Update - 229

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 02:15 PM PDT

We're going to go out on a limb and assume that most of you readers already own at least one Android device.  Be it a smartphone, tablet, or both, we're willing to bet that you've got something in your pocket or on the desk, right now.  Chances are that some of you are reading this on said Android product.  We're also going to wager that most of you are a teenager or older.
We got to wondering today, just how young is too young to give someone an Android phone?  We took to Twitter and Facebook to see what you thought about smartphones and the wee ones and here's a collection of some of your thoughts so far.
I don't think its so much a matter of age as it is a matter of attitude and maturity and taking the time out to spend with them about proper use of it and the various apps. - Darren C.
I personally don't think children should have cell phones at all until 13 and then ONLY basic phones for emergencies. But that's just me... - Dakota S.C.
My lil girl is 11 and has my old EVO. She has great grades and is very well behaved. Also, very responsible. - James E.
My son, 4, has my old Droid. He uses it maybe 3-4 hours max a week and has a bunch of educational games on it along with Angry Birds and a few puzzle games. There is no cell service for the phone and I have all but his apps locked down along with wifi so he can only access the content he is supposed to. So basically he uses it like a mini tablet. - Christopher King
I got a phone in 8th grade and that is only because my brother and sister got one for High School. We had to pay for it ourselves, as it should be. It taught me responsibility. - Kyle Alan Stanton
When they can pay for it themselves! - vwauditech
It all comes down to responsible handling and show of care. My 3yr old treats my Nexus with respect and gentleness. - GadgetLifeTN

Now it's your turn!

We'd love for you to weigh in on the discussion: How young is too young in your eyes?  Is there a clear answer?  Hardly.  However, as some of you move into a new handset this year, will you be giving your old one to your child or kid down the street?

I just swung by the US Patent and Trademarks office, as I am often wont to do, and found a few new Samsung filings that might be fun to watch.  These are new since the last time I checked and, from what I can gather, have not been tied to anything devices yet.
Obviously it's unclear exactly what these trademark applications will ultimately lead to, especially given Samsung's broad range of products.  Will these be flagship devices to be announced at CTIA in May or could these just be alternate versions of existing models that end up on carriers such as Cricket, MetroPCS, and Boost Mobile?  The Galaxy Pocket sounds like a similar product recently announced for international crowds.  Might this dimnuitive smartphone be arriving stateside or is it a Samsung Android-based camera?
Or could these actually be carrier-branded versions of the Galaxy S III just hanging around?
As always, if you have anything to add here, I would love to hear it.

New details have emerged for the 'is-it-real-or-not' Nexus tablet which add weight to the argument that it's actually happening.  According to a "senior employee at a supply chain company" the tablet is already finished up and ready to roll.  Given that rumors have tapped the tablet with a May/June launch date it makes sense that the product would be going into production, maybe finished.
It is also being reported that Google and Asus have scrapped the Tegra 3 quad-core chipset in favor of a lower-cost dual-core chipset.  Why?  Google wants to come in under that $200 price point that people are expecting for 7-inch tablets now that the Kindle Fire changed things up.  Taking advantage of volume pricing, a dual-core processor will bring the cost down quite a bit.  The new rumor is that the presumed Nexus device will run $149.99 and that it is a re-branded version of the ASUS MeMo 370T.
Assuming all this to be true, what say you about a 7-inch Nexus tablet with a $150 price tag?  Will you jump all over it or do you still not see a need for a tablet?

Basketball and football (soccer) fans brace yourself, EA Sports has hit us with a 1-2 punch this week, releasing FIFA 12 and NBA Jam in the Google Play Store.  While some of you may be too young to remember sitting around a Super Nintendo to play the basketball game, we definitely recommend checking out the 90's classic.  It's definitely got the old-school feel but with a current NBA roster.  Weighing in at 300MB+, it's certainly one of the biggest games we've encountered so be sure to hop on Wi-Fi.
NBA Jam offers three game modes:
  • Play Now – Select a team and jump right into the ballgame.
  • Classic Campaign – Defeat all other teams to win the championship, and unlock legends, hidden players, and outrageous cheats.
  • Local Multiplayer – Go big head 2 big head against a friend via local WiFi or Bluetooth

FIFA 12 builds on the popular football series and features more than 22 official leagues, 500 teams, and 15,000 players.  EA has updated the mechanics of the game for this year's release, making it easier than ever to control your player and the ball.
Master free kicks and penalty shots with full touch control. Get in the game with realistic 360° player movement and gesture-driven skill moves. Pull off defense-splitting passes, rifling shots, penalty kicks, and pro-style tricks.
Download NBA Jam for Android 2.2+ devices  and FIFA 12 for 2.1+ devices.
