Update - 276

Posted: 22 Mar 2012 05:13 PM PDT
For those of you who didn’t catch the announcement of Panasonic’s Eluga at MWC, what we’ve got here is a 4.3″ device with a TI OMAP 4430, the very same of which resides inside the Motorola RAZR. From the hands on impression at MWC, however, it seems it may not be as fluid as the RAZR, despite the similarity. You’ll also find 1GB of RAM inside as well as 8GB of embedded storage. Unfortunately this one will ship with Gingerbread and a relatively small 1150mAh battery. It’s been a while since MWC, though, so maybe Panasonic has had time to retool the onboard software for enhanced performance. Plus it has dust and water resistance certification going for it. That’s pretty awesome, right? Expect the first wave of them to hit Japan in March, followed by Europe in April. Pricing and US availability are yet to be seen.

HTC Vivid owners on Ma Bell’s network have had a great March haven’t they? HTC started off by highlighting the device would not only be getting Android 4.0, but also Beats Audio. Then owners were able their mitts on the unofficially official update thanks to a crafty Vivid owner. And of course, some AT&T subscribers took matters into their own hands and manually pulled the official update to their devices, even though AT&T stayed mum on whether the update was actually available or not. Well gang, AT&T and HTC have finally let the cat out of the bag and announced the official ICS update is available for the Vivid smartphone.
Users will find a nice listing of features in the update too. In addition to Android 4.0 and
Diet Sense 4.0
Sense 3.6, users will get Beats Audio software built-in (even though AT&T/HTC states it will only work when headphones or external speakers are connected), Facial Unlock, the ability to use Bluetooth mice and keyboards and improved email.
The update should be pushing out to all users now. That means when you get it you will be able to enjoy all of the delicious ICS goodness. If you don’t get it, sit tight folks— it will arrive soon enough.

Motorola continues to add features, making its MOTOACTV sports watch more and more interesting and of continued great value in recent days.  The new device has now just been given an update that will allow golfers to get in on the action.  Motorola teamed up with Bubba Watson, a three-time  PGA Tour champion to bring you the Motorola MOTACTV Golf Edition.  The device has been touted as “a cutting-edge GPS golf tracker” along with an excellent virtual caddy and online clubhouse.  As a golf fanatic, I’m literally watering at the mouth right now. The device offers 20,000 courses to choose from offering you information and distance from front, center and back of any green.  In addition, distance from hazards, the keeping of your score, clubs used and regulation green hits can all be found on the new update.  One of the more interesting and cool features is the “clubhouse” feature we mentioned above.  The service syncs up your data in which you can then view the course you played in a satellite view as well as where all your shots went.  Now, that’s valuable as heck to any golfer.
"The new Golf Edition of MOTOACTV has features that allow players to make better decisions on the course," Watson said in a press release. "From the weekend warriors trying to find the distance to the back of the green to great golfers who want to analyze their game and share their stats with friends, MOTOACTV helps improve scores and makes the game more enjoyable."
The only downside to it all is the cost, the Golf Edition is coming in rather heavy at $299.99 but if you’re willing to fork over the cheddar, you can pre-order the MOTOACTV now and it’l start shipping April 1st. Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments below.  If you’re not interested in the MOTOACTV you might want to check out the WIMM One device, an equally slick sports watch to compliment your Android device as well as Sony’s LiveView companion.  And let’s not forget the awesome i’m watch.

We know that Sony is not pulling any strings when it comes to its intentions to really take a bite out of the overall smartphone share. Their newly revamped Xperia line of smartphones are no doubt impressive ones and we know they are clearly intending to appease even the most technical smartphone users, but aside from some news here and there— we hadn’t seen a real marketing or advertising push for Sony’s top line of devices, until now. Sony has given a sneak peak of their first commercial, which is a stop-motion animated piece done by none other than Wes Anderson.
The commercial has a unique background of how it was developed too. Anderson interviewed several children and asked them how they thought a smartphone worked. Their response gave him the idea to highlight smaller robot workers working under a head honcho big robot in order to ensure the (Xperia) smartphone is operating at the best level possible which includes getting different types of content including video and music in the device. The way it’s presented in the commercial piece shows an interesting way of describing how how phone operates. Creative indeed.

There seems to be something going on with the Android Gmail app for many users out there, and it doesn’t appear explainable. It started sometime yesterday afternoon for both rooted and non-rooted users. Upon opening Gmail from your Android phone or tablet, it gets stuck in a loop of trying to refresh and it flickers. It obviously can’t be the app itself because there hasn’t been an update in the last day, so it has to be an issue with Google. Users of the following devices are reporting the issue: Atrix 4G, Galaxy S, Galaxy S II, Optimus S, EVO 3D, Acer A500 tablet, Photon 4G, Epic 4G, Nexus S 4G, Thunderbolt, and most likely others. Here’s a quick video showing what the issue is.

I haven’t noticed any issues with my Galaxy Nexus, how about you guys?

Dev’s are about to get an early Christmas gift as Google has announced a new revision to its SDK with a number of anticipated bug fixes as well as some new and improved features.  You can expect to see some improvements in areas such as “Lint” and the emulator itself.
Lint is a static checker which analyzes Android projects for a variety of issues around correctness, security, performance, usability and accessibility, checking your XML resources, bitmaps, ProGuard configuration files, source files and even compiled bytecode. It can be run from within Eclipse or from the command line.
The list is extensive and a highly welcomed addition and revision to the current SDK.  We hope to see great things from devs when new and improved tools are handed down to them.  Check out the full list of features, revisions and improvements below, courtesy of Android SDK Tech, Xavier Ducrohet.  Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments section below.

Updated SDK Tools and ADT revision 17

Today we are releasing an update to the SDK Tools and the Eclipse plugin. Revision 17 brings a lot of new features and bug fixes in various areas such as Lint, the build system as well as the emulator.
New for r17:
  • Added check for Android API calls that require a version of Android higher than the minimum supported version. You can use the new @TargetApiannotation to specify local overrides for conditionally loaded code. For more information, read here.
  • Added over 40 new Lint rules for a total of over 80, including checks for performance, XML layouts, manifest and file handling. For a full list read here.
  • Added ability to suppress Lint warnings in Java code with the new @SuppressLint annotation, and in XML files with the new tools: namespace prefix and ignore attribute. For more information, read here.
  • Improved HTML and XML reporting and Eclipse integration. For more information, read here.
We've also made improvements to the build systems for Eclipse and Ant:
  • Added strict dependency support for 3rd party Jar files. You can read more information here.
  • Added support for custom views with custom attributes in libraries. Layouts using custom attributes must use the namespace URIhttp://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto instead of the URI that includes the app package name. This URI is replaced with the app specific one at build time.
  • Added a feature that allows you to run some code only in debug mode. Builds now generate a class called BuildConfig containing a DEBUG constant that is automatically set according to your build type. You can check the (BuildConfig.DEBUG) constant in your code to run debug-only functions such as outputting debug logs.
The emulator is seeing some big improvements as well:
  • Thanks to contributions to AOSP from Intel, the emulator now supports running x86 system images in virtualization mode on Windows and Mac OS X. This allows the emulator running at near native speed. The drivers are available through the SDK Manager. Read more here.
  • After adding webcam support and sensor emulation, we are adding experimental support for Multi-Touch input through a tethered Android device. (Read more here)
Finally, we are also releasing an updated Support Library with the following improvements:
  • ShareCompat provides easy helper classes for both sending and receiving content for social sharing apps.
  • NavUtils and TaskStackBuilder provide cross-version support for implementing the Android Design guidelines for navigating within your app including the action bar’s “Up” button.
  • NotificationCompat.Builder provides a compatibility implementation of Android 3.0′s Notification.Builder helper class for creating standardized system notifications.
  • A new Library Project adds support for GridLayout back to API level 7 and higher.
You can get more information about these changes in the SDK Tools Release Notes and ADT Release Notes.

We heard about Acer’s first quad-core tablet, the A510, last November. Then earlier this month they announced it as the Olympics Edition. Now all we needed was the price. We were expecting it to come in at $500 , but we’re pleased with the aggressive price point of $449. This is a solid price for a Tegra 3 tablet with 32GB, not to mention 12 hours of battery life with the whopping 9800 mAh battery. If there is one negative, it’s the fact that it’s 10.9 mm thick. It’s available in both silver and black and you can pre-order one now on Amazon or Future Shop in Canada. We expect shipments to commence in about 3 weeks.
The full specs include:
  • Tegra 3 – 4-PLUS-1 quad-core processor
  • 10.1-inch (1280 x 800) 16:10 display
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 5MP rear camera
  • 1MP front camera
  • 32GB internal storage
  • microSD for up to an additional 32GB of storage
  • micro HDMI and USB 2.0 port
  • 9800 mAh battery

Acer Iconia Tab A510 Tablet Delivers Quad Core Performance for High-End Entertainment and Productivity

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 22, 2012 – Acer America today debuts its first quad-core tablet in North America, the Acer Iconia Tab A510 with an NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor. It is designed to deliver outstanding performance and a visually rich experience for mobile game playing and entertainment such as enjoying video and lifestyle apps.
In addition, the new 10.1-inch tablet Acer Iconia Tab A510 goes beyond what most people expect of their tablets to enable heightened productivity. The new tablet comes with the full suite of Polaris™ Office 3.5, which is compatible with Microsoft Office and allows reading and editing of various document formats for mobile access to important information. The new Acer tablet also includes Acer Print, so customers have a convenient and seamless way to print wirelessly from their tablet.
The first rate tablet experience is heightened with Android™ 4.0 OS (Ice Cream Sandwich) which features a more intuitive interface and improved overall performance for faster browsing, better multitasking, as well as enhanced app and folder management.
"The new Acer Iconia Tab A510 will exceed the expectations of customers who are ready to embrace using their tablets for more fun, entertainment and a first-rate mobile gaming experience," said Paul Tayar, director of product marketing for connected devices, Acer America. "Our second-generation Acer A510 builds on the success of its award-winning predecessor with notable improvements in performance, responsiveness and ease-of use, elevating it to the status of ultimate mobile companion. Plus, the tablet will really surprise people with its comprehensive suite of productivity apps that will enable them to remain productive and connected on-the-go."
Ultimate Performance with NVIDIA Tegra™ 3 Quad Core Processor, Extended Battery Life
The Acer Iconia Tab A510 provides blazing speed and responsiveness powered by the NVIDIA Tegra™ 3 Mobile Processor and high-performance 12-Core GeForce NVIDIA GPU. This processor provides a unique Super 4-PLUS-1™ Quad Core CPU design with a fifth Battery Saver Core that allows up to four cores to be dedicated to demanding tasks such as watching video and playing the next generation of graphics-intense mobile games.
These four cores provide up to 2.6 times the performance and up to three times the graphics performance compared to previous generation processors, making the tablet incredibly responsive with life-like and crisp visuals for mobile entertainment and console-quality gaming on-the-go. The processor also provides up to four times faster web-browsing, smooth navigation, and hardware-accelerated support for Adobe Flash 11, which comes pre-installed on the tablet.
When the tablet takes on everyday tasks, the fifth Battery Saver Core becomes engaged in place of the other four cores, ultimately using less power and improving battery life. The 9800mAh battery, one of the highest capacity models in the industry, further improves battery life, so customers can enjoy their tablet for up to 12 hours(1) of video playback.
Productivity Suite, Printing, Make A510 Tablet a Mobile Workstation
The Acer A510 tablet is packed with a full suite of productivity apps optimized for use on a tablet that will give any road warrior a much needed boost. The anchor of the suite is Polaris™ Office 3.5, which provides customers a premium way to read and edit various popular documents while providing enhanced integration with other tablet apps. It also features Evernote, the easy-to-use personal assistant that keeps customers organized by allowing them to capture and save web pages, photos, ideas and documents and then store them to the cloud for access from other devices.
With Acer Print, customers can print wirelessly from the convenience of their Acer tablet, unlike some tablets that require confusing or costly apps that don't support a wide range of printers. Acer Print is compatible with 87 percent of brand name printers on the current market. In addition to supporting a variety of printing formats (doc, pic and browsers), Acer Print also shows the exact print layout on the screen, no matter if it's a spreadsheet for work or coupons for grocery shopping.
Additionally, the Acer A510 can be taken to a meeting to deliver a presentation; it supports HDMI to VGA for quick connection to projector.
Thrilling Extras for Entertainment, Connectivity
The Acer Iconia Tab A510 highlights lifelike and compelling 720p visuals thanks to the gorgeous 10.1-inch WXGA (1280×800 resolution) HD display. The Acer A510's 16:10 aspect ratio and wide 85-degree viewing angle ensure an optimal viewing experience that is further improved by Dolby™ Mobile 3 audio. Plus, the display is a 10-point touch capacitive screen, so it delivers a remarkable degree of accuracy and responsiveness.
In addition, customers can share video stored on Acer Iconia Tab A510 with other devices via the tablet's built-in micro HDMI port. Blu-ray™ quality 1080p video in 30fps can be streamed from the tablet to an external display. Plus, the micro USB 2.0 port enables quick content transfers to and from the tablet. Plus, the new tablet has been enhanced with the ability to conveniently charge it from its USB 2.0 port via another USB 2.0 device.
The Acer A510 is packed with features customers want in a tablet. Its 1GB of RAM(2) contributes to its fast mobile performance. The new tablet comes with an integrated 32GB of flash storage(2) for ample storage of photos, music and videos. The Acer A510 also has a Micro-SD card reader that supports up to 32GB Micro-SD cards(2) that can access additional digital content.
The Acer Iconia Tab A510 keeps consumers connected to Wi-Fi networks with reliable Acer 802.11a/b/g/n wireless technology. Plus, the integrated Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR (enhanced data rate) allows consumers to connect the tablet to a variety of other devices, such as headsets and printers.
The 1MP fixed-focused front-facing camera has an improved zoom, making it ideal for video conferencing. The 5MP rear-facing camera is auto-focusing, and provides the ability to take snapshots while recording HD video. Video clips and photos can be enhanced on the fly, stored and searched for based on various tags, and conveniently stored on Google+™.
The Acer Iconia Tab A510 is ready for hours of entertainment with popular pre-loaded apps such as Kindle™ for reading and Netflix™ for instant movie enjoyment. Google™ Music allows customers to create and enjoy their own personal playlists on their tablet. The preloaded Tegra Zone Android™ app brings customers direction to the best Android™ games that are optimized for NVIDIA Tegra powered tablets.
