Negri Electronics
Aug 14th 2013, 17:38, by Cory Gunther

If you like what you saw from LG and their newly announced 5.2-inch quad-core powerhouse G2 smartphone then we have some good news. After announcing the smartphone earlier this month we learned it would become available late August or early September. However, those wanting to ensure their own, Negri Electronics has the unlocked US model available for pre-order today.

The LG G2 is the new flagship smartphone for the company, and they have high hopes for the device. With a stunning and world’s thinnest 5.2-inch full HD display, Qualcomm’s 2.3 GHz quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM, a 13 megapixel camera and more on board it’s quite the looker.

And we can’t forget the biggest feature, at least to LG, which is the backside touch controls. Also known as a power and volume button on the rear instead of the sides. The button placement is a bit unconventional, but to be honest it does make sense in a way. So how can you get your own? From Negri Electronics.

LG confirmed a late August to early September release date on the 4 major US carriers, but we have no exact date. That was followed up with a promise of 100 different carriers globally within 90 days of the announcement, so we should know plenty extremely soon. For those who don’t want to wait for details or a carrier, Negri has the unlocked model up for pre-order as we speak. The only issue is it won’t ship til the end of September, so a carrier could get it first, and it’s a little over $600. It’s your call.

MoDaCo.SWITCH Beta 9 arrives with Android 4.3
Aug 14th 2013, 16:56, by Robert Nelson

MoDaCo.SWITCH has been going through the beta phase since it was originally introduced. At this time the most current that is available over-the-air is beta 8, however beta 9 has landed and is now available as a manual download. The key here, the MoDaCo.SWITCH beta 9 brings Android 4.3.

While beta 9 is only available as a manual download at the moment, it will arrive as an over-the-air download but for now it was said “further testing” was needed. Anyway, along with the release of beta 9 comes the warnings. In this case it was said that you should make sure to perform a full backup and flash when in the Sense mode.

Venturing into the MoDaCo user forums and it looks like some have already updated. Early reports are pointing towards users needing to pay attention to the Google account sync status and how persistent notifications have been disabled. And as we have seen with Android 4.3 in general, those updating will not have root for now.

Bottom line here, while any beta can be considered on the cutting edge, it looks like beta 9 takes you one step closer to that edge. Simply put, it may be worthwhile for some to wait a bit before moving on from beta 8. Aside from the release of SWITCH for the HTC One, there had also been a Galaxy S 4 related announcement.

The Galaxy S 4 edition of SWITCH went up as an Indigogo campaign (that has since funded). But with that in mind, the campaign still has a little more than 60 hours remaining — you know, just in case you wanted to slip in just before things officially wrapped up. The campaign has several pledge levels available and still reflects a delivery date of August.

Nexus 7 LTE coming soon as device appears in China
Aug 14th 2013, 16:54, by Cory Gunther

When Google announced the brand new and much improved Nexus 7 last month many were excited to see a 4G LTE capable model would be coming soon for only $349. The WiFi tablet is readily available already in multiple regions although Google hasn’t said a word regarding the LTE edition. However one lucky user in China got exactly that while ordering the regular model.

Today multiple details and images have surfaced of what appears to be the 4G LTE capable Nexus 7 over in China. The report mentions the user simply purchased a regular 32GB WiFi edition, and to his surprise when opening it up he received the LTE model by accident. Can’t we all be that lucky?

So what does this mean? Well nothing at the moment, but it’s a sign that the 4G LTE capable Nexus 7 is already out and in the wild, Google and ASUS have been busy manufacturing them, and hopefully we’ll get an official release date any day now. It’s safe to say the LTE model will hit the US and Google Play imminently.

A few Chinese sites such as Baidu managed to get multiple photos of the device, so this leak seems pretty legit right about now. Even if that is a Moto X in the pictures, making us think this isn’t your average customer.

So while Google hasn’t released an official release date for the 4G LTE equipped Nexus 7, we have a feeling it’s coming up quick. Hopefully within the next few weeks so stay tuned.

AT&T details the latest 4G LTE expansions
Aug 14th 2013, 16:03, by Robert Nelson

AT&T has announced the latest 4G LTE expansion. This time around we are seeing new coverage and expanded coverage across Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, North Dakota, Ohio and Virginia. For the most part this latest LTE expansion includes one market per state, but regardless, it does mean faster speeds.

With that, this expansion brings 4G LTE coverage for those in Rockford, Illinois; Williston, North Dakota; Youngstown-Warren, Ohio and Farmville, Virginia. There were are few markets added in Minnesota. Those include Fairmont, Owatonna and Rochester.

In addition, coverage has been added for those in the Saginaw and Bay City areas of Michigan. Looking to the New York coverage and we see an expansion in and around the Niagra Falls area. AT&T has offered quite a bit of detail on this market and has it all broken down as follows;

  • Niagara Falls: Niagara Falls State Park, Niagara Falls Observation Tower, Niagara Falls Boulevard, Niagara Thruway (Interstate 190), Niagara Falls International Airport and terminals, Rainbow Bridge, Buffalo Avenue (Route 384), Walnut Avenue (Route 62), Beach Ridge, Amherst Veterans Canal Park, Hennepin Park, Hoffman, Jayne Park, LaSalle Expressway, Ninety First Street Park, Seventieth Street Park, West Canal County Park, Love Canal, Mario Park, Military Boulevard (Route 265), Nashville, Gluck Park, Goat Island, Main Street (Route 104), John Day Boulevard, DeVeaux Woods State Park, Robert Moses Parkway, Devils Hole State Park, and Hyde Park Boulevard (Route 61).
  • Lewiston: Academy Park, Earl W. Brydges Art Park, Kiwanis Park, Niagara Thruway (Interstate 190), Ridge Road (Route 104), Robert Moses Parkway, and Upper Mountain Road.
  • Northern Grand Island: Bedell Road, Bedell Road Park, Buckhorn Island State Park, East-West Park Road, Grand Island Boulevard (Route 324), Niagara Thruway (Interstate 190), Sandy Beach, and Veterans Park.

Bottom line here, this means now would be a good time for those in any of these markets to start considering an LTE capable device for their next upgrade. AT&T has more than a few LTE smartphones and tablets to choose from including the Galaxy S 4 and Galaxy S 4 Active as well as the HTC One.

We have yet to see a release date, but AT&T is expected to launch the Moto X sometime later this month. Otherwise, those who happen to be in one of these markets with an LTE device already in hand — now seems like a perfect time to begin taking advantage of these new speeds.
