Incipio never fails to offer a variety of cases, and even variations on their own designs. Such is the case with the Feather Shine, which builds on their popular Feather line of cases. The Feather shine incorporates the thin, light profile of the Feather with an awesome metallic-like appearance.
The Feather Shine capitalizes on Incipio’s “barely there” case by adding an aluminum-style outer coating to give it that extra dash of pizzazz. For the most part, the Shine is a clone of the Feather, but there are a few minor differences that are important when distinguishing the two. The most obvious of these is the design, but I noticed a few more.
Sadly, the Feather Shine is only offered in two colors, where the Feather is sold in four. The Shine can be bought in Black or Silver, although the Black doesn’t have nearly as much actual metallic quality as the Silver does.
While the Feather Shine technically weighs the same as the Feather (0.5 oz.), it feels just a tad heavier. Maybe this is due to the way the weight is distributed in the Shine, or maybe I’m just going crazy. Either way, the weight difference, imaginary or not, is not noticeable in the pocket.
One of my biggest issues with the Feather was the lack of protection around the corners of the phone. The Feather Shine doesn’t fix this completely, but it does wrap around the corners a bit more than its dull counterpart. It’s still not enough to make me feel comfortable enough in the drop protection, but it’s a slight improvement.
The only other difference comes in the grip. The Feather Shine offers a bit less grip than the Feather, because the shiny metal-like surface is more slippery than the soft-touch back of the original Feather. Luckily, the difference wasn’t enough to make me drop the phone in my week of use. It did slip around a bit, but for the most part I was able to use it as I normally would and hold onto it fairly well.
In the end, I like Incipio’s commitment to giving users a range of case choices. The Feather Shine offers the same slim profile and minimal weight with a different look and feel. That being said, I’m not sure that the added appearance is worth an additional $5, but to each his own. You can grab this metallic minimal case from Incipio for $29.99.
