Update - 116

The Samsung Galaxy S Advance has shown up in FCC documents. We previously didn’t have any release information for this handset in the US, so all you Samsung fans out there in the United States can rest assured that you will see the Galaxy S Advance at some point. The FCC documents reveal that the phone, also known as the GT-i9070, has AT&T bands. Samsung announced the phone in January, and we got to see some real life pics shortly after. The documents show that the handset’s GSM 850/1900 bands, dual-band WiFi, WCDMA bands 850/1900, Bluetooth and NFC are all approved. Here’s a little refresher on the specs:
  • 1GHz dual-core CPU
  • 4-inch Super AMOLED display
  • 768 MB of RAM
  • 5 MP rear facing camera and 1.3 MP front facing camera
  • Android 2.3 Gingerbread
  • 1500 mAh battery
Since it’s a new release, we’re hoping this phone will be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich before too long. There is no confirmation on the release date or price yet. Stay posted to Talk Android for more information on the Samsung Galaxy S Advance as it becomes available.

Since our Android smart phones contain so much of our personal information, it makes perfect sense to keep our phones secure. Enter Avira, the company that has brought our computers antivirus and firewall protection for years. They have released a beta version of their Free Android Security app for all your anti-theft needs.
There are many features in this app to keep your phone safe. You can lock the phone remotely by logging on to the Web Console from any browser, pinpoint a phone’s location on Google maps, or if someone finds your lost phone, they can call an alternate phone number to contact you. Avira will let you manage up to five devices on one account. Logging on to the Web Console will also let you see your battery life and records the security history of your device. Best of all, also using the Web Console, you can “Make It Scream” for those times that you know your phone is hidden under one of those sofa cushions.
Let us know in the comments if Avira makes you feel more secure about your Android device.
The app is free, and you can download it from the market link below.

It was back in December that we first heard Archos claim that its G9 series of tablets would receive the ICS update sometime in Q1 of this year. Here we are in the home stretch of the first Quarter and we have yet to see the devices get the update. Now, apparently Archos wants to apologize for the delay and is ready to put a more exact timeline on the update. They recently took to their Facebook page claiming “they fully anticipate deploying the upgrade within the next two weeks,” as I am sure you G9 are are pleased to hear. They also emphasize the importance of delivering a smooth transition to the latest version of the Android OS. At least they are trying to make it a bug-free launch unlike the one ASUS issued for the Transformer Prime.
As soon as we can pin down an exact rollout date, or when we receive word of its arrival, we will let you know.

As more and more Tegra 3-based devices become the norm, we will see more and more devices being launched. Chinese manufacturer Tianyu is no exception to this and has launched its K-Touch Treasure V8. Among the confirmed features in the device are the Tegra 3 processor, 4.3-inch screen and Ice Cream Sandwich. Rumor also has it that this mysterious device will feature an 8MP camera and will run on China’s Unicom WCDMA network as well. Further details are scarce at the moment, but hopefully more information will come out on this device which will likely be found within China only.

While the Chinese company Huawei has quietly released high-end devices like the Huawei Ascend P1 and the Huawei Ascend D Quad, they are still not a brand on the tip of the average American’s tongue. In an effort to change this, their next move is to produce two devices released by T-Mobile under the “myTouch” name. Starting in 2009, HTC and later LG had released phones under the myTouch branding. The new Huawei devices should be released sometime in the late spring of this year. The phones, named U8680 and U8730, are said to be identical other than the keyboard.
The only specs that have been released are the 480 x 800 WVGA  resolution, and the fact that they will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
We don’t have much information to go on, but from the picture the devices look to have a screen size of 4 inches and are probably not high-end or expensive devices. T-Mobile has also released a Huawei tablet, called the T-Mobile Springboard. Maybe this is the start of Huawei releasing some high-end phones for T-Mobile. Huawei is well on its way to being a household name in the US.

There are essential apps that every smartphone owner needs to have, and a backup app is one of those. We’ve all been in situations where we need to do a factory reset on our phone/tablet or maybe you’re buying a new phone and would like your settings, text messages, and other important files to easily move over.
Look no further because MyBackup Pro by RerWare is simply the best one out there for the money. With MyBackup Pro you can backup your applications, photos, contacts, call log, browser bookmarks, SMS (text messages), MMS (message attachments), calendar, system Settings, home screens (including shortcut positions), alarms, dictionary, music playlists, and more. The good news is that you don’t have to be rooted, but if you are, you will have more advantages like backing up apks and app data. Non rooted users can still backup certain apps if the developer integrates with MyBackup Pro. Apps like AK Notepad, Note Everything, Meridian Player, and OI apps are already integrated and can easily be backed up
RerWare takes things a step further by giving you the ability to save your backups to your SD card/internal storage or their online servers. The online server option is the best protection because if you lose your device, you will still have access to your files for restoring to your new device. RerWare gives you 100MB for free with the option of purchasing 250MB for $10 per year or 1GB for $20 per year. Last but not least, you can schedule automatic daily or weekly backups so you can feel satisfied knowing your files are always backed up.
MyBackup Pro is hands down the best backup app available in the Android Market. It’s priced at $4.99, but you can also try their free version which allows you to backup and restore to only one device for 30 days. Check out my hands on video and for more information, please visit the RerWare site and/or hit the download links below.

Oh boy, another Galaxy S III rumor and this time it’s surrounding the device’s launch. You ready for this? So apparently, according to ZDNet Korea, the Galaxy S III will launch in April with an announcement from Samsung sometime this month. Timing of the SGSIII’s launch will be key for Samsung to compete with the iPhone 5′s release and April will fall in line just perfectly to do some serious damage. If the earlier reported specs are true, the Galaxy S III will be one hell of a machine and will definitely be the top contender in the mobile arena. But again, these are all just rumors and nothing is official as of yet.

Cheil Worldwide, Samsung’s marketing agency, is also saying that Samsung is planning the launch around the Summer Olympics in in London, England. This will allow them to make a huge ad push during the games, on TV and locally in the UK. One question that has been brought up is whether or not the device will actually see a simultaneous global launch. It wouldn’t make much sense for the device to launch in the U.S. given the strict and often times lengthy testing period carriers like to put phones through. As much as I want to see the Galaxy S III sooner rather than later, I bet it will still be a while before us U.S. folks get to spend our money. What do you think, too soon for the GSIII to launch? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

There seem to be more and more hints of a Google-developed tablet on the horizon. According to Slash Gear, the following domains have been snatched up and registered by MarkMonitor:
appsonplay.com
booksonplay.com
gamesonplay.com
googleplayapps.com
googleplaybooks.com
googleplaydownloads.com
googleplaygames.com
googleplaymagazines.com
googleplaymovies.com
googleplaymusic.com
googleplaynewspapers.com
googleplaynewsstand.com
googleplaytv.com
googleplayvideos.com
magazinesonplay.com
moviesonplay.com
newspapersonplay.com
tvonplay.com
While this is pure speculation— it looks like each domain gives us insight of some of the features to look forward to on the tablet. Apps, books, games, magazines, newspapers, music, movies are some of the things a tablet would indeed feature— especially if it’s intention is go directly against something like the Kindle Fire tablet. Anyone else licking their chops and salivating at the idea of a possible Nexus-branded tablet?
