Just about every time we turn around, a new prepaid carrier is launching in the United States. Earlier today, Freedom Pop officially began offering a new free prepaid phone service and now it looks like Target is getting into the cellular game as well, with an upcoming service called Brightspot.
Target has yet to officially take the wraps off Brightspot, but details have leaked out that suggest the service will launch on October 6th. The new MVNO is said to be powered by T-Mobile's network and will offer three different plans. While all three plans offer unlimited talk and text, the big difference is the amount of data provided.
For the $35 plan, you get zero, zilch, nada. In other words, if you have a smartphone you'll want to turn your attention to the $50 or $65 plans – both of which advertise unlimited data. The difference is that the $50 plan only gives you 1GB of 4G (HSPA+ and 4G LTE) data before throttling down to 2G, while the later option provides 4GB.
How do these plans compare to what T-Mobile directly offers? If you don't care about unlimited calling, T-Mobile's $30 unlimited web/text with 100 minutes might certainly be the better way to go. If you want the unlimited talk part, we have to admit these plans aren’t half bad – though they aren’t exactly ‘great’ either.
The folks that are going to find Brighspot most appealing will be regular Target shoppers, though. To reward faithful subscribers to Brightspot, Target will give out a $25 Target gift card every six months. Target RedCard members will also get 5% off the suggested plan prices – though that's not exactly huge savings.
Of course a cellular service is only as good as the phones that work with it. For Brightspot, you’ll not only have a few handsets for sale directly from the carrier, but they will also sell nano and micro-SIM cards, which will allow you to bring over your own GSM compatible devices.
