Posted: 08 Mar 2012 12:45 PM PST Looking through the US Trademarks and Patents website is often a good way to confirm rumored device names and company initiatives. If you've followed us for a while then you know that Samsung has long been one of the companies who loves to file trademarks for names on a regular basis. It makes sense when you think about it as they seem to announce a new smartphone, tablet, or media player on a rapid clip. I noticed a couple of sites referencing some recent Samsung Galaxy trademark applications so I thought I'd poke around a bit. What I found were a handful of items that all sound like they could the next big smartphone or tablet. Some are only days old while others have been around a few months. It's not clear whether or not these will see the light of day anytime soon, but it's fun to guess anyways. It's also possible that I simply missed coverage of one of these elsewhere.

Posted: 08 Mar 2012 10:04 AM PST Following the new branding and company direction, Google Play is about to offer new forms of content to consumers. According to details and rumors from an unofficial Google news blog, we should keep our eyes (and ears) open for audiobooks, magazines, and newspapers. By doing so, Google will be positioning themselves more in line with Amazon and Apple in that they are a content ecosystem. TechCrunch is also reporting that Google could also be working to bring television shows to Google Play in the future. The move would make sense as it compliments movies and would also level the playing field. Looking at the Amazon business model for the Kindle Fire, we hardly ever see a mention of "Android". Whether referring to the platform that powers the device or the actual applications and games, most consumers don't know about the Android aspect. Google appears to be adopting a similar strategy with the Play initiative as they got rid of the Android Market name altogether. Think about a Google Play tablet for a moment. Imagine being able to get all your digital content on one inexpensive device, be it apps, games, music, magazines, newspapers, movies. You know, just like Amazon and the Kindle Fire... but from Google instead. If they truly are working on a $200 tablet with stock Android experience then consumers will be in for a real treat. Google could wrestle back a bit of the control from Amazon and give consumers something comparable from another trusted name. Posted: 08 Mar 2012 09:07 AM PST NVIDIA, like most of the plugged-in world, noticed that Apple announced a brand new, incredibly awesome iPad yesterday. As part of the unveiling, Apple advised that the graphics prowess of the new tablet was far superior to anything else on the market. Yep, even the NVIDIA Tegra 3 chipset that's just getting started. Claiming that their chipset was at a fourfold speed advantage of the Kal-El stuff, it sounds like the best thing going for mobile gamers. NVIDIA, however, doesn't know where Apple got their benchmarks, and would love to learn more. Speaking with ZDNet yesterday, NVIDIA's Ken Brown, admitted that while it was "certainly flattering" to be called out by Apple, the company wants to know how the data was compiled. "We don't have the benchmark information," said Brown. "We have to understand what the application was that was used. Was it one or a variety of applications? What drivers were used? There are so many issues to get into with benchmark."It's worth pointing out that the presentation slide during the keynote was void of any actual source or benchmark numbers. In past instances we would at least see a footnote or source as to where it was culled, especially if it was done via third party. Was Apple telling the truth when they boasted the 4X performance? Should they come clean with the figures? Follow AndroidGuys on Facebook and Twitter and download the free AndroidGuys app for your device! Save a bunch on your next Android. Posted: 08 Mar 2012 08:45 AM PST We've heard on more than one occasion that Amazon has more devices in the Kindle Fire family expected for 2012 so this next bit of news may not be groundbreaking stuff. According to DigiTimes, Amazon is expecting to release a direct successor to the 7-inch Kindle Fire in the second half of the year. Likely due in time for the all-important holiday buying season, it would make sense to refresh the model. Joining the tablet, however, should be a 10-inch model which is to be manufactured by Quanta and Foxconn. It's being reported that Amazon is going to skip the 8.9-inch version for now and focus on the larger display size. If you could design the next Kindle Fire, what feature would you add?
