Verizon Wireless opens second chance enrollments on protection plans
Oct 1st 2013, 20:52, by Robert Nelson

If you happen to be carrying a Verizon handset without any sort of protection plan you now have an opportunity to get the coverage you need — even if you missed out on that initial availability window. Verizon Wireless along with Asurion are currently offering a second chance open enrollment and those looking to sign-up have until December 2nd to do so. This includes the Total Mobile Protection and Wireless Phone Protection options, both of which include device replacements.

The Total Mobile Protection (TMP) option is the higher priced of the two, but that also means it offers more in terms of plan features and support. This one is priced at $10 per month (per line). The Wireless Phone Protection (WPP) plan is $5.18 per month. And those looking to take advantage of the device replacements should know that a $99 deductible will also apply.

The TMP plan was just introduced a few weeks earlier, so it may sound familiar to some. In addition to the device replacements, this one also includes some security and support features.

The security features include the Verizon Support & Protection Premium app with McAfee protection against viruses and malware. The support is from the Verizon Tech Coaches and includes “unlimited help with your mobile device and everything it connects to.” This plan also offers the ability to remotely lock your handset, locate your handset and wipe the content.

Anyway, aside from the coverage there is some fine print that you may want to make note of. For example, the overnight shipping may not always be available for device replacements and you may not always get a new device back in return. According to Verizon, the replacement may be new or remanufactured and occasionally a different model may be used. And lastly, there is a limit of two device claims per year.

LG G2 hits the UK, competitively priced with a free QuickWindow cover
Oct 1st 2013, 20:14, by Nate Swanner

Fans of the LG G2 in the UK are in luck. Clove has begun selling the popular new device for £480 (including VAT), which also comes with LG's QuickWindow cover. That's a bit of a deal when compared to the £490 ulockedmobiles.com is selling it for, and much better than some other retialers.

SlashGear-1020_20130807_09_45_48_Pro-LG-G2

Three UK has the phone starting at £29/month and £49 down, but that's for a 24 month agreement. By the end of your contract, you'll have spent upwards of £745! It can be had on a pay-as-you-go plan for £399, which could help soften the blow a bit.

If LG intends to reach that international sales goal of 10 million G2 devices, they'll need all the help they can get. While the monthly cost for the device with a plan is a bit more approachable, the overall out-of-pocket savings in purchasing it outright is hard to pass up.

With a 5.2-inch HD screen and impressive features like knock-on, the LG G2 is a dynamite handset. Backed up by a Snapdragon 800 and Adreno 330 GPU, the G2 is good enough to stand out in a crowded mobile space. Increased marketing efforts across the globe should help people recognize how great it is. We'll be interested to see how the UK responds to buttons on the rear of a device, though.

Samsung Galaxy Star Pro released in India
Oct 1st 2013, 20:01, by Nate Swanner

In the Indian market, Microtel is the incumbent leader. With nearly a quarter of the market share, they easily rival all other OEMs for supremacy in the emerging Indian market. Samsung is distance themselves from their competition further, and has released the Galaxy Star Pro as a competitively priced offering.

In India, specs aren't the main concern; pricing is, though. As such, Samsung's latest is mediocre by comparison to new devices we see stateside, but very average for a cost conscious market like India. The 4-inch screen has a 480 x 800 resolution, and it's backed by an A5 processor, single core and clocked at 1GHz. A lonely 512MB RAM and 4GB of internal storage round out the major specs, and it's all powered by a 1,500 mAH battery.

Samsung claims the Galaxy Star Pro can get 15 hours of talk time, and 370 hours on standby. The device doesn't support 3G connections, but has WiFi and Bluetooth. A 2MP camera is on the back, with no front facing shooter available. Running on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, it's covered with Samsung's ubiquitous TouchWiz skin and has their wildly popular (in India) ChatOn service.

The device will cost Rs 6,989, or about $111. For what it is, and the market it's sold in, it could be a wildly popular device. Though Samsung is the market leader in India, they're looking to further distance themselves from the competition as they always do: by saturating the market with competitively priced devices.

Android 4.3 test firmware leaks for the Samsung Galaxy S 4
Oct 1st 2013, 19:37, by Robert Nelson

Talk of Android 4.3 for the Samsung Galaxy S 4 had been increasing in frequency lately. Just in the past week we have seen rumors suggesting the update would begin arriving in late-November and we saw an update schedule leak by way of a French carrier. Well, it looks like the latest has arrived in the form of an Android 4.3 test build for the Galaxy S 4.

Said test build has recently leaked and has arrived as version I9505XXUEMI8. As evidence of the version, this test build is intended for the GT-I9505, which is the unlocked European model. There is an option to download and install this build, but as always, you should use test builds with caution as there could be issues.

With that in mind, the folks at SamMobile have said they have found it “really stable” and to be a build that has “received a significant boost” in terms of performance. In fact, they go on to say that it is “much faster and lag free than Android 4.2.2.” Further details point towards most of the changes being under-the-hood with a few minor tweaks to the user interface.

Otherwise, those same rumors suggesting a late-November release for the Galaxy S 4 also pointed towards the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II getting Android 4.3. So far we have yet to see any test builds leak for those latter two devices, but if there is anything to take from the Galaxy S 4 leak — it is that Samsung appears to be making progress towards the official release.

Of course, there is the other side of these updates. Once Samsung has them ready they go to the carriers for approval. Or in simpler terms, just because Samsung appears to be making progress and just because we have seen rumors pointing towards November — specific carriers could end up having a different timeline for release.

HTC One Max tipped to arrive with Beats Audio
Oct 1st 2013, 19:10, by Robert Nelson

Despite the recent break between HTC and Beats Electronics, it seems as if the yet to be announced HTC One Max will include Beats Audio. The details are coming by way of Luke Wood, president and chief operating officer at Beats Electronics who was recently interviewed by Stuff. During that interview Mr. Wood spoke about an upcoming “large-format device” from HTC.

htcone_androidcommunity_review12-540x353

He went on to mention that HTC has this device coming out this fall and the are “still on that device.” Past the HTC One Max though, we may not be seeing anything with Beats Audio branding coming from HTC. Wood declined to comment on whether any sort of relationship would continue. Still, he did have some kind words for HTC.

Wood touched on how he felt things had been “very productive” and about how he was “very proud of the way those devices sound.” But all the talk of the relationship aside, it looks like we can now add Beats Audio to the list of features that are expected to arrive with the HTC One Max.

Some of those other goodies look to include a 5.9-inch Full HD display and Snapdragon S4 processor. We have yet to hear anything direct from HTC in terms of an announcement, but the mention of a fall release does seem to coincide with the earlier rumors suggesting a mid-October announcement.
